This Stereo Technique uses two firstorder cardioid microphones spaced 30 cm (11.8 in) apart and angled at 90° to
create a stereo image. Thus, the setup is a combination of differenceinlevel stereo and differenceintime stereo.
Basically, the recording angle of NOS is ±40°.
If used at larger distances to the sound source, the NOS stereo technique may lose the lower frequencies. This loss
is due to the use of pressure gradient microphones and hence the possible influence of the proximity of these
microphones. The microphones selected should have a flat response for distant sources.
This stereo technique is more useful at shorter distances, for example on a piano, small ensembles or when used to
create stereo sound on an instrument section in a classical orchestra.
As the name suggests, this setup has been standardized by NOS, an abbreviation of Nederlandse Omroep Stichting
(in English: The Dutch Broadcast Foundation).

You’ve never heard a subminiature like this before
What they lack in size, they more than make up for in clarity, consistency and durability – three
qualities that really matter.
