Methodology

Research Locale

The study will be conducted at Parang High School located

at Marikina City. Parang High School is a public secondary
school established in 1995 as an annex of Marikina High
School. The school assumed independent status and now
represents as one of the three largest public high school in
Marikina City.

The school offers Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM), Accountancy and Business Management (ABM)
and General Academic Strand(GAS) strands for the academic
track in Senior High School. In addition, the school also
offers Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Domestic
Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning (DOMRAC), as well as
Bread, Pastry, Food and Beverage Services (BPFBS) for senior
high school Technical-Vocational and Livelihood (TVL) track.

The researchers will hand-out questionnaires directly to

the respondents and the results will be tallied after
completing the survey. Data gathering among the respondents
will be conducted during the first quarter of the second
semester of the School Year (S.Y.) 2017 – 2018. All procedures
will be conducted during regular class hours from 12:30 in
the afternoon and 6:50 in the evening.

Samples and Sampling Technique

The study will utilize the probability sampling method

following the Stratified Random Sampling Technique.
Respondents will be selected from the 10% of the population
of 490 students in grade 11. Fifty students will be selected
as respondents by randomly selecting from each class of the
Grade 11 students in Parang High School.

Data Gathering Instrument

The Physical Appearance Comparison Scale (PACS) adopted

from “The Development and Validation of the Physical
Appearance Scale” (Lauren M. Schaefer, 2013) is the
instrument that will be utilized for measuring the level of
self-comparison of the respondents. In this case, respondents
will be asked on how often they felt or compare in a certain
way.

PACS is consisted of 40 questions. The questions in this

scale ask the respondents thinking about how they generally
compare theirselves to others. Sample items in PACS are “When
I’m out in public I compare my physical appearance to the
appearance of others” and “When I’m eating in a restaurant,
I compare my weight to the weight of others”. The
questionnaires are comprised of 40 statements scored by 5-
point Likert –Agreement Scale.

Presented below is the Likert interval used to score the

questionnaires:

5 – 0.9 Never

4 – 1.9 Seldom

3 – 2.9 Sometimes

2 – 3.9 Often

1 – 4.9 Always

Similarly, a correlating instrument in the form of
Socio-Cultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire
(SATAQ) adopted from “The Delevelopment and Validation of the
Physical Appearance Scale” (Lauren M. Schaefer, 2013) will
also be utilized in the investigation. This instrument will
measure the level of Attitudes of the respondents.

The SATAQ is consisted of 22 statements. It provides

statement such as “It is important for me to look athletic”
and “I feel pressure from the media to decrease my level of
body fat”. Presented below is the Likert interval used to
score the questionnaires:

4 – 0.9 Definitely disagree

3 – 1.9 Mostly disagree

2 – 2.9 Neither agree nor disagree

1 – 3.9 Mostly disagree

Data Gathering Procedures

The Permission to conduct a survey on Grade 11 PHS-SHS

students will be sought from the principal and the adviser of
the selected Grade 11 PHS-SHS class. Physical Appearance
Comparison (PAC) and Socio-cultural Attitudes Towards
Appearance (SATA) questionnaires will be personally
administered to Grade 11 students on their free time during
school days. The respondents will not be allowed to bring
home the questionnaires for purposes of easy recovery and
spontaneity of responses. The time frame for surveying all
respondents would start from January 2018.

Data Analysis Plan

Spearmans rho means test to measure the dependence of

the dependent variable to the independent variable.
Acceptance of null hypothesis would be based on the results
of the statistical analysis. All data treatment will be
assessed at 0.05 level of significance.
