What Do We See When We Go Camping?

Theme: Camping
Grade: Kindergarten
Subject: Science, Language Arts
Time: 45 minutes

Subject Area Integration:


 The teacher will be reading the students a book about camping and some
animals that you could encounter. Students will be participating in science
and language arts during this lesson. They will be listening to the story and
creating a chart showing the different types of animals that are
mentioned.

Illinois Early Learning Standards:


 K-ESS3-1. Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of

different plants and animals (including humans) and the places they live.

 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.1.With prompting and support, ask and answer


questions about key details in a text.

Objectives:
 Students will be able to recall the different types of animals that you may
encounter when camping
 Students will be able to identify different animal tracks

Materials:
 The book Stella and Roy Go Camping by Ashley Wolff
 Dry erase marker
 Pencils
 Paper

Procedures:
`1. Students will begin by sitting on the carpet. The teacher will discuss the

schedule for the day and that they will be talking about different plants and

animals that you could see when camping. The teacher will then ask the

students if they know some plants and animals that you might see when

camping.

2. The teacher will then read the book Stella and Roy Go Camping. The teacher

will tell the students to pay attention to the different animals that are mentioned.

The teacher will also ask the students what animals they see in the pictures.

3. After the book is finished, the students will sit down in their seats and be given

a piece of paper and a pencil.

4. The teacher will ask the students if they remember any of the animals that

were mentioned in the book. As the students name animals, the teacher will write

them down on the board and the students will write them down on their paper.

5. The teacher will then go over what they wrote down.

Adaptations for Students with Special Needs:

 Students with visual impairments will sit near the teacher during the

reading of the story and will sit close to the board so that they can see what

the teacher is writing.


 Students with physical disabilities will have a designated spot on the carpet

and will be given ample space to move about the classroom and to their

desk.

 Students with hearing impairments will be sat near the teacher on the

carpet and at his or her desk so that they can hear what the teacher is

saying.

Assessment:

 Students will be informally assessed if they are participating in the story

reading and if they are able to recall animals that were mentioned in the

story.

 Students will be informally assessed if they are writing down and

contributing to what is written on the board.
