Bureaucratic System of Education: Shall we continue to be conformist in nature

and reluctant to innovate?

Why do we have school in the first place? What is the purpose of schooling and teaching?

For many, the general purpose of school is to transfer knowledge and prepare young people to

participate in our democratic society. 21st century education would argue that the purpose of

schools must be preparing children to compete in the global environment. School is a place where

children go to gain skills to enter the workforce. School is intended to prepare its students to be

citizens in a democratic society. But in practice, it trains them in submission to arbitrary authority.

Friedenberg claim that school’s today is under a bureaucratic system run by administrators

who do not like to create waves are somewhat true. High school students have no inalienable rights;

they have privileges, granted to them in exchange for submission and conformity, and taken away

without reason or recourse. The degree to which this is so varies from school to school — students

from upper-class families have more resources for resistance. Some teachers disliked the idea of

having to deal with such students for that very reason. Many teachers liked having their small

measure of authority and resented any student who weighed it lightly.

Teacher’s, especially those teaching in the lower levels such as elementary and secondary

who had teachers that is still teaching traditionally and does not conform to innovations. They are

contented of their old ways of teaching wherein they just do what they had to do for them to obtain

grades for the students report card at the end of every quarter. They are disregarding the students

rational thinking and enabling them to grow as individuals who knows where they stand and can

fought what they think is right. If we future teachers to be innovative we should not train them to

be the “sage on the stage”. Welcome every idea that they have and help them realize that ideas.

Every individual should have a say for this community to prosper. 21st century learning should

focus on the students’ needs and capabilities, teachers nowadays should act as facilitators and let

every student discover their own way of learning for it is more meaningful this way. Teaching

should not only focus on the academic side of learning, we must inculcate needed values for the

students to develop into a person who is able to lead the lead the country towards progress for they

are the hope of this nation. Their future depends on how we mold them.

To sum it all, it is indeed important that we let our students speak. We must not let them

be grabbed off their rights and privileges without reason. These students are not robot that will just

do what a teacher tells them to do without voicing out their ideas or protest. Todays learner are

hungry for learning that could not be satisfied by just the traditional way of teaching which is the

teacher is the only source of information. Training these students to create waves would mean

ensuring our future generation if not educators to be innovative and restructure the present status

of our education system.
