Lesson Idea Name: Moon Cycle

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th
Content Standard Addressed: S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the effects of
the position and motion of the Earth and the moon in relation to the sun as observed from the Earth.
Element: b. Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating pattern of the phases of
the moon (new, crescent, quarter, gibbous, and full).

Technology Standard Addressed:

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Because the students will be using their phones or tablets, they can more easily see the questions and answer
choices. If the students cannot see the question on the board, they can enlarge the text on their device and
work off of that. This assignment can also be helpful to the students who are hard of hearing since they have
the liberty to manipulate the questions they see.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to this activity, I would tell students what I would be assessing them on (the moon cycle). I would tell
them that there are only 8 questions based on the 8 phases of the moon. Kahoot is a game that shows the top
five leading students in the game. The students who make the top five at the end of the Kahoot round would
be given a reward.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the activity, the students will be shown the question along with a picture of the moon phase. They will
be given a minute to look at the phase and submit their answers. Once everyone has submitted their answers

for the question, I will display he array of answers, discuss any misconceptions and study what I need to
readdress once the activity is over.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☒ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the activity is over, I will go over the most commonly missed questions to help the students understand
why they got those phases confused. I will also give prizes to the students who landed in the top five leading
board.
How will the data be used?
This data will be collected after the activity is over. The teacher will be able to look over the students answers
and adjust his/her lesson plan to target the problem areas in the activity. This will be used for both the
students and the teacher. This activity gives the students a fun, interactive way to learn with healthy
competition while the teacher has the opportunity to focus on the areas he/she needs to work on with their
students.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
This activity allows the students to be engaged in an interactive assignment that can show their memorization
skills along with their competitive side in the classroom. When students are given a competition, they are
more likely to be engaged in the assignment. My goal in this assignment is to see how quickly the students
can respond to the question while gaining the correct answer. Based on my learning, I learn from making
mistakes on occasion. If these students get the answer incorrect on Kahoot, they can learn from their mistake
and gain the correct answer to use in future test, quizzes and assignments.
Reflective Practice:
This activity shows students what areas they need to improve on and study more. Students are driven by
competition and this activity is a great outlet for them while including learning in the mix. After the lesson is
over, I could give the students a quiz after in order to test what they just learned on Kahoot.
