Grinding Mill Inching Drive
Outotec hydraulic inching drive system - Improving
equipment safety and maintenance productivity
The Outotec hydraulic inching drive system functions
as a grinding mill auxiliary drive that is utilized during
installation or maintenance. It is capable of rotating
the mill in either direction, and is rated for continuous
operation when used periodically. The unit consists of
a drive unit and a Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU).
The portable nature of the system allows for its use
on multiple mills. For each additional mill, selected
optional parts would be required including: a base
plate, coupling half and coupling guard.

Genuine captive key interlock
Drive unit
The drive unit consists of a foot mounted planetar y
gearbox powered by a hydraulic drive motor. It is
equipped with a pressure release brake that will
automatically hold the mill’s position in the event
of hydraulic pressure loss. The gearbox drive shaft
is fitted with a moveable coupling to engage the
pinion shaft.
Proximity sensors located on the coupling guard
indicate coupling position. A Kirk ® key interlock is
also provided to ensure the main drive and inching
drive are not allowed to operate simultaneously.
The interlock system is a genuine captive key
arrangement whereby the key may not be removed
unless the coupling is fully disengaged.
Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU)
The HPU is supplied with all instrumentation, hydraulic
hoses, push buttons and controls necessary for
operation. It is also equipped with a remote pendant
control to allow for hydraulic motor operation from a
distance of up to 3m standard. (Additional cable can be
supplied upon request.) A linear joystick is utilized to
control forward and reverse rotation of the mill. The
joystick allows for continuously variable mill rotation
speeds (up to the designed inching speed) for precise
mill alignment.
The HPU is supplied with an on-board conditioning
circuit to cool and filter the oil, which allows for
intermittent continuous operation. A filling pump is
also supplied to pump and filter oil from the barrel to
the HPU reservoir.

Robust drive unit design
■■ Variable mill speed from ~0 to 0.2 rpm allows the
operator to creep the mill into perfect position.
