4. A ground water sample is investigated, and it is found that the water is contaminated by excessive manganese (Mn)
and sulfate ( SO24 ) ions.
What may be the potential source of this ground water pollution? Justify your answer. (4)
Ans: - The ground water sample was contaminated by excessive manganese (Mn) and sulfate ions ( SO24 ). As we know
the mineral salts are the main source of manganese and sulfate ions in the ground water so, we can say that, the source
of sample water was contaminated by natural sources. The minerals might be mixed with soil or the rock and when
ground water flowed through the soil, the mineral salts were dissolved in the water and the salt produced Mn 2+ and SO42-
ions in the water. And it became contaminated.
