he manages to capture and encapsulate the
difficulties and dangers of these operations
without straying into the territory of the
wide-eyed adulation where everything that SF

Their work is dangerous, dirty and necessary

some respects increasing. Although the world is
statistically a safer place than it has ever been,
you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise.
The requirement for the skills possessed by
Special Forces around the world is not diminished
simply because politicians have decided that an
end-game has been reached in this country or
that. If you want an understanding of what these
secretive units are truly capable of and why they
remain so important to the maintenance of peace
and freedom, this book is definitely for you. It is
a history book for our times, and we suspect for
many years yet to come.

In use the Glock made short world of the basic cutting tasks and although it helped us carve

you would really notice this if you were trying to do finer carving work although in fairness
that sort of thing is not what this knife was intended for. Being second hand the cutting edge
was our responsibility, the makers original edge having long since been worn. You probably
wouldn’t want to shave with this (buy a razor!) but the steel takes a good working edge and is
easy to sharpen.
In our opinion you would choose this if the idea of it being both a Glock and a military knife
appealed to you. As stated ours was cheap, new these cost about the same as the Mora and
the Jaguar, either of which are more convenient to carry and use. It is imposing and certainly
seems to be as tough as nails. This one has never let us down, but in the face of such good
competition probably wouldn’t be our first choice to pack into the wilderness.

SIMILAR TO THE JAGUAR AT 3.2MM.
So far so good. What is immediately apparent is the fact that no matter how well made a folder
is it will almost always feel less solid than a fixed blade knife, and the Gator is no exception.
There is nothing wrong with the lock, the action can be tightened using a Torx key the design has
to have some minor movement in it otherwise it just won’t work as intended.
In use, the fact that this was a folder was of no consequence. The Gator slices it’s way
merrily through pretty much anything and carves with ease, thanks to that exceptional
edge and great control afforded by the grip. There is nothing to choose between this knife
and all the other on the basis of performance. The ‘but’ if of course the fact that the blade
will never feel as secure or as solid as any of the others on test. We are well aware that
we are comparing apples and oranges here and none of this is a criticism of Gerber’s
standards or production.
We have used Gerber knives for years and love them however in the bushcraft
category we cannot help feeling that we would be that little bit happier with
a fixed design. Although you shouldn’t be using any of the knives tested for
levering or prying, we know that occasionally it happens and having a hinge the
Gator just doesn’t feel like it could cope as well as the others.
