CHAPTER : Introduction
FOREWORD
AUDIENCE
Level II - Service personnel who understand the principles of machine systems operation, diagnostic
equipment, and procedures for testing and adjusting.
CONTENT
This presentation contains the information and visuals necessary to develop a Level II course of
instruction on the hydraulic and Electronic Control Unit (ECU) systems for the 300B Hydraulic
Excavator. The major topics covered include the similarities and differences between the 300B and the
former 300A, component locations and functions,operation of the hydraulic and electronic systems,
the various service functions available, and operation of the auxiliaries electronic control system.
,.
OBJECTIVES
After learning the information in this presentation, the serviceman will be able to:
1. locate and identify the major components of the hydraulic, ECU and monitor panel system ;
2. locate and identify the major components of the hydraulic pump group;
3. explain the function and operation of each major component;
4. trace the flow of oil through the hydraulic system;
5. Identify all input and output signals for the ECU and monitor panel; and
6. access and perform the various diagnostic procedures.

CHAPTER : POST TEST
Directions: Modified True/False. If a question is false, underline or circle the word or words that make
the statement incorrect and replace with word(s) to make the statement correct.
Hydraulic Excavator
Example: _____ 1. This is an TTT class.
____ 1. When investigating a power complaint, determine if the complaint is hydraulic or engine
related.
____ 2. On power mode III margin pressure adjustment is regulated by the electronic power
control unit.
____ 3. When power shift pressure to the implement pump regulators increases, the pumps
upstroke.
____ 4. Swing actuation pressure is measured at the pressure tap on the swing motor inlet
line.
____ 5. The system pressure for the logic circuit is adjusted using the pilot relief valve on the
pilot manifold.
____ 6. The Electronic Control System regulates the powershift pressure to the implement
pumps to keep the engine from stalling.
____ 7. When the implement pumps are at standby, the NFC signal pressure is highest.
____ 8. The auxiliary electronic controller is sending a PWM signal to the main pump
proportional reducing valve to control the output flow of the main pumps.
____ 9. The main hydraulic pumps upstroke when the NFC pressure increases.
____ 10. The implement pump flow is controlled by three different signal pressures sent to the
pump regulators.

11. The 325 hex main hydraulic pump begins destroking at approximately __________ of system
pressure.
A. Power mode I
B. Power mode II
C. Power mode III
D. Backup mode
13. The load sensing control on the implement pump is adjusted to maintain __________ margin
pressure.
14. On tampig mode the hydraulic system and the main pump controls receive signal pressure
monitored by __________.
15. The main system pressure relief valve is adjusted to __________ for implement functions.

CHAPTER : POST TEST
Students may use appropriate service literature and class notes to complete the case study.
- What is the first step that should be performed in a logical troubleshooting procedure?
- What additional steps should be performed to locate the source of the "low power" complaints?
List the steps you would go through in your troubleshooting procedure to identify the cause of the "low
power" complaint.
