4.0 Learn Mode Programming

The C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Units, in common with all
C-Bus2 units, may be programmed with the Installation Software or by Learn Mode.

The Learn Mode programming provides basic configuration functions without the
requirement for a computer to be connected to the C-Bus Network. This enables quick
configuration of a C-Bus Network when it is installed. This mode is enabled by pressing
one of the override buttons on a C-Bus2 output unit for 10 seconds until the Unit and
C-Bus lights flash alternately.

Once the Learn Mode is enabled, the override switch associated with the desired output
channel (or channels) is (are) pressed. A key on a C-Bus input unit to control this
(these) loads is then pressed. Once all selections have been made, the Learn Mode is
exited by pressing any override switch on a C-Bus2 output unit which is taking part in
learn mode. The operation can now be tested by pressing the key on the C-Bus input
unit. See the C-Bus Learn Mode Operations and Programming Guide for more details.

5.0 Installation Software Programming

5.1 Installation Software

The traditional way to program a C-Bus unit is via the installation software and
for detailed control there is no better way to program a unit. The installation
software network browser displays the C-Bus 12 Channel Professional
Architectural Dimmer Units as type DIMPR12. Double clicking on the line for the
C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Unit loads the GUI for the
unit.

You will need C-Bus Installation Software 2.7 or newer to successfully program
your C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Unit

5.2 Configuration
One of the first things that must be done is the retrieval of the unit configuration.
Unlike other C-Bus products not all the information about the unit can be stored
in the C-Bus database. As such an ini file is used for advanced parameter
storage which the C-Bus database accesses to retrieve the unit configuration.

To upload the unit configuration double click on the line for the C-Bus 12
Channel Professional Architectural Unit in the C-Bus Installation Software
Browser. A dialogue box will appear asking if you want to retrieve the stored
scenes from the unit. Click Yes or No as to whether or not you wish to upload
the Scene data from the Unit. A progress bar, like the one below, indicates the
progress of the upload.

5.3 Unit Parameters

In common with all unit GUI templates the GUI contains six boxes containing
the Project name, the Network name, the Application, the Part, the Unit number
and the Area address of the unit.

The Part, Application and Area fields can be edited here. The Project, Network
and Unit fields cannot and are subsequently greyed out.

The top row of tabs provides access to various aspects of C-Bus 12 Channel
Professional Architectural programming. These cover basic C-Bus settings,
Channel setup for C-Bus and DMX, the Restore Scene, Scene setup, Global
Parameters and Status.

Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.4 Channel Setup

The Channel Setup Tab allows the configuration of the main channel settings as
well as the C-Bus settings for each channel. The settings that are available
cover the C-Bus Group, the lighting dimming curve, the minimum level, the
maximum level, the C-Bus Lock and the maximum voltage. All of these settings
are on a per-channel basis. Additionally the C-Bus Lock Enable Group can be
defined (see Section 5.4.5 C-Bus Lock & C-Bus Lock Group).

5.4.1 C-Bus Group Address Assignment

Each channel can be assigned to a C-Bus Group Address. Channels can
share the same Group Address if desired, yet still maintain other
properties that are unique to each channel with respects to dimming curve
etc.

To assign a C-Bus Group Address to an output channel simply click on the

arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available Group
addresses. Click on the Group Address that you wish to use.

A shortcut to jump to the next item has been provided. Pressing the TAB
key moves the cursor to the next group. This works for all drop-down
boxes.

5.4.2 Dimming Curve

Each output channel of the C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural
Dimmer can have a user-selectable lighting dimming curve. The dimming
curve determines how the unit responds to changes in dimmer input.

Typically a fade curve is used to compensate for the non-linear response

of the power modules. By default the Lite 3 curve (curve 3) is applied to
each dimmer channel. This curve has been developed over a period of
time to produce a fade that is pleasing to the eye for 1kW to 2kW loads.
To assign a Dimming Curve to an output channel simply click on the arrow
on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available Dimming
Curves. Click on the Curve that you wish to use.

Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.4.3 Minimum Level

The Minimum Level allows a minimum output level to be specified for each
channel. The use of the minimum brighness feature will scale the output of
the channel so that a 0% input signal will correspond to the minimum
brightness level.

To specify a Minimum Level for an output channel simply click on the

arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available
Minimum Levels from 0% to the current Maximum Level value in 1%
increments. Click on the Minimum Level that you wish to use.

Pressing a numeric key will cause the list to jump to that number. So
pressing 5, say will cause the list to jump to 5. Pressing it again will cause
a jump to 50.

It is not possible to choose a minimum greater than the maximum.

5.4.4 Maximum Level

The Maximum Level allows a minimum output level to be specified for
each channel. The use of the maximum brighness feature will scale the
output of the channel so that a 100% input signal will correspond to the
maximum brightness level.

To specify a Maximum Level for an output channel simply click on the

arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available
Maximum Levels from the current Minimum Level value to 100% in 1%
increments. Click on the Maximum Level that you wish to use.\

Pressing a numeric key will cause the list to jump to that number. So
pressing 5, say will cause the list to jump to 5. Pressing it again will cause
a jump to 50.

It is not possible to choose a maximum lower than the minimum.

5.4.5 C-Bus Lock & C-Bus Lock Group

The C-Bus Lock feature allows an operator to cause selected output
channels to stop responding to C-Bus commands without switching them
over to DMX control. This feature allows various loads to be locked at their
current lighting levels. The unit will continue to monitor changes in C-Bus
lighting level and, when the C-Bus Lock is turned off, resume the current
C-Bus state.

The C-Bus Lock Group represents the Enable Group Address on the
Enable Control Application ($CB) that is to be used to turn this feature on
and off. Turning this Enable Group on enables the C-Bus Lock and turning
the Enable Group off again disables the C-Bus Lock feature.

To specify which channels are to be locked at their current output level

simply click the check-box for the respective channels. To specify the
Enable Control Group to use for this feature simply click on the arrow on
the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available Enable Group
Addresses. Click on the Group that you wish to use.

5.4.6 Maximum Output Voltage

The output of each channel may be limited in a range 50..220 Volts or LIN
(default) for supply line voltage with no limiting. This is done by monitoring
the line voltage for each phase and compensating for any changes and is
accurate to 10%. This control is achieved by limiting the firing angle of the
phase-controlled dimming.

Note that the channel output voltage can not exceed the supply voltage.

To select a Maximum Output Voltage for an output channel simply click on

the arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available
Maximum Voltage Levels. Click on the voltage that you wish to use.

When a maximum voltage is selected all intervening levels are smoothly

scaled accordingly, rather than being clipped.

5.5 DMX Setup

The DMX control system is supported by this dimmer. Note that this unit will
NOT transfer DMX messages back onto C-Bus.

The DMX tab contains the settings for how the unit responds to DMX as well as
its behaviour when switching to and from C-Bus control. This tab allows the
DMX address assignment, the option to resume the C-Bus Level or update the
C-Bus Level when switching back from DMX control on a per-channel basis, the
C-Bus to DMX fade rate per channel, the DMX to C-Bus fade rate per channel
and the Enable Group Address on the Enable Control Application ($CB) that is
to be used to turn this feature on and off.

5.5.1 DMX Channel

For each channel a DMX address can be assigned. This allows the unit to
respond to DMX input devices such as lighting control desks etc. DMX
address is selectable In the range 001..512 for each channel or Unused.

To select a DMX Address for an output channel simply click on the arrow
on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available DMX
Addresses. Click on the address that you wish to use. If Unused is
selected the channel will remain in C-Bus control when the unit is switched
into DMX mode.

Note that it is possible to have channels that use the same C-Bus Group
Address under C-Bus control and use different DMX addresses.

Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.5.2 Take or Update C-Bus Level

When the output channels are switched back to C-Bus control from DMX
control one of two things can be set to occur. The unit can either return to
the current C-Bus state or it can update C-Bus to reflect the current state
of the output channels.

To select the channel to resume the C-Bus state after returning from DMX
mode click the radio button under the heading ‘Take C-Bus Level’. If
‘Update C-Bus Level’ was previously selected the radio button under that
heading will dissapear and the one under ‘Take C-Bus Level’ will be
selected.

If you want to update C-Bus after using DMX click on the radio button
under the heading ‘Update C-Bus Level’. If ‘Take C-Bus Level’ was
previously selected the radio button under that heading will dissapear and
the one under ‘Update C-Bus Level’ will be selected.

5.5.3 C-Bus to DMX Fade

When the unit is put into DMX mode the output channels that have a DMX
address will change to reflect the current DMX level. The speed at which
this transition occurs is selectable on a per-channel basis. The fade rates
are consistent with C-Bus fade rates.

To set the fade rate for the C-Bus to DMX fade for an output channel
simply click on the arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list
of available fade rates. Click on the fade rate that you wish to use.

5.5.4 DMX to C-Bus Fade

When the unit returns from DMX mode back to C-Bus mode the output
channels will change to reflect the current C-Bus level, provided that the
option to ‘Take C-Bus Level’ is set. The speed at which this transition
occurs is selectable on a per-channel basis. The fade rates are consistent
with C-Bus fade rates.

To set the fade rate for the DMX to C-Bus fade for an output channel
simply click on the arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list
of available fade rates. Click on the fade rate that you wish to use.

Note that this option only applies when the channel is set to ‘Take C-Bus
Level’ when returning from DMX mode.
© Copyright 2003 Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd. Page 12
Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.5.5 DMX Mode Switch

The DMX mode switch stops channels that have a DMX Address from
responding to C-Bus and starts them responding to DMX control. This
feature allows various loads to be switched over to DMX control. The unit
will continue to monitor changes in C-Bus lighting level and, when DMX
mode is turned, resume or update the current C-Bus state.

The DMX Enable Group represents the Enable Network Variable on the
Enable Control Application ($CB) that is to be used to turn this feature on
and off. Setting the Value of this Enable Network Variable to $FF enables
DMX mode and setting the Value of this Enable Network Variable to $00
again disables DMX mode.

To specify the Enable Control Group to use for this feature simply click on
the arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available
Enable Group Addresses. Click on the Group that you wish to use.

5.5.6 Lock Fade Rates Together

If you wish to assign the same fade rate to all channels for either the
C-Bus to DMX switching or the DMX to C-Bus switching you can do so
easily with the use of this option.

When this option is enabled any change to a fade rate will automatically
be reflected in all the other fade rates for that control transition, either
C-Bus to DMX or DMX to C-Bus.

To select this option simply click in the check box.

Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.6 Control Fail Setup

The Control Fail tab is provided so that the behaviour of the unit can be defined
if C-Bus is not present at power-up, C-Bus is lost or recovery from a power
failure. This tab gives the user the ability to select the output level for each
channel under these circumstances, whether the Control Fail feature is enabled
and the fade rate at which the Control Fail feature is applied.

5.6.1 Channel Levels

For each channel the output level can be set when the Control Fail feature
is activated. If a channel was under C-Bus control before the last power
cycle and the Control Fail feature is enabled but C-Bus is not present then
the level in the Control Fail shall be applied to that channel. Likewise if a
channel was under DMX control before the last power cycle and the
Control Fail feature is enabled but DMX is not present then the level in the
Control Fail shall be applied to that channel.

To set the Control Fail level for an output channel simply click on the
arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available output
levels. Click on the level that you wish to use.

© Copyright 2003 Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd. Page 14

Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.6.2 Enable Option

This check-box enables or disables the use of the Control Fail feature. If
the Control Fail feature is not enabled and the input signal for a channel is
not present at power-up the channel will remain off and the Control Fail
feature will not be activated. If the Control Fail feature is not enabled and
one of the control inputs, either C-Bus or DMX, is lost the outputs will hold
at their last known valid level

5.6.3 Ramp Rate

The Ramp Rate sets the rate at which the Control Fail feature is applied to
the output channels. This is global for all channels when the Control Fail
feature is activated.

To set the fade rate for the Control Fail feature for all output channels
simply click on the arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list
of available fade rates. Click on the fade rate that you wish to use.

5.7 Scenes
One of the benefits of an automation system is that you can combine several
events together to create a special effect. An example of this experience
obtained when attending the movies: the house lights dim, the drum roll from
the sound track plays, the curtain opens and the movie begins to play. You can
create exactly this effect by using C-Bus scenes. Anything on your C-Bus
system can be included in a scene. Ask your installer for information on how
scenes can be used to set special moods.

In addition to these features of C-Bus the 12 Channel Professional Series

Dimmer can store 32 unique Scenes. These Scenes relate to the 12 output
channels of the unit and any other C-Bus output devices which use the same
C-Bus Group Addresses as the 12 Channel Professional Series Dimmer.

To select a scene to program go to the Scenes tab of the GUI. In the upper left
corner of the GUI is the scene selection box. To select a scene number to
configure simply click on the arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display
a list of scenes, 1..32. Click on the scene number that you wish to configure.

5.7.1 Scene Mode

Each 1 of the 32 Scenes in the unit can be configured as either a Basic or
Advanced Scene.

A Basic Scene allows the remote triggering of Scenes in the same manner
as those available in C-Touch, Neo, Reflections, Scene Master or Scene
Controller. In this manner using the Recall function from a conventional
key unit to recall a C-Bus Action Selector on the Control Application can
trigger a Scene.

An Advanced Scene is a new type of Scene that has not been used on
other C-Bus products until now. It links a Scene to one entire C-Bus Group
Address. Recalling an Action Selector between $00 and $FF will cause the
unit to create a Scene that is scaled in between the On and Off Scenes,
depending upon the particular Action Selector used

The mode of the scene is selected by simply clicking in one of the radio
buttons in the ‘Scene Mode’ box on the right hand side of the GUI.

Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.7.1.1 Basic Scene Mode

Basic Scenes function in a manner that is consistent with the
current range of C-Bus products. The Scene applies to one or more
output channels of the unit and any other devices on the local
network that share the C-Bus Group Addresses with those of output
channels in the unit.

© Copyright 2003 Clipsal Integrated Systems Pty Ltd. Page 17

Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.7.1.2 Advanced Scene Mode

Each 1 of the 32 Scenes in the unit can be configured as either a
Basic or Advanced Scene. An Advanced Scene is a new type of
Scene that has not been used on other C-Bus products until now. It
links a Scene to one entire C-Bus Group Address.

Both an On and an Off Scene can be defined, such that when the
C-Bus Control Application Group is Off the Off Scene will be applied
to the output channels and when the C-Bus Control Application
Group is On the On Scene will be applied to the output channels.

When the Control Application Group is at any level between the On

and Off state the unit will interpolate between the On and Off
Scenes and set the output channels accordingly.

Look at the following table for an example of output channel level

for an Advanced Scene configuration.

Scene Scene Output Level, Output Level, Output Level,

Channel
Off On Group @ 0% Group @ 50% Group @ 100%

1 0% 100% 0% 50% 100%

2 10% 100% 10% 55% 100%

3 0% 70% 0% 35% 70%

4 30% 80% 30% 55% 80%

5.7.2 Scene Configuration

5.7.2.1 Scene Trigger Group
The Scene Control Group refers to the C-Bus Control Application
Trigger Group on the Control Application that you wish to use to
trigger the Scene.

Note that both the Trigger Group and the Action Selector must be
specified for remote triggering of a Scene.
5.7.2.2 Action Selector
The Action Selector refers to the C-Bus Action Selector on the
selected Trigger Group that you wish to use to trigger the Scene.
The Action Selector is not applicable to an Advanced Scene and is
therefore not selectable in this mode.

Note that both the Trigger Group and the Action Selector must be
specified for remote triggering of a Basic Scene.

Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.7.3 Scene On
The Scene On tab allows configuration of the Channel Levels and Ramp
Rates when the Scene is triggered.

On the left hand side of this tab are the 12 output channels and drop-down
boxes that allow the user to specify the output level for each channel.

To set the output level for each output channel simply click on the arrow
on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available output levels.
Click on the output level that you wish to use.

In the centre of this tab is another drop-down box that allows a Ramp Rate
to be specified for the Scene. This determines the rate at which the unit
will fade its output channels to the settings in the Scene when the Scene is
triggered. This setting applies to all channels.

To set the fade rate for the Scene for all output channels simply click on
the arrow on the side of the drop-down box to display a list of available
fade rates. Click on the fade rate that you wish to use.

Note that unit output channels that share the same C-Bus Group Address
will automatically be assigned the same output level.

Intelligent Building Series C-Bus 12 Channel Professional Architectural Dimmer Programming Guide

5.7.4 Scene Off

Under Advanced Mode the Off Scene also requires configuration. The
settings for the Off Scene are the same as those for the On Scene, except
to remember that the Off Scene gets triggered when the Control
Application Group associated with the Scene turns Off.

If using a C-Bus key unit to control the Advanced Scene the key unit fade
rate should be set to the same fade rate as that used in the Advanced
Scene. This will ensure best performance.

All options in the off scene cannot be selected in Basic Scene Mode as the
Off Scene does not apply in Basic Scene Mode.

5.10 Downloading Data

When you click OK at any time in the GUI the following dialogue box will
appear. Selecting Network will transfer the data to the unit on the network.
Selecting Database will save the current configuration to the database on your
local PC.

Three options relating to Scenes are available and are selectable by the radio
buttons on the Save Options box.

Selecting Download No Scenes will only download the unit configuration data
without any of the Scenes in the unit. This is very useful if no changes to
Scenes have been made or Scenes are not being used.

Download Modified Scenes will only download the Scenes to the unit that have
been changed since the GUI was last opened. This is very useful if you are
modifying an existing Scene in the unit.

Download All Scens will download all 32 Scenes to the unit. This is very useful if
you want configure the unit in the database first and then transfer the Scenes to
the unit at a later date. This option must be used whenever you want to transfer
Scenes that already exist in the database to a unit.

How long the download takes depends upon how many of the Scenes have
been used. If no Scenes are used the download time will be approximately 12
seconds. If all 32 Scenes are used the download time could be up to 2 minutes.

The above progress bar will be displayed during the download.
