A Columbus man died in a Sat-

urday night crash after attempting
to flee police, according to author-

Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt.
Derrick Beckom, in a Sunday after-
noon press release, said 23-year-
old Brandon Perry was driving
west on Highway 12 when his car
went off the north side of the road.
According to the release, Beckom’s
car then crossed back onto the
highway and collided with a tree on
the road.
Starkville Police Department, in
a press release issued later Sunday
afternoon, confirmed the wreck.
According to SPD’s release, an of-
ficer saw a vehicle that did not stop
at an MHP checkpoint at Highway
12 and Pat Station Road. The offi-

Emerson Family School

Pictured from left to right are Joan Butler, Nakesha Weaver, Starkville Mayor Lynn Spruill, Elmarie Carr-Brooks and
Barbara Culberson during Emerson Family School’s Step Up For Kids event on Oct. 23. More than 100 children
and families were in attendance and enjoyed the opportunity to interact, participate in games and activities, and
celebrate children in our community. Each year Step Up for Kids brings together thousands of people to show
widespread support for investments in children and families. Participants include child advocates, politicians,
parents and children. These non-partisan events across the nation raise awareness among citizens and political
leaders of the issues facing children and families. Some of these issues include poverty, health, lack of access
to high-quality affordable child care, early learning opportunities and after-school programs.
