Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Poverty is now viewed as a major problem of a country in terms of their

economic growth. Poverty has come into the world as an unsolvable problem

leaving some countries problematic about their countrymen who has been

depending on the free stuff they get from the government. Generally, it is caused

by the family status and attainment. However, nowadays, it is caused by lack of

motivation.

A champion needs a motivation above and beyond winning (Pat Riley). It

says in this quote that in order to defeat all odd, to come across all obstacles we

need motivation just like the water that we need every day. In everything we do,

we need to have motivation in order to give our very best. Even the old, the

young and middle age needs motivation. Students on the other hand, need the

most motivation to pass their subjects and to ace their tests.

More and more students have been losing their motivation lately. The

researchers think that lack of confidence, fear of criticism, procrastination, stress,

peers, and lifestyle are some factors that can affect the motivation of a person.

The researchers have thought of it as one international problem of parents

among their child.

In the Philippines, a lot of the businessmen’s child may have the least

motivation, also because they have less authority to choose their future careers,
given that their parents have already assigned them to take over the business.

These are some reasons affecting the motivation of some students.

Some first year student and second year are very motivated because they

are excited to attend their first class in high school and meet new friends.

Commonly, third and fourth year have the least honors, maybe because they are

weary already of the lesson and the time they are spending in school. Due to the

repeated lessons students fail to give their full attention to the teacher or even to

the lesson.

As researchers we would like to conduct a study to know how many

students in NDDU-IBED have motivation, and to find out those common

motivations they have. We would give out survey forms to third year and fourth

year students and get the ratio of their motivation..

In this study we will know how important is the motivation and how many

students are motivated.

Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to determine the third year and the fourth year students’

motivation in learning the academic subjects.

Specifically, it did the following

1. Identified the different possible motivations of students in their

academic subjects

2. Determined the rate of how motivated the students of NDDU-IBED are

Scope and Delimitation

This study was delimited in determining the different motivations of the

third year and the fourth year students’ of NDDU-IBED towards the five major

academic subjects: Mathematics, Science, Filipino, English and Araling

Panlipunan. The determining of the motivations was based on the survey made

by the researchers. The respondents for the survey were 100 students from the

3rd and 4th year levels in high school in NDDU-IBED Lagao. Some of the possible

motivations that were assessed were: family, peers, financial status, and goals

and ambitions.

The researcher-made questionnaires were used as data gathering

instruments. Weighted mean was applied by the researchers in determining the

different motivations.

Significance of the Study

The implication of this study was to determine the different motivations

that the students of NDDU-IBED Lagao had in learning the academic subjects.

After conducting this study, it would help students know how important

motivations are in their life in setting their goals. This would also help teachers

and parents in guiding students into making decisions. Through this study, the

researchers hope for a positive effect on the students’ decision-making. And to

help them to be more determined in their studies in order to become successful.

This would also give them ideas about the factors affecting the performance of
the students towards their studies and to know if they really prioritize their studies

in school.

Definition of Terms

There are some terms in this study which may have other meanings, and

in order to prevent misinterpretation for the readers, the researchers defined

those terms either conceptually or operationally.
