The Lusitano horses (PSL) in Brazil gathers a core of important equine world for the breed,
taking the breeders of the greatest relevance in the continued safe quality of animals. Based on
date belonging to Brazilian Lusitano Horse Breeders Association the present study aimed to
provide demographic information and inbreeding of the breed in Brazil. Formed with the oldest
saddle horse in the world, that preserve their characteristics such as strength, courage,
flexibility and docility, decisive in the breed qualities and preserved for centuries. They
analyzed records of 9082 males and 9838 females born between the years 1912 and 2012, with
87.3% of these occurred in Brazil, between 1966 and 2012. Horses are distributed in 22 (81.5%) of
the 27 federal units of Brazil, highlighted São Paulo which concentrates 80% of the animals,
demonstrating the importance of this state to the Association. There is less use of reproductive
males in the PSL formation in Brazil, while 10% of males national obtain registration as a breeds
and are used in forming progeny, national mares account for 37%. Contrasting values with
imported, where the use of reproductive mares have values 96% and males 72%, which justifies
the purchase for reproductive use. The average number of foals was 12.3 and 4.0 offspring per
stallion and mare, respectively. Animals born in Brazil by 2009 represents 27.3% (14,509) of the
world entire of official records, indicating that world growth and prominence of breed in recent
years, in part, is due to Brazil, which allowed the PSL. The coefficient of inbreeding is 4.0% the
resulting average in 91% of animals, suggesting that the mating related animals is common
practice in PSL horses. However, the value is not high, indicating that breeders consider the
importance of inbreeding when mating. In conclusion, animals born in Brazil demonstrate the
importance for the breed on the world context, that there are territorial coverage in the country,
and that the breeders control the inbreeding coefficient.
