CAREGIVER MANAGEMENT IN GUILLAIN BARRE SYNDROME (GBS) - THE INDIAN

SCENARIO

ABSTRACT

This article is written for the Indian caregivers i.e family members, friends or relatives of Guillain Barre’
Syndrome (GBS) patients. GBS is a rare syndrome. A syndrome is a combination of diseases. Normally a
disease affects a particular organ but a syndrome may attack more than one organ. GBS is a syndrome.
This disease needs a collective effort of a panel of doctors specialized in various fields like neurology,
nephrology, pulmonology, cardiology as per patient requirement. The role of the caregiver is prominent.
A caregiver could be a family or a non-family member. Generally a parent, adult child, spouse or nearest
kin is a primary care giver. This article highlights the importance of care giving and training in care
giving. It shows the potential of semi-skilled to highly skilled personnel in improving the human survival
rates. This article is dedicated to those who Suffered GBS and is written with the hope that caregivers and
patients benefit from the experiences of other GBS survivors and care givers. This article also marks the
importance of management in caregiving.
