Unit #2

Interactions of Matter/Chemistry Vocabulary

For the following words, you must 1) write the word, 2) rewrite (copy) the given definition, 3) draw a
picture for the word, and 4) put the definition into your own words. You may use the sheets provided or
you can create your own format. Each list of words will count as a homework grade (4 total). You will
have a vocabulary quiz on all of the words on Tuesday, December 18th (Quiz grade).
You WILL NOT be able to use your lists on the vocab quiz.

List #1 - Due Wednesday, November 14th

1. Boiling Point - temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas at a given pressure
2. Physical Changes - a change which occurs without changing the identity of the substance.
3. Physical Properties - a characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of
the substance
4. Chemical change - the process in which one or more substances are changed into one or more new
substances
5. Chemical properties - property that can be observed only when a substance is changed into a new
substance
6. Density -the measure of mass of a substance per unit volume

List #1 – Due Tuesday, November 27th

1. Matter: anything that has mass and occupies space
2. Exothermic: energy (heat) is released
3. Endothermic: energy (heat) is absorbed
4. Atom: the basic particle from which all elements are made
5. Element: a pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical
means
6. Compound: a pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined
7. Mixture: two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined
8. Homogeneous mixture: A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed and cannot be seen
9. Heterogeneous mixture: A mixture in which substances are unevenly distributed and can be seen
10. Solution: a mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another
11. Solute: the part of a solution present in a lesser amount and dissolved by the solvent
12. Solvent: a substance that dissolves another substance
List #3 – Due Tuesday, December 4th
1. Atomic mass: the average mass of all the isotopes of an element
2. Atomic number: the number of protons in a nucleus of an atom
3. Electrons: a negatively charged particle that orbits the nucleus of an atom
4. Metal: solid materials that usually hard, shiny, malleable, fusible and ductile with good
electrical and thermal conductivity and are found on the left side of the periodic table
5. Metalloid: elements whose properties are in between metals and solid nonmetals, good
semiconductors
6. Neutrons: subatomic particle without an electric charge, found in the nucleus of an atom
7. Nonmetal: elements that are poor conductors of heat and electricity and are found on the
right side of the periodic table
8. Periodic Table: a table of the chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number
9. Protons: positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom
10. Reactivity: tendency of a substance to undergo a reaction by itself or with other materials
and to release energy
11. Subatomic Particles: particles that make up atoms including protons, neutrons and
electrons

List #4 - Due Tuesday, December 11th

1. Chemical equation - A written representation of a chemical reaction, in which the symbols
and amounts of the reactants are separated from those of the products by an arrow.
Example H2O→ H2 + O
2. Chemical reaction - a process that involves the rearrangement of the molecules or atoms of a
substance
3. Law of Conservation of Mass - matter can be changed from one form into another, mixtures
can be separated or made, and pure substances can be decomposed, but the total amount of
mass remains constant. Mass can neither be created or destroyed.
4. Precipitate - a solid that forms out of a solution that has undergone a chemical reaction
5. Products - the things that are produced as a result of a reaction, everything to the right of
the arrow
6. Reactants - the things that react to make a product, everything to the left of the arrow
