    LATIN MAXIM ENGLISH TRANSLATION

    cessante ratione legis, cessat et ipsa lex When the reason for the law ceases, the law itself ceases
    Ratio legis est anima reason of the law is its soul
    impossibilium nulla obligatio est no obligation to do an impossible thing
    Verba accipienda sunt secundum materiam A word is to be understood in the context in which it is used
    Generalia verba sunt generaliter intelligenda A general statement is understood in a general sense
    Ubi lex non distinguit, nec nos distinguere debemus Where the laws does not distinguish we should not distinguish
    Nosciter a sociis Be presumed to have a meaning similar to that of words associated with it.
