SOLAR STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM
The solar streetlights work on the principle of the photovoltaic cell or solar cell The solar cell
converts solar energy to the elactrical energy which is stored inthe battery. The solar lamp draws
the currentfrom this batteryand itrequires no other witing,
Working of Solar Street Lights
‘The solar streetlights use solar energy, 2 farm af the renewable energy. These days it's common to
see the solar street lamps along the sides of roads. The solar street lights comprise of the
photovoltaic cells, which absorb the solar energy during daytime. The photoveltaic cells convert
solar energy into electrical energy, whichis stored in the battery. At the nighttime the lamp starts
automaticaly andit consumes the electrcityalreacy storedinthe battery. During the daytime the
battery getsrechargec andthe process keeps on repeating every day.
Solar LED lights
LED stands for ight emitting dlode. LED comprises af the chemical compound that gives of the
light when direct current (00) from the battery passes through it. Solar LEDS are available from
hhumber of companies in different sizes, shapes and styles. The life of LED is usually very high
extending up to0,000 hours. The LEDs require verylittle current hence the solar panels of smaller
sizes arerequiredfor the sola lights with LEDlamps.Centralisedsolarsystems
In centralised solar systems, the solar system Is separated from each streetlight to provide
power to a cluster of streetlights. Although this system has problems of its awn, itis
considered a more viable option for converting existing streetlights to solar power for the
followingreasons:
‘The existing infrastructure such as poles and wiring does not have to be replaced to
accommodate the solarsystem,
‘The system does not have the same limitations asthe stand-alone system, The result s
that the solar system can be designed to be as big as required with enough batteries and
panelsto pravide enough power tothelights
‘Thesolar panels can be placed awvay fram any shade tooptimise power generation.
+ The batteries will be housed in an IP6S, well-ventilated battery cabinet which can be
Insulated to provide maximum protection againstheat
‘The system can easily be equipped with a monitoring device to alert authorities of any
tamper
Wf oF removal of equipment. This wil not eliminate the threat of theft but will
reducetthe responsetimesothe ul
could becaughtred hanged,
‘The monitoring device can keep control on one or many systems, Most large inverters are
equipped to faciitate monitoring software which wil not only alert the relevant people of
any maintenance issues, butalso to send alerts ithe system s over-heatingor if moisture
(s Getected in the system. This will assist the munkeipaites to better understand the
system and to avoldmajorreplacementof equipment.
‘The maintenance will be done at one point for several lights and combined with the
‘monitoring system; maintenance could simply be done on the system from a central
computer.
‘The main drawback of the centralised solar system is that cables must be laid to each pole
where a stand-alone system does not require cabling, It is the author's opinion that the
additional cost related to stand-alone systems such as stronger poles, battery boxes, solar
panelsand the risk of additional maintenance will outweigh the cost of installing centralised
