Endangered animals

The animal kingdom is enormous and we do not know for certain how many species
there are in the world. Million species of animal have been named and described by
scientists It is known that there are about twice as many animals in tropical
rainforests than in any other habitat, and it is here that there are likely to be countless
numbers of species yet unknown to science.
Endangered means to be under threat or near extinction. When a animal is
endangered it means that they are disappearing fast or have a very small population
- not large enough to survive. Extinction means the end of existence for a species
Extinction is a natural process. Scientists estimate that up to 98% of all the species
that have ever lived are now extinct. Most of these became extinct before the
arrival.of humans over a period of hundreds of millions of years. A typical species
used to become extinct within 10 million years of its first appearance However the
species loss is occurring at a rate 1,000 times greater than the natural background
rate. The human expansion, hunting, and the destruction of natural habitats, climate
changes, pollution and other factors have caused an incredible number of animals
to become extinct. Some scientists estimate that up to half of presently existing plant
and animal species may become extinct by 2100. humans have an ethical obligation
to protect other species, that diversity and natural beauty are highly prized by
mankind, and that biodiversity is a vital resource.
People all over the world are working to help save endangered animals from
extinction. Some of the ways in which they are being saved include habitat
protection, captive breeding, setting up nature reserves and parks and using
alternative products in place of products from rare animals.
Some endangered Animals Our Next Generation Might Not See
The Yangtze softshell turtle is an extremely rare species of turtle that used to be
found in Vietnam and China. Holding the title for being the largest freshwater turtle
in the world, The struggle of this turtle for survival is the most intense and emotional
of all species.
The silky sifaka is another large lemur in Madagascar Its population is estimated to
range between 100 and 1,000 individuals, What makes their situation even worse
is the fact that no sifakas are kept in captivity.
