
On the Shoulders of Giants:

Qualitative Research
& Social Work’s Intellectual History

Topics:

We are seeking research that has one or more of the following characteristics:


Emancipatory: based on values of social justice & seeks to bring about social change
Phenomenological: seeks to understand research participants’ points of view


Shows immersion: based upon in-depth interviews, observations, and/or document analysis
Researcher reflexivity: Shows how researchers’ personal and professional experience may influence
research processes & how research processes may influence researchers


Ecological: takes into account the influences of multiple influences on research participants
Flexible methods: grounded theory, analytic induction, deductive qualitative analysis, life histories,
narrative analysis, multiple methods, and others


Historical: Discusses social work’s intellectual history and its relevance for today
Innovative: uses participatory action research, performance ethnography, poetry, art, music, songs,
photovoice, adaptation of interventions to new populations, change process research, logic models, task

analysis, among others
Practical outcomes: descriptive research, assessments, interventions, process & outcome evaluations,


performances, model development, theory testing & development, & more


