What are materials?

Materials are the substances we use to make things.

Materials.

They are divided into two groups:

1. Natural materials: are found in nature. There are three types:

1. Natural materials that come from animals: wool, leather, silk.
2. Natural materials that come from plants: wood, cotton and hemp.
3. Natural materials that come from minerals: marble, granite.
2. Man-made materials: not found in nature.
They are manufactured from substances found in nature called material prima. Some examples are:
- Paper made of wood. It’s for books, notebooks, newspapers…
- Iron made of minerals. It’s used for construction.
- Plastic made of petroleum. They are used for toys, objects…
- Ceramic made of clay. It’s used for pottery.

What are machines?

Machines are objects we use to make work easier. Machines help us to save time and energy.

Machines and energy: All machines use energy to work. They use different types of energy.

 Some machines work using human force: screwdriver or pliers.

 Other machines use electrical energy: TV, fridge, washing machine.
 Other machines use energy from fuel: car, plane, boat.
 Other machines use energy from water or wind: windmill, sailboat.
