Noise

‘Noise refers to all those factors that


disrupt the communication.’

Noise
Noise can be classified as:
1. Physical noise: Distracting sounds,
poor acoustics, etc.
2. Physiological noise: Hearing or other
disabilities, fatigue, memory
capacity.
3. Psychological noise: Emotions,
preoccupied mind, fear, lack of
interest, etc.

Physical surroundings

A good ambience favours good


communication,

Similarly, unfavourable ambience can


lead to poor communication.

Cultural Barrier
o Nationality, religion, language,
gender, etc. could influence the
communication.
o There is anxiety regarding unfamiliar
cultures.

Lack of Planning
o Communication is not a casual affair
o It needs:
Careful planning
Suitable timing
Suitable place

Organizational Barrier
o Poor communication culture: system/
management does not encourage
open communication.
o Filtering and editing. Loss of
information, as it moves down and
also goes up {suppression}.
o Distortion and delay: caused by lack
of understanding or neglect.
o More levels, more chances of filtering.

Linguistic and Semantic barriers
o Language is a powerful tool, and a tricky one
too. It needs to be handled carefully.
o English language has words with multiple
meanings e.g. charge, ring, suit, spring, etc.
o It has words pronounced in diff. ways e.g..
Wind, minute, etc.
o Similar sounding words eg. Flour/flower,
site/cite/sight, weak/week, etc.

o Semantic means pertaining to or
arising from the different meanings of
words. e.g.
Were you there last Monday?
Were you there last Monday?

MEDIUM
o Wrong choice of medium can be a
barrier
o Defects in the devices used for
transmitting messages.
o Messages can be delayed , distorted
or even lost with wrong choice of
medium or defect in the medium

Cross cultural Barrier
o Culture-Shared set of values and
attributes/characteristics of a group.
o People are addressed in diff. ways in
Diff. cultures.
o Some cultures give imp to time and
some to relationships.
o Values-our ideas of good and evil
forms the basis of our behaviour.

Information overload
o People make errors when too much of
information is loaded on them.
o Response may be delayed or
response can be selective.
o In the electronic age Information
overload is a big problem.

Goal conflicts
o Clashes of goals of various units or
sub units.
o Goal conflicts can act as
‘communication reduction exercise’.
o Interest of an organization suffer.
