Introduction
Thank you for taking the time to consider my application packet. I

thought it beneficial to provide information about where I live and work
for some context:
University of North Texas

The University of North Texas (UNT) is located in Denton, a town of about 131,000
people only 36 miles north of Dallas-Fort Worth, the country’s fourth-largest
metropolitan area. The university is the 24th largest public university in the United
States and has a diverse student population of over 36,000. UNT is a Tier One research
institution that offers 101 bachelor’s, 82 master’s, and 38 doctoral degree programs
http://unt.edu and awards an average of more than 8400 degrees annually.
College of Visual Arts & Design

The College of Visual Arts & Design (CVAD) is home to over 2,100 students
and is one of the largest visual arts colleges in the U.S. The college houses thirteen
programs in three departments–Art Education & Art History, Design, and Studio Art–
http://art.unt.edu and offers BA, BFA, MA, MFA, and PhD degrees.
Department of Art Education & Art History

The Department of Art Eduction & Art History offers six degrees in three programs.
Students may earn undergraduate or graduate degrees in Art Education: Visual Art
Studies or in Art History, and the department offers an undergraduate degree in
Interdiscplinary Art & Design Studies as well as a graduate certificate in Art Museum
Education.
Art Education: Visual Art Studies

The Art Education program at the University of North Texas offers a BFA degree to
prepare preservice undergraduate students for careers as state-certified EC-12 school
art teachers or in other educational roles in community and cultural art programs as
well as to pursue graduate degrees. At the graduate level, three track options are
available for MA students who want to obtain state teaching certification, pursue
careers in museum education, or who want to focus on research through the thesis
option in preparation for doctoral studies. The University of North Texas offers the
first and only PhD program in art education in Texas. Its faculty seek to “promote and
facilitate philosophical, theoretical, socio-political, and methodological inquiry in the
field. We are interested in the development of radical inquiry, meaning inquiry into
commonly held assumptions about education, art and design, art institutions, and
society.”

STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I have taught art appreciation, art history, art education and studio courses during the
past ten years with a focus on diversity, feminist/queer theory, and visual culture. My
research and pedagogy are guided by Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity
in conversation with Julia Serano’s discussion of oppositional sexism. Additionally, my
teaching is influenced by critical pedagogy and methodology. Technology, its theories
and application, and in particular emerging digital technologies (e.g., social media), play a
prominent role in my research and teaching practice.
I teach online art appreciation courses at a local community college; and for three years,
I taught courses in computers in art education and global aesthetics for undergraduate
preservice art educators at the University of North Texas. My goal is for students to
critically examine their lives and experiences and that of their future students, through/
within the intersections of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and other constructed
identities. In my courses we analyze these subjectivities through multiple theoretical
lenses, e.g., feminist epistemology, visual culture, and critical pedagogy. The objective
is to explore histories, past and present, in which non-dominant groups, e.g., LGBTQ,
people of color and different abilities and working-class groups have been and continue
to be devalued. We explore how these groups have been represented, but most
importantly, how they represent themselves in various fields for example, in literature,
film, visual culture, research, and art. My goal is to help students understand and analyze
pressing issues faced by marginalized groups in contemporary times, for example,
poverty, lack of opportunities, violence based on race and sexual orientation, and
intellectual colonialism.
Through these explorations, students are encouraged to become critical thinkers to

analyze how knowledge and power is embedded and affirmed through social institutions

Course Description: 3 credit hours. Exploration of the role of computers as
a tool in visual arts studies. Emphasis placed on the visual, conceptual and
practical use of computers as a medium for making art and connections to the
practice of art education.
This course meets 6 hours per week in a computer lab/studio. This course blends
theory with practical application in the classroom as students learn digital
technology uses and how to teach them with instructor consultations.

AEAH 4760 Visual Arts Studies: A Global Examination of Aesthetics

Course Description: 3 hours. A cross-cultural examination of philosophical
aesthetic issues in art, focusing on the relationship of art to culture.
The purpose of the Global Aesthetics course is to explore aesthetic philosophies

and expressions across cultures and in connection with contemporary art and
visual studies education. In this course, students explore how art education can
encompass a broader reflection of global art and cultural aesthetics. The course is

AEAH 5767 Issues and Applications of Technology in Art Education

Course Description: 3 hours. Historical and philosophical issues related to the
use of technology and digital imagery in the art classroom, as well as advanced
application of technology to enhance the acquisition and manipulation of
knowledge and imagery.
This graduate-level course is combined with AEAH 3770. Graduate students have

Course Description: 3 hours. A general introduction to the visual arts designed
to create an appreciation of the vocabulary, media, techniques, and purposes
of the creative process. Students will critically interpret and evaluate works of
art within formal, cultural, and historical contexts. General education course
open to all; design principles from the layman’s point of view.
In this freshman-level course, I teach students from varying backgrounds and with
differing abilities, most of whom have little to no formal experience with the arts.

During my first three years with the district, I restarted the Southeast Campus’s
art metals classes after their two-year absence from that campus. Open to
students regardless of art experience, I successfully ran the courses every long
semester with classes that filled and often had enrollment wait lists. A number of
students won awards for their work, had work featured in magazines, or started
small businesses.

Course Description: 3 hours. Films, lectures, slides, and discussions focus on the
theoretical, cultural, and historical aspects of the visual arts. Emphasis is on the
development of visual and aesthetic awareness.
Similarly to how I taught this course at TCC, I taught the course in a variety of
formats over time from traditional 3-day-per-week lectures to hybrid/blended
half-online sections with numerous field trips to musuems and galleries to
technology-intensive real-time research-based collaborative endeavors in a
computer classroom. Whether in-person or online visits to cultural institutions,
students produced scholarly and creative works, such as ekphrastic responses

RESEARCH STATEMENT
Through the theoretical lenses of Judith Butler’s performativity and Julia

Serano’s oppositional sexism, my research centers around three interrelated
areas of inquiry: art and visual studies education, feminist/transgender studies,
and emergent digital technologies. My dissertation study is a post-qualitative
inquiry centered on LGBQ and transgender issues and concerns and how
emergent digital technologies such as social media platforms, video/photo
sharing websites, virtual reality forums, and gaming can be used to promote
learning about gender variant identities and creating an environment that
promotes self-esteem, student success, and affirming LGBTQ pedagogy and
allyship.
I extend my dissertation research on social media and LGBQ and transgender

studies in “Jumping the Gun: Uncritical Trans Ally Artivism Post-HB2” in Visual
Culture & Gender, “Ontology of the Pee-Cock Gen2 3-in-1,” an article in a
special issue of the International Journal of Education Through Art co-edited by
Adetty Pérez de Miles and Nadine Kalin, “Vagina Dialogues: Un/Mediated, Un/
Censored,” a book chapter in press for publication in Women’s Caucus Lobby
Activism: Feminism + Art (NAEA), co-edited by Karen Keifer-Boyd, Linda Hoeptner
Poling, Sherri Klein, Wanda Knight, & Adetty Pérez de Miles, “Which Way Did
He Go, George?: A Phenomenology of Public Bathroom Use,” a book chapter
published in 2017 in Pedagogies in the Flesh: Case Studies on the Embodiment

research at the International Congress for Qualitative Inquiry (IQCI) in Urbana
Champaign-Illinois, the International Society for Education through Art (InSEA)
Congress in Helsinki, Finland, the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA)
Conference in Montreal, Canada, and I co-presented a Super Session, Trans Ally
101: Supporting Change for Student Success, with my dissertation advisor at the
2017 National Art Education Association (NAEA) Convention in New York.
My future research agenda includes further investigating possibilities conceived

through post-qualitative modes of inquiry in which the blurring of binary
demarcations and living in tensions are generative of new ways of knowing and
being. I am interested in what the blended spaces of online/offline, real/virtual,
and traditional/emergent as experienced through various digital technologies tell
us about the needs and desires of those who create and exist within and through
them and how art education might address these needs and desires.

to breakfast meeting with Dr. Amy Kraehe. Keifer-Boyd’s public lecture was organized
and moderated by Dr. Pérez de Miles. Assisted with technology needs for Keifer-
Boyd’s presentations at UNT. I organized the GSAEA morning breakfast meeting with

Week Event co-chaired by Drs. Lewis and Pérez de Miles, which included tours of

Compass Creative Arts Magazine Cooperative at Tarrant County College, Southeast
