About MicroSorb
Environmental Products, Inc.

What is MicroSorb Environmental Products, Inc.?

MicroSorb Environmental Products, Inc. was incorporated in 1996 to market a superior blend of naturally
occurring, non hazardous, nonpathogenic microbes and microbe “enhancers” that are utilized to break down
a wide assortment of organic materials. These materials include petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated com-
pounds, and animal and vegetable wastes (fats, oils, and grease).

In order for MicroSorb microbes to live, multiply, and attack organic wastes, they must have available: water,
reasonable temperatures (290F - 1300F), and oxygen. The “enhancers” mentioned above are various products
provided by MicroSorb products, which help our microbes access and utilize oxygen and water.

Advantages of MicroSorb Environmental Products

MicroSorb products are highly concentrated numbers of microbes housed in a bentonite clay matrix. Some of
these products have as many as 100 billion microbes per gram – more than any other currently known
microbial product. This allows for lower volumes of product to treat areas where the competition must
provide large doses of product with inferior microbial counts. In addition, MicroSorb microbial products
have a broad variety of microbial species – capable of dealing with and destroying a large variety of contami-
nants.

MicroSorb products also have a long shelf life – up to five years. This permits easy shipment and lower costs
compared to competitive products that often are in liquid form with limited shelf life and that often cost
hundreds of dollars to ship.

MicroSorb Product Applications

The release to the environment of petroleum hydrocarbons and other organic wastes can require an expensive
cleanup effort. In the past, most solutions called for digging out or pumping and treating contaminated media
at huge costs to the owner. With most governmental regulations, the burden of clean up falls on the land-
owner. This means that not only are industry and commercial property owners impacted, but residential
properties and individuals as well. The use of microbes for treating contamination in place (in situ) at consid-
erably lower costs therefore should be carefully considered in most contaminated site clean-up efforts.

What types of contamination can be treated with MicroSorb Environmental Products?

MicroSorb® ER (Emergency Response)

For oil and chemical surface spill treatment

HOW IT WORKS
MicroSorb® ER is a consortium of over 140 billion hydrocarbon digesting microbes per ounce contained in a
bentonite clay carrier. The bentonite absorbs the spill and the microbes bioremediate the spill when water is
added. MicroSorb® ER may be used to attack any petroleum based liquids (i.e. gasoline, fuel oil, hydrocar-
bon solvents) and virtually any hydrocarbon or oxygenated hydrocarbon. As in all MicroSorb microbial
products, water and oxygen must be present to allow the microbes to break down oils into carbon dioxide,
water, and soluble fatty acids. Fatty acids are a water soluble food for fish and plants.

APPLICATIONS
MicroSorb® ER is utilized to:
1) Contain (absorb) and treat sudden surface spills or low level historical releases (weeping) on natural
surfaces (i.e. soil).
2) Treat oily buildup or sudden spills on concrete or other man-made surfaces to eliminate oil and oil odors,
reduce slippery conditions, or for repainting surfaces. (See projects D-1 and D-2)
3) Treat oily sheens on surface water.
4) Initially treat open contaminated trenches, pits, or excavations for “on the spot” cost effective
remediation.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

For spills on soils, loosen the soils with a rake. Spread MicroSorb® ER on the contaminated soil. Use one to
two pounds of MicroSorb® ER per 100 square feet. Apply water and keep the soils wet. Should the soils
become dry, the degradation will cease, however, the microbes will become active when more water is
applied. If a spill has penetrated the ground more than 18 inches, there is not enough oxygen in the soils to
support aerobic bioremediation. The soils must be cultivated to ensure bioremediation will completely
destroy the spill.

MICROSORB ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCTS, INC. 781 878 0440

MicroSorb® IS (Industrial Strength)

A powerful microbial consortium which reduces organic matter

HOW IT WORKS
MicroSorb® IS is a consortium of over 560 billion hydrocarbon digesting microbes per ounce contained in a
bentonite clay carrier. It may be used to attack any petroleum based liquids (i.e. gasoline, fuel oil, hydrocar-
bon solvents, organic wastes) and virtually any hydrocarbon or oxygenated hydrocarbon. As in all MicroSorb
microbial products, water and oxygen must be present to allow the microbes to break down oils into carbon
dioxide, water, and soluble fatty acids. MicroSorb® IS contains a greater number of microbes per volume
than MicroSorb® ER and therefore has the capability to attack hydrocarbons, oils, and grease more quickly
than MicroSorb® ER when clean-up time or organic waste reduction is a significant factor.

APPLICATIONS
MicroSorb® IS is utilized:
1) In the treatment of poultry grow-out houses for reduced odor, reduced wastes, and healthier, quicker
grow-out conditions. (See project F-1)
2) For the more rapid cleanup of surface releases (versus MicroSorb® ER) when time is of the essence.
3) In the treatment of septic tanks and leaching fields. MicroSorb® IS helps reduce organic waste buildup in
the tank and helps prevent grease and other fouling agents from entering the leaching field. (See project
E-2)
4) In the treatment of surface water spills to contain and break down floating hydrocarbons.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

MicroSorb® IS is a competitively priced, powerful blend of microbes at a concentration many times greater
than any similarly priced microbial product. Typically 1/3 the amount of MicroSorb® IS is required to that of
any competitive bioremediation product. MicroSorb® IS is adapted to breaking down organic wastes and
grease buildup in treatment works without transferring the problem “downstream.”

MICROSORB ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCTS, INC. 781 878 0440

MicroSorb® SC (Super Concentrate)

An extra strength microbial consortium used in oxygen-limiting environments

HOW IT WORKS
MicroSorb® SC is a consortium of over 21/2 trillion hydrocarbon digesting microbes per ounce contained in
a bentonite clay carrier. MicroSorb® SC may be used to attack any petroleum based liquids (i.e. gasoline, fuel
oil, hydrocarbon solvents, organic wastes) and virtually any hydrocarbon or oxygenated hydrocarbon. As in
all MicroSorb microbial products, water and oxygen must be present to allow the microbes to break down oils
into carbon dioxide, water, and soluble fatty acids. However, MicroSorb® SC, because of its high microbe
content and when used with MicroSorb® Biocatalyst, has the ability to attack hydrocarbons in oxygen limited
environments (e.g. below grade and in groundwater). As such, it augments natural biodegradation and signifi-
cantly assists existing microbes in breaking down the contaminant.

APPLICATIONS
MicroSorb® SC is utilized:
1) For subsurface in situ soil and/or groundwater contamination treatment through subsurface bio-injection
well applications, through subsurface leaching galleries, or through injection and recovery trench applica-
tions. The above applications are ideal for treating poor access areas (e.g. under basement floors, wetland
areas, etc.) where destruction of property or natural resources used to be the only option. MicroSorb® SC
is also ideal for treating contamination near building foundations, tanks, or utilities where contamination
removal may damage structures. (See projects A-1 through A-9)
2) For treating stockpiled (ex situ) contaminated soil. (See projects B-1 and B-2)
3) For direct application to septic systems and grease traps to lower solids buildup, reduce odors, and break
down fats, oil, and grease. (See project E-1)
4) In sewerage lift stations, piping, and wastewater treatment plants to reduce odors, limit corrosion, and
lower solids disposal costs. (See projects C-1 and C-4)
5) In manure treatment (chickens, hogs, and cattle) to reduce solids, eliminate odors, and improve livestock
health and grow-out.

6
MICROSORB ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCTS, INC. 781 878 0440

MicroSorb® DC (De-Chlorinator Product)

Designed to break down chlorinated solvents

HOW IT WORKS
MicroSorb® DC is a consortium of over 21/2 trillion hydrocarbon digesting microbes per ounce contained in
a bentonite clay carrier. MicroSorb® DC contains microbes specifically designed to breakdown chlorinated
hydrocarbons. As in all MicroSorb microbial products, water and oxygen must be present to allow the
microbes to break down the chlorinated hydrocarbons to water, carbon dioxide, and free chlorine.
MicroSorb® DC, because of its high microbe content, and when used with MicroSorb® Biocatalyst, has the
ability to attack hydrocarbons in oxygen limited environments (e.g. below grade and in groundwater). As
such, it augments natural biodegradation and significantly assists existing microbes in breaking down the
contaminant.

APPLICATIONS
MicroSorb® DC is utilized for subsurface in-situ soil and/or groundwater contamination treatment through
subsurface bio-injection well applications, through subsurface leaching galleries, or through injection and
recovery trench applications. (See project A-7)

7
MICROSORB ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCTS, INC. 781 878 0440

MicroSorb® Biocatalyst
An oxygen enriching water that is mixed with microbes and applied in oxygen limiting
environments to break down hydrocarbons

HOW IT WORKS
MicroSorb® Biocatalyst is processed from naturally occurring organic materials. It is oxygen enriched water
with enzymes, which is mixed with microbes to attack hydrocarbon contamination in oxygen deficient conditions
(i.e. subsurface soil and groundwater). Microbial activity is frequently limited by insufficient oxygen due to low
rates of oxygen and carbon dioxide diffusion in subsurface soils. MicroSorb® Biocatalyst helps reduce this
limiting factor. The greater the mass of oxygen available, the more rapid the clean-up.

APPLICATIONS
MicroSorb® Biocatalyst is used:
1) For subsurface in-situ soil and/or groundwater contamination treatment through: subsurface bio-injection
well applications, subsurface leaching galleries, or through injection and recovery trench applications.
(See projects A-1 through A-9)
2) For increased plant growth.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

MicroSorb® Biocatalyst is processed from naturally occurring materials; it is nontoxic, nonpathogenic, and
nonflammable. MicroSorb® Biocatalyst increases microbe performance dramatically in the absence of free
oxygen and it also increases microbe tolerances in salt-damaged soils.

MicroSorb OW (Oxygenated Water)

A hydrated nitrogen liquid that destroys organic wastes and eliminates odors and grease

HOW IT WORKS
MicroSorb Oxygenated Water is a liquid chemical containing hydrated nitrogen and trace minerals. The
hydrated nitrogen molecule provides an extremely high amount of oxygen. MicroSorb® OW combined with
MicroSorb microbes will destroy organic wastes without the addition of air. MicroSorb® OW is normally
used with MicroSorb microbes to break down the contaminant.

APPLICATIONS
MicroSorb® OW is used to:
1) Treat contaminated water and coated surfaces where the addition of air is not practical – such as catch
basins, utility manholes, oil/water separators, waste collection systems and lagoons.
2) Destroy organic wastes and reduce odors in wastewater collection systems, manholes, catch basins, lift
stations, and treatment works. (See projects C-1 and C-4)
3) Eliminate odors at landfills, transfer stations, kennels, latrines, dumpsters, grease pits, or any place
organic odors present a nuisance.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

Use MicroSorb® OW in concert with MicroSorb microbes to treat contaminated water. One pound of
MicroSorb® ER and one gallon of MicroSorb® OW will treat 1,000 gallons of water. If the surface area of
contaminated water is small (such as a manhole), apply an ounce or two of MicroSorb® ER and OW to begin
the hydrocarbon/organic waste degradation process.

Apply MicroSorb® OW and MicroSorb® ER, MicroSorb® IS, or MicroSorb® SC to wastewater collection
systems to reduce odors, and begin the destruction of organic waste. It is suggested that two gallons of
MicroSorb® OW and one pound of MicroSorb® SC be added to one million gallons of sewage. Odors will be
eliminated in hours. Grease will be eliminated within days.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

Specific inorganic compounds have been selected for optimal use by MicroSorb microbes. Inorganic nutrients
and trace elements are essential for all forms of life. Most soil remediation projects require a 20% ratio of
nutrients to a pound of microbes. The substitution of common fertilizers used in gardening is not appropriate
for bioremediation as some compounds often interfere with microbial degradation.

MicroBlue®
An emulsifier used with microbes (on surfaces or soils) to break up the contaminant

HOW IT WORKS
MicroBlue® is a biodegradable liquid cleaner designed to work on its own or with MicroSorb® ER.
MicroBlue® is a non-contact food grade surfactant that emulsifies the hydrocarbon contaminant thus increas-
ing surface area for the microbes to attack. It is nonflammable and can be used to clean any hard surface or
soil media.

APPLICATIONS
MicroBlue® is used to:
1) Clean oil or grease-laden parts and equipment.
2) Clean sludge pits, tank bottoms, concrete surfaces, separators, other man-made surfaces, and grease traps.
(See project D-1)
3) Emulsify heavy oils in soil and reduce the hydrocarbons to water, carbon dioxide, and fatty acid.
4) Clean oil-soaked clothes and absorbents.
5) Clean filters, floors and other surfaces in restaurants where fats, oils, and grease accumulate.
6) Break down floating fats, oils, and greases in lift stations and sewage treatment plants.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

MicroBlue® emulsifies the hydrocarbon, thus increasing the surface area of the oil/water interface. The
microbes, which live in water, are therefore presented with a greater hydrocarbon surface area providing more
sites for microbial digestion.

To use MicroBlue®, add one teaspoon of MicroSorb® ER to a gallon of MicroBlue®, shake and let stand for
30 minutes. Shake again and spray the activated MicroBlue® onto the contaminated surface. Agitate the
surface with a stiff broom or brush. The MicroSorb® ER microbes penetrate the pore space of the structure
biodegrading the hydrocarbon contamination. Add a little more water and broom the surface again. After 15
minutes, flush with water. Activated MicroBlue® can also be used with power washing equipment.

Inject MicroBlue® into soils contaminated with heavy hydrocarbons such as #4 or #6 fuel oils. MicroBlue®
will emulsify the heavy oils providing enhance bioremediation. The microbes in MicroSorb digest the hydro-
carbon molecules and the MicroBlue® molecules.

Re: MicroSorb

Dear Mr. Baird:

The Bureau of Petroleum Storage Systems hereby accepts the following

MicroSorb products for both in situ and ex situ bioremediation of
contaminated sites in Florida:

MicroSorb Super Concentrate (SC);

MicroSorb Biocatalyst;
MicroSorb Nutrient;
MicroSorb Emergency Response (ER);
MicroSorb De-Chlorinator Product (DC); and
MicroSorb Industrial Strength (IS).

Acceptance is for these six specific products, for applications within the
jurisdiction of this bureau, which is generally the remediation of
petroleum in subsurface soil and groundwater. There may be other uses for
them in emergency response, surface cleaning, and the remediation of
chlorinated organic hydrocarbons and other suitable compounds. This is
not, however, an acceptance for the complete current line of MicroSorb
products, future MicroSorb products, or any MicroSorb products for which
this bureau has not yet received a complete chemical analysis.

MicroSorb ER, MicroSorb IS, MicroSorb SC, and MicroSorb DC products contain
varying concentrations of non-pathogenic, naturally occurring,
microorganisms which have been dehydrated and mixed with an inert
preparation of natural clay. The microorganisms are cultivated in seawater
with ammonia as the only nitrogen source and crude oil as the only source
of carbon.

Per chemical analysis shown in enclosure 1, the MicroSorb Biocatalyst is a

proprietary liquid of grass extracts and oxygen-enriching water that is
used to supply the microbes with oxygen. MicroSorb Nutrient is a blended
fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur, and trace
nutrients. The bureau has no objection to the use of MicroSorb Nutrient
for injection-type aquifer remediation projects provided that this
material, which is shipped in dry form, is mixed with sufficient clean
water to comply with the underground injection control requirements of

Chapter 62-528, Florida Administrative Code. If a Remedial Action Plan

proposes the use of a MicroSorb nutrient/water ratio that does not meet the
injection control requirements, then it will be necessary to obtain a
variance for a temporary zone of discharge before the mixture is injected.

MicroSorb products augment the bioremediation of contaminants by the

application of a mixture of microbes, nutrients, and the biocatalyst. The
rapid biodegradation of pollutants is achieved through the injection of a
varied species of microbes in high densities; for example, MicroSorb ER
contains 5 billion microbes per gram, MiroSorb IS contains 20 billion
microbes per gram, and MicroSorb SC contains 90 billion microbes per gram.

The in situ application of the MicroSorb mixture can take two forms. In
the first form, if free product is present or soils in the vadose zone are
contaminated, then an interceptor trench or series of recovery wells are
installed. Contaminated water from them is then pumped to a bioreactor
tank, the mixture is introduced, any free product is removed, and the
treated fluid in the bioreactor drains back into the source area through
leaching trenches or pits. The second form of application involves
injecting the mixture of MicroSorb microbes, nutrients, and biocatalyst
into a series of injection wells. This application is effective for the
treatment of dissolved contamination. This MicroSorb mixture works by
biochemically, removing a carbon atom from the hydrocarbon and replacing it
with two oxygen atoms to form a water-soluble fatty acid. The ultimate
degradation products of hydrocarbon contaminants are carbon dioxide and
water, and in the case of chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminants, chloride
ions as well.

For in situ vadose remediation, when the underlying groundwater will not be
affected by the leaching of this product, there are no special concerns
beyond those which would normally need to be addressed in preparing a
Remedial Action Plan and conducting a cleanup in accordance with the
petroleum cleanup requirements of Chapter 62-770, Florida Administrative
Code (F.A.C.). For ex situ groundwater treatment, when an aboveground
treatment system produces effluent meeting the petroleum cleanup criteria
referenced by Chapter 62-770, F.A.C., and the drinking water standards of
Chapter 62-550, F.A.C., for disposal via recharge gallery or NPDES permit,
there are no special concerns. But for in situ groundwater remediation via
injection of the product into an aquifer, there are underground injection
control (UIC) regulations that must be observed. Since in situ aquifer
remediation via injection is likely to be the most common application of
this product, the bulk of the regulatory requirements discussed in
enclosure 2 will be directed to that topic.

The bureau recognizes the above-referenced MicroSorb products as a viable

means for the bioremediation of petroleum contaminated sites in Florida.
There are no objections to their use provided: (a) the considerations of
this letter are taken into account; and (b) a Remedial Action Plan is
approved by the Department.

While the Department of Environmental Protection does not provide

endorsement of specific or brand name remediation products or processes, it
does recognize the need to determine their acceptability from an

and the interests of public health, safety, and welfare. Vendors must then
market the products and processes on their own merits regarding
performance, cost, and safety in comparison to competing alternatives in
the marketplace. In no way, however, shall this letter regarding
regulatory acceptance (or the conditions of regulatory acceptance) be
construed as certification of product or process performance.

Preparers of Remedial Action Plans are advised to include a copy of this

letter in the appendix of plans they submit, and call attention to it in
the text of their document. In this way, technical reviewers throughout
the state will be informed that you have contacted the Department of
Environmental Protection in regard to MicroSorb products. To aid those
reviewers, the Bureau of Petroleum Storage Systems provides supplemental
information as enclosure 3.

The Department reserves the right to revoke acceptance of any product or

process if the nature or composition of either its ingredients or
performance has been falsely represented. Additionally, Department
acceptance of any product or process does not imply it has been deemed
applicable for all cleanup situations, or that it is preferred over other
treatment or cleanup techniques in any particular case. A site-specific
evaluation of applicability and cost-effectiveness must be considered for
any product or process, whether conventional or innovative, and adequate
site-specific design details must be provided in Remedial Action Plans
prescribing the product or process. Technical questions regarding
acceptance of the MicroSorb products described in this letter may be
directed to Ms. Donna Cline, P.E., at telephone 850/222-6446.

In Situ Sub-Surface Soil and Groundwater Treatment

Laboratory, Watertown, MA
PROBLEM: Lagoons, manholes, and soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons
SOLUTION & RESULTS: see letter below

WATERTOWN LABORATORY

BOSTON EDISON COMPANY

Telephone (617) 369-6737 Fax (617) 369-6800
Boston Edison Company has used a full range of MicroSorb® Oil Treatment products at
various facilities over the last few years. The products have provided successful treatment
of lagoons, manholes and soils that have been contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons,
mainly mineral oil dielectric fluid (MODF). There has been a tremendous cost benefit to
the use of the treatment products as opposed to the dig and dispose methods.

The most recent examples of the effectiveness of the products are illustrated by the follow-
ing two case studies. The first illustration involved a suburban electrical substation that
was contaminated with historic spills of MODF from utility operations. The addition of
MicroSorb® Superconcentrate (100 billion microbes per gram) and Biocatalyst with the
proper nutrients and water provided a decrease in the amount of petroleum hydrocarbons
present in the soil (as measured by the MADEPEPH method) from a total of nearly 100,000
mg/kg down to a total of less than 100 mg/kg from the four sampling points used to deter-
mine the contamination level.

The second illustration of the effectiveness is at an old power generation site that had
groundwater monitoring wells grossly contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons present
as a Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (NAPL). The addition of MicroSorb® Superconcentrate
(100 billion microbes per gram) and Biocatalyst over a period of a few months removed
the NAPL from the groundwater and has allowed construction activities to proceed with-
out any interruption due to environmental concerns.

The Boston Edison Company does not endorse any product but Standard Operating Proce-
dures across the company now incorporate the use MicroSorb® Oil Treatment products.
We expect that the product line will provide increased environmental benefits with signifi-
cant cost savings.

PROJECT A-2

In Situ Sub-Surface Soil and Groundwater Treatment

Gasoline Station, Brockton, MA

PROBLEM
High concentration of volatile organics and MTBE in soils
At an oil company in Brockton, MA, three underground storage tanks (kerosene and gasoline) were removed
in June 1997 as part of the required upgrading program of the state and federal governments. During the
removal process, screening of soils indicated total organic vapor concentrations in excess of 1,000 ppm in
some of the soils. This triggered a reportable condition as part of the Massachusetts Contingency Plan.
Sidewall samples of the tank excavation indicated that the highest concentrations of organic vapors were
located in the east sidewall. Further excavation of these soils was precluded due to the presence of a 7,200-
gallon diesel fuel tank just beyond the east sidewall. An estimated 80 cubic yards of soil were excavated as
part of the tank removal process.

Prior to backfilling, soil samples for laboratory analysis were collected from the four sidewalls of the excava-
tion. Each sample was tested for volatile organic compounds by EPA Method 8020 and for petroleum hydro-
carbons (TPH) using the hydrocarbon fingerprinting method (GC/FID). The analytical results are presented
below with their respective reportable concentrations (RCS-2):

The laboratory results confirm the headspace readings with the east wall showing significant levels of con-
tamination. However, previous assessment activities (monitoring well installations) around the former tank
location area indicated that the extent of the east wall contamination was limited. Groundwater sampling from
these monitoring wells did identify up to 50,000 ppb of MTBE in the groundwater.

SOLUTION
Bio treatment program with MicroSorb® Microbes, Nutrients, Biocatalyst
Because the soils could not be removed due to neighboring tanks, an in situ bioremediation program was
begun as the best remedial alternative. After the underground storage tanks were removed from the excava-
tion, the contaminated stockpiled soil was treated with MicroSorb products (Microbes, Nutrients, and
Biocatalyst) and returned to the tank excavation as temporary back fill. Also, the native soils near the east
wall of the excavation were inoculated with MicroSorb products with a hand auger.
RESULTS
MicroSorb products reduce contaminant levels of soils to well within clean-up standards
Two months after treatment (August 1997) as part of the new tank installation, samples were obtained from
the re-excavated soil and the results indicated non-detect conditions for volatile organic compounds (includ-
ing MTBE). In October 1997, soil samples were obtained from the area of the east wall by hand auger. The
results indicated a significant reduction in the contaminant levels (MTBE was non-detect), well within clean-
up standards for S1 soils (see table below).

Groundwater sampling (October 1997) from the wells in the vicinity of the tank excavation indicated levels of
volatile organic compounds (including MTBE) to be within clean-up standards as well – although MTBE was
at the upper limit (50,000 ppb), indicating that a small release from the former gasoline tank may have
occurred. However, within one year (November 1998) MTBE levels dropped to 5,000 and other volatile
organic compounds were significantly reduced (see table below).

PROJECT A-3

In Situ Sub-Surface Soil and Groundwater Treatment

Junior High School, Norwell, MA

PROBLEM
Soil under boiler room floor is saturated with oil
On July 3, 1997, oil was discovered leaking from a gauge in front of the boiler at the Henry Goldman School
in Norwell, Massachusetts. The oil had leaked through the floor around the foundation of the boiler. When a
sump pump failed during a heavy rainstorm, oil floated up through the floor, covering the floor with oil. It
was determined that oil had saturated the soil under the boiler room floor.

SOLUTION
Use MicroSorb® SC and MicroSorb® ER to clean up concrete, spill, contaminated soil and water
The town hired an environmental consultant who used only $300 of MicroSorb® SC (Super Concentrate) and
MicroSorb® ER (Emergency Response) to clean up the concrete, the spill, and the contaminated soil and
groundwater! Although the treated water met discharge permit requirements, the water was drained through
the two small carbon drums and discharged to a swamp.

The biotreatment system was set up and operational in two days. The discharge from the sump pump was
connected to a temporary above-ground tank using flexible hose. When the tank was full, oil was floating on
the surface of the water. Three pounds of MicroSorb® SC (Super Concentrate), which contains 142 billion
oil-eating microbes per ounce, was added to the tank. Air from the boiler room air compressor was also piped
into the bottom of the tank.

RESULTS
Save town $150,000; school opens on schedule
In two days the free product was bioremediated. The average concentration of petroleum in the water in the
tank prior to treatment was 750 ppm. The average concentration of petroleum in the water after treatment
was 4ppm. The treated water was circulated under the floor of the boiler room and the contaminated soil and
groundwater were bioremediated in six months without excavation. The school was opened as scheduled in
September! The town of Norwell estimated that they saved $150,000 using bioremediation instead of remov-
ing the concrete floor and excavating the contaminated site.

PROJECT A-4

In Situ Sub-Surface Soil and Groundwater Treatment

Automobile Dealership, Danvers, MA

PROBLEM
Hydrocarbon contaminated soils and groundwater present after underground storage tank
removal
A release of petroleum hydrocarbons to the environment was discovered upon the removal of four under-
ground storage tanks (two gasoline and two waste oil) at a car dealership. During the removal process, total
organic vapor readings exceeded 100 ppm, thus triggering the 72-hour notification requirement according to
the clean-up regulations in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts DEP gave authorization to conduct an Immedi-
ate Response Action (IRA) for the site. Upon removal of the tanks, visible holes were identified in all of
them. Also, soil samples taken from each of the tank excavations indicated petroleum hydrocarbons in excess
of reportable concentrations.

SOLUTION
In situ application of MicroSorb® SC and MicroSorb® Biocatalyst
To determine the extent of the release, four monitoring wells were installed in and around (both upgradient
and downgradient) the excavations. (Little or no contamination was found in the soils or groundwater at
these locations.) Because of the number of buried utilities in the area, additional soil removal from the
former tank locations was not a viable solution to the contamination problem. The in situ application of
MicroSorb microbial products was determined to be the most cost effective and timely solution as a remedial
IRA. An infiltration system of slotted pipe was installed at the top of the contaminated zone in both former
tank excavations. At grade, a 1,000-gallon bioreactor tank was set up and supplied with 20 pounds of
MicroSorb® SC (Super Concentrate), MicroSorb® Nutrients, water, and 220 gallons of MicroSorb® Biocata-
lyst. The bioreactor discharged to the injection piping bathing the contaminated areas with microbes, nutri-
ents, and biocatalyst (source of oxygen). This liquid stream was collected downgradient at the groundwater
table by means of a recovery well that would then pump the recovered (treated) groundwater back into the
bioreactor tank for recirculation to the injection trenches. A second application of microbes, nutrient, and
biocatalyst was applied after 30 days.

RESULTS
After three months, non-detect levels of EPH, VPH, and targeted VOCs
After three months of operation, groundwater was sampled from the system with non-detect levels of EPH,
VPH, and targeted VOCs. Confirmatory drilling indicated all groundwater samples and soil samples (except
one minor EPH aliphatic soil sample violation) met risk characterization standards for closure. A Class A-2
Response Action Outcome (closure) was submitted for the site.

PROJECT A-5

In Situ Sub-Surface Soil and Groundwater Treatment

University, Boston, MA

PROBLEM
Hydrocarbon contaminated soils around underground storage tank
A historical release of petroleum hydrocarbons (fuel oil) was discovered around a 10,000 gallon capacity
underground storage tank (UST) located between a building and a sidewalk at a major university in Boston.
Initial response actions performed at the site included removal of two USTs, and excavation and removal of
contaminated soil. However, excavation activities were terminated due to structural concerns for the adjacent
building and sidewalk, as well as safety concerns for the university population and general public. The
excavation was back filled following installation of a replacement UST. Results of a follow-up subsurface
investigation indicated that a significant amount of contaminated soil remained in the (groundwater) saturated
zone at depths between 12 and 20 feet. Concentrations of Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbon (EPH) frac-
tions exceeded Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) risk characterization (cleanup) standards. The highest
EPH concentrations in the soil were between 2,300 ppm and 3,540 ppm. EPH fractions were not detected in
the groundwater.

SOLUTION
In situ bioremediation to reduce petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations
In situ bioremediation was the selected response action utilized to reduce the petroleum hydrocarbon concen-
trations. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) approved the Release
Abatement Measure (RAM) Plan for the in situ bioremediation. Seven bioinjection wells were strategically
installed within the area of concern, and a blend of MicroSorb® SC (Super Concentrate), MicroSorb®
Nutrients, and MicroSorb® Biocatalyst were introduced into the subsurface via low pressure injection
pumping through the bioinjection wells.

RESULTS
Concentrations of hydrocarbons reduced to levels below applicable MCP risk characterization
standards
Groundwater monitoring performed in March, 1998, indicated that petroleum hydrocarbons were virtually
nondetected in the ground water. Confirmatory soil sampling nine months following initial injection of the
subsurface as well as analytical test data indicated that concentrations of EPH fractions in the soils had been
reduced between 90 -98%. Average EPH concentration was well below risk characterization (cleanup)
standards. The results of the monitoring and confirmatory testing programs indicated that concentrations of
petroleum hydrocarbons in the subsurface (soil and groundwater) media had been successfully reduced to
levels below applicable MCP risk characterization standards. The Massachusetts DEP audited the site
remediation and concluded the remediation met all standards.

In Situ Sub-Surface

Trailer Park, Halifax, MA

PROBLEM
Kerosene release adjacent to and into a wetland

SOLUTION
Inject mixture of MicroSorb® SC, Nutrients, and Biocatalyst to treat wetlands soils and ground-
water, and extend treatment equipment life
A pump and treat system was designed to recover a release of kerosene in a trailer park adjacent to a wetland.
The system consisted of a pumping system which pumped total fluids (NAPL and groundwater) from seven
recovery wells. The majority of the NAPL was removed in two separator tanks, and the remainder was
removed via a coalescing oil/water separator. The effluent of the separator was processed through an acti-
vated carbon treatment system and discharged to the wetland under an EPA discharge permit. In February
1997, the wetlands soils and groundwater were treated by injecting a mixture of MicroSorb® SC (Super
Concentrate), Nutrients, and Biocatalyst into selected monitoring wells.

RESULTS
Complete recovery of the impacted wetlands has been documented
Since start-up of the system, over 40 million gallons of groundwater have been treated, and approximately
38,000 gallons of kerosene have been recovered. A complete recovery of the impacted wetlands has been
documented since start-up of the system. Between April 1997 and November 1997, the carbon drums were
only changed once. Also, significant changes were noted in the influent of the oil/water separator and carbon
treatment system since April 1997 (two months after biotreatment). The amount of biomass in the initial
separator tanks was greatly reduced. Of particular interest, the dissolved contaminant concentration in the
influent to the carbon treatment system was significantly reduced. Between April 1996 and April 1997 (prior
to biotreatment) the average concentration of total BTEX in the influent samples was 390 ppb and the average
concentration of TPH was 22.4 ppm. Between April 1997 and November 1997 (after biotreatment) the
average concentration of total BTEX was 113 ppb and the average concentration of TPH was 12.1 ppm.
These results represent a 71% reduction in total BTEX and a 45% reduction in TPH.

PROJECT A-7

In Situ Sub-Surface Soil and Groundwater Treatment

Machine Shop, Whitman, MA

PROBLEM
Groundwater contaminated by solvents; concentrations exceeded MA drinking water stan-
dards
At a machine shop groundwater was contaminated with perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, and other
industrial solvents. This was caused by a surface release of used industrial degreasers. Both overburden and
bedrock aquifers were impacted. Assessment of the site indicated that the two are in hydraulic continuity.
Eight years and over 5 million gallons of traditional pump and treat remediation had not reduced site contami-
nant concentrations to the Massachusetts drinking water standards.

SOLUTION
Inject MicroSorb® DC, MicroSorb® Nutrients, and MicroSorb® Biocatalyst into bedrock surface
In 1997, a program of in situ bioremediation was initiated. Thirty-two inoculation points were driven to the
bedrock surface and set with 1/2 inch diameter PVC well screen. The points were arranged in a grid pattern
from upgradient of the known extent of contamination to the property boundaries. MicroSorb®DC (De-
Chlorinator Product) was mixed with MicroSorb® Nutrients and MicroSorb® Biocatalyst and injected into
the points and impacted monitoring wells. Groundwater samples were collected prior to the first inoculation
in April, 1997. A second inoculation round was implemented in September, 1997. The goal was to achieve
PCE concentrations of 5 mg/L throughout the site.

RESULTS
PCE concentrations are reduced and continue to decline
PCE concentrations declined at an average rate of 50% each quarter. In the most contaminated area, concen-
trations were reduced from 120 to 28 mg/L in six months. In a less contaminated area, concentrations de-
clined from 77 to 11 mg/L. Site closure is anticipated within 12 to 18 months. The table (on the following
page) indicates PCE levels in three bedrock wells.

PROJECT A-8

In Situ Sub-Surface

Residence, Cohasset, MA

PROBLEM
Contaminated soils and groundwater during removal of UST
Oil contaminated soils and groundwater were initially observed at a residential property during the removal of
a 275 gallon UST. The dwelling was constructed on a concrete slab with a shallow footing. The UST was
located immediately adjacent to the footing. Excavation of the contaminated soils was limited because of the
risk of undermining the footing and the nearby septic system. Analysis of the residual contaminated soils in
the sidewalls of the excavation reported an average TPH level of 2,057 ppm with a groundwater sample
registering a TPH level of 880 ppm.

SOLUTION
In situ bioremediation with MicroSorb® SC, MicroSorb® Nutrients, and MicroSorb® Biocatalyst
Because residual contaminated soils were present beneath the dwelling and near the septic system, in situ
bioremediation was the best method to clean the site. A mixture of MicroSorb® SC, MicroSorb® Nutrients,
and MicroSorb® Biocatalyst was applied to the impacted area via a perforated pipe installed prior to backfill-
ing the excavation. Three one-inch diameter injection points were also installed with a hand auger.

RESULTS
No detectable levels of TPH in groundwater
The soils and groundwater were resampled four months after application. The results of these analyses
reported no detectable levels of TPH in the groundwater and an average TPH concentration in the soils of 118
ppm. These levels are well below the cleanup standards for residential properties. The cost of the
biotreatment, including MicroSorb® SC, MicroSorb® Nutrients, MicroSorb® Biocatalyst, and application of
the mixture was $1,420.

PROJECT A-9

In Situ Sub-Surface

Residence, Framingham, MA

PROBLEM
Fuel oil spill below concrete basement floor slab
A sudden release of 110 gallons of #2 fuel oil occurred during March 1997 when a copper fuel supply line
ruptured below a concrete basement floor slab. Initial response actions consisted of removing a 4’x4’ section
of floor slab and excavation of six drums of heavily contaminated sandy subgrade soils. Soil core samples
confirmed that residual petroleum contamination remained from a depth of 4 to 6 feet below grade. TPH
concentration of the soils averaged 4,200 ppm. The soils could not be excavated without undermining the
house foundation.

SOLUTION
Apply MicroSorb products through hand-augured wells
The residual contaminated soil was treated in situ on May 9 with 10 pounds of MicroSorb® SC, 1 pound of
MicroSorb® Nutrients, 55 gallons MicroSorb® Biocatalyst and 1 gallon of MicroBlue®. The mixture was
applied through 2” diameter hand-augured wells. The augmented bioremediation application method was
especially effective in eliminating fuel oil vapors from the basement. The owners were able to continuously
occupy the house throughout the cleanup and bioremediation.

RESULTS
No petroleum odor, 92% reduction of TPH concentrations
The effectiveness of the bioaugmentation application was evaluated on January 27, 1998, by coring soil
samples at the release point adjacent to the location of the original sample. The soil core samples had no
petroleum odor or other visual evidence of contamination. The January soil samples had TPH concentrations
of 350 ppm, a reduction of 92% in 8 months. The results of the January 1998 soil analyses confirmed that a
permanent solution had been achieved at the site in accordance with Massachusetts regulations: no TPH
concentrations in excess of applicable soil cleanup standards were detected eight months after the initial
bioremediation application. The cost of biotreatment, including MicroSorb®SC, MicroSorb® Nutrients,
MicroSorb® Biocatalyst, and application of the mixture was $2,275.

PROJECT B-1

Ex Situ Treatment Projects (in Lifts or Bio-Piles)

Bulk Fuel Oil Terminal, Natick, MA

PROBLEM
Petroleum hydrocarbon release during reconstruction of large bulk fuel oil terminal
A release of petroleum hydrocarbons to the environment was discovered in June of 1996, during reconstruc-
tion of a large bulk fuel oil terminal located in Natick, Massachusetts. The release was discovered during the
decommissioning and removal of underground storage tanks (USTs) and above ground storage tanks (ASTs),
ranging in size from 250 gallon capacity to 20,000 gallon capacity. The hydrocarbon components in the soils
were identified as No. 2 fuel oil and lubricating oil, at concentrations which exceeded applicable Massachu-
setts cleanup standards. Volatile organic compounds were not identified as constituents of concern.

SOLUTION
Ex situ bioremediation of contaminated soil, using MicroSorb® SC, Nutrients and Biocatalyst
Ex situ bioremediation of the contaminated soil was selected as the most cost-effective response action. Ap-
proximately 3,000 cubic yards of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils were placed within a single, fully
contained biotreatment bed, constructed solely of 6 ml polyethylene bottom and sidewall liners, hay bales, and
silt/construction fencing to minimize construction costs associated with piping, sumps, pumps, stock tanks, etc.
Five control soil samples were obtained from selected areas within the biotreatment bed and were analytically
tested to determine total petroleum hydrocarbon (THP) concentrations prior to biological treatment. Since
December, 1996, 25 pounds of MicroSorb® SC, MicroSorb® Nutrients, and 165 gallons of MicroSorb®
Biocatalyst were combined with non-chlorinated water and directly applied to the contaminated soil. Soil
sampling and analytical testing were performed periodically to monitor the efficacy of the biological treatment.

The results of the analytic testing are presented in the table on the following page.

The results of the analytical testing over the 10-month period since treatment began indicated an overall
average reduction in TPH levels of 65%. Over 700 cubic yards of treated soil meet the most stringent Massa-
chusetts cleanup standards and were suitable for reuse on-site. Estimated costs for disposal of the soil and a
soil recycling facility was approximately $60. per cubic yard. The cost-to-date for the biological treatment of
the soil has been approximately $9 per cubic yard.

PROJECT B-2
Ex Situ Treatment Projects (in Lifts or Bio-Piles)

Former Fueling Facility, Taunton, MA

PROBLEM
Long-term low level petroleum-based releases at a former bulk plant
A release of gasoline and kerosene to the environment was discovered in June of 1997 during closure of a
former large bulk plant terminal in eastern Massachusetts. The release was discovered during the de-commis-
sioning and removal of aboveground tanks, underground tanks, and associated pumps, piping, and dikes.
Soils were analyzed for volatile petroleum hydrocarbons (VPH) and the results exceeded the Massachusetts
Contingency Plan (MCP) cleanup standards applicable to the site.

SOLUTION
Ex situ bioremediation of 300 yards of contaminated soil in a bio-treatment bed on site
During September 1997, approximately 300 cubic yards of gasoline/kerosene contaminated soils were exca-
vated and spread within a single bio-treatment bed measuring approximately 40 feet by 90 feet. The bio-
treatment bed bottom and sidewalls were lined with 6 ml polyethylene, and the sidewalls were bermed to
contain runoff from precipitation and spray irrigation. The contaminated soil was spread to an average depth
of 2 feet over the entire biotreatment bed. Hay was continually mixed in with the soil during placement.
Prior to bioremediation, numerous soil samples were obtained and analyzed for VPH. During early October
1997, the biological treatment was initiated by mixing 75 pounds of MicroSorb® Super Concentrate Mi-
crobes, 20 pounds of MicroSorb® Nutrients, and 2000 gallons of MicroSorb® Biocatalyst in one tank truck.
The bioremediation mixture was then sprayed over the entire bio-treatment bed. An automated irrigation
system was installed to regularly apply de-chlorinated water over the bio-treatment bed. During December
1997 the bio-treatment bed was covered with a black poly liner to promote biodegradation during the winter
season.

RESULTS
Contaminated soils bioremediated to the most stringent standards - cost approximately $15/
cubic yard
In June, 1998, oil samples were obtained to evaluate the effectiveness of the augmented bioremediation.
Results of the VPH analysis indicated that over 80% of the bio-treatment bed had VPH levels below the
applicable S-1/GW-3 cleanup standard. On average, the C5-C8 aliphatics had been reduced from over 800
ug/g to less than 100 ug/g; the C9-C12 aliphatics were reduced from 1,800 ug/g to less than 120 ug/g; and the
C9-C10 aromatics were reduced from 600 ug/g to less than 50 ug/g. During October 1998, 12 months after
the initial bioremediation application, final soil samples were obtained and all VPH concentrations were
below the applicable S-1/GW-3 cleanup standard. The ex situ bioremediation was considered complete at this
time. The contaminated soils were bioremediated to the most stringent Massachusetts cleanup standard for a
cost of approximately $15.00 per cubic yard.

PROJECT C-1
Sewerage Treatment Projects

Sewage Pump Station, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

PROBLEM
Sewer treatment: noxious odor in a residential area; corrosion control
The summer climate in Abu Dhabi is severe, with daytime temperatures consistently above 1000F. Odors
emanating from sewer manways create a public health nuisance. A sewage pump station, PS2/12, receives
effluent from a slaughterhouse. The effluent is high in sulfides and creates noxious odors in a residential
area. Municipal engineers had been working on this problem for many years.

SOLUTION
Mist MicroSorb®OW into sewer manway; use MicroSorb®OW and MicroSorb®SC
MicroSorb® OW and MicroSorb® SC were selected for testing in order to determine if MicroSorb products
would abate the odor problem. MicroSorb microbes are grown in seawater with ammonia and crude oil as
energy sources. MicroSorb® OW provides substantial quantities of oxygen and nitrogen to treated wastewa-
ter. On November 21, 1999 two tests were conducted. The first test involved treating noxious odors emanat-
ing from the sewer manway receiving the PS2/12 effluent. MicroSorb® OW was misted into the manway
using a hand-held agricultural sprayer; odors were instantly eliminated. The second test involved sampling
eight liters of wastewater collected from the sewer manway. The samples were taken to the Mafraq Wastewa-
ter Treatment Works Lab. A solution of 0.3% MicroSorb® OW with a few grams of MicroSorb® SC was
selected as the optimum concentration to eliminate soluble sulfides. Soluble sulfides decreased from 2.4mg/l
to non-detect. The pH increased from 7.2 to 8.6. On January 25, 2000, another round of testing was per-
formed. Again wastewater was retrieved from PS2/12 and treated to a concentration of 0.3% MicroSorb®
OW with a few grams of MicroSorb® SC. Soluble sulfides were reduced from 6.0 mg/l to 1.4 mg/l. The pH
increased from 6.7 to 7.0. The daily flow from PS2/12 was 204,000 gallons/day. The treatment works daily
flow was 61,930,000 gallons/day. The discharge of PS2/12 represented 0.33% of the total flow to the treat-
ment works. Additional analysis was conducted in order to determine the effect of the treatment on the total
sewage flow; 16.5ml of the treated sample from PS2/12 was added to 50 liters of raw sewage taken from the
treatment plant influent. There was no pH change; however, the soluble sulfides in the sewage plant influent
sample decreased from 15.2mg/l to 9.4mg/l.

RESULTS
Testing proves that the addition of MicroSorb® OW and MicroSorb® SC to sewage eliminated odors and
raised the pH, thus reducing the potential for corrosion. (See following pages.)

PROJECT C -3
Sewerage Treatment Projects

Wastewater Treatment Plant, Steiner Ranch, TX

PROBLEM
Odor and grease problems
Steiner Ranch is a small community approximately 20 miles northeast of Austin, Texas, with its own school
system and water and sewer systems. The wastewater treatment plant is a small activated sludge facility
originally designed to treat 15,000 gpd. Because the plant is located at the highest point in the community, a
number of lift stations are required to pump sewerage to the plant. In 1993, operating at 13,000 gpd, the
system was plagued with many problems and the plant effluent was not meeting its Texas state discharge
requirements. Fouled by grease, the lift stations had mechanical and odor problems, and the grease interfered
with plant operations, causing excessive floatation in the clarifier and a high BOD effluent. Hydrogen sulfide
in the lift stations destroyed the automatic pump controls, metal parts, ladders, covers, and concrete struc-
tures. In addition, the lift stations frequently overflowed, requiring constant supervision and frequent grease
removal. The system was being treated with ferric chloride and peroxide without success.

SOLUTION
Lift stations treated weekly with MicroSorb®SC
In January of 1993, lift stations were treated weekly with the equivalent of only four ounces of
MicroSorb®SC.

RESULTS
Grease was eliminated, odor reduced; no immediate need for new treatment plant
Grease was immediately eliminated from the pumping stations and odor was greatly reduced. Hydrogen
sulfide generation ceased. The influent BOD to the treatment plant was reduced from 250 to 125, the clarifier
began to function properly, and the plant achieved state effluent standards.

Since 1993, the community has grown such that now the plant is treating 90,000 gpd and still meeting state
standards. With weekly treatment of MicroSorb® SC at the lift stations, the plant influent BOD is now only 5.
Odors, hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, have been eliminated and lift station maintenance has been greatly
reduced. The addition of MicroSorb®SC increased system efficiency such that the requirement for a new
treatment plant was delayed by four years.

PROJECT C-4
Sewerage Treatment Projects

MWRA Pump Station, Quincy, MA

PROBLEM
Rapid grease buildup in wet well
The MWRA Quincy Pump Station had for years experienced a rapid grease buildup in the wet well (6 inches
or more every few days). Left unchecked, the fats, oils, and grease (FOG) eventually became several feet
thick, requiring physical removal (high pressure hose, hand shoveling into vacuum hoses) a potentially
hazardous working environment. The average wastewater flows at the facility were 7.5 million gallons/day.

SOLUTION
MicroSorb® Microbes, MicroSorb® OW and MicroBlue® disintegrate grease cap
In March, 2000 personnel at the Pump Station began treating the grease buildup with MicroSorb® Microbes,
MicroSorb® OW (a nutrient which has an extremely high oxygen content), and MicroBlue®, a biodegradable
surfactant. Within two weeks, the grease cap began to disintegrate, the walls of the wet well began to appear
free of grease, and flow of wastewater was unimpeded.

The microbes attacked the oil and grease compounds, converting the insoluble FOG to water soluble fatty
acids. The microbes continued to “clean” the entire wet well, i.e., piping, bricks, grates, and target. Microbes
go wherever there is a food source (FOG) and moisture. MicroSorb® OW provided the microbes with a most
favorable environment to multiply and devour the FOG. The MicroBlue® emulsified the FOG, making the
FOG molecules more bioavailable.

RESULTS
Wet well was cleaned in four weeks
In four weeks, the wet well was cleaned using only 75 pounds of MicroSorb® ER, 55 gallons of MicroSorb®
OW and 15 gallons of MicroBlue®. The Pump Station is now on an automated system applying MicroSorb®
OW, MicroBlue®, and Microsorb® ER at rates designed to eliminate grease buildup.

Spills and Historical Releases to Surfaces (Natural and Manmade)

Quick Lube Facility, Warwick, RI

PROBLEM
Concrete bay floors were covered with slippery, oily conditions
At a quick lube facility in Warwick, Rhode Island, the bay floors were covered with years of oil buildup and
other residues from servicing vehicles. Oil had also accumulated in the bay lifts. These conditions were
causing a managerial concern for employee injury due to slippery floors – as well as odors and unsightly
working conditions.

SOLUTION
Scrubbing of floors with MicroSorb® ER and MicroBlue®
The floors were initially swept to remove any loose material and then they were scrubbed with stiff brooms
utilizing MicroSorb® ER, MicroBlue®, and water. Four bays were scrubbed and left moist for a few hours.
The microbial and emulsifier solution was then directed to the lift sumps where additional microbial action
could take place.

The microbes and emulsifier attacked the oil in the crevices of the concrete floor and eliminated the oil and
slippery conditions.

RESULTS
Floors no longer slippery or oil covered
With the oil and slippery conditions removed from the bay floors, the floors were able to be painted the next
day, and the dangerous and unsightly conditions were eliminated.

PROJECT D -2

Spills and Historical Releases to Surfaces (Natural and Manmade)

Restaurant, Berlin, NH

PROBLEM
Flooded basement with tipped over oil tank
A restaurant in Berlin, New Hampshire, had a water main break, releasing water into the basement over a
weekend. The rising water level floated and tipped over a freestanding oil tank in the basement. The release
was not discovered until almost the entire basement was flooded with oil floating on top of the 10+ feet of
water. The fire department was called in to pump out the basement, leaving the entire basement area coated
with an oil film and heavy oil odors.

SOLUTION
Apply MicroSorb® ER to all surfaces
MicroSorb® ER was applied to all walls, floors and surfaces. The product was applied with brushes and the
entire area was misted twice a day for one week. This was all accomplished through the approval of the local
Board of Health.

RESULTS
Odors were gone in hours, oil in days
At the end of one week the heat was turned on in the basement and the MicroSorb® ER was vacuumed off all
surfaces. All oil and odors were eliminated and the Board of Health gave the approval to reopen the restau-
rant.

Septic Sewage and Grease Trap Treatment Projects

Automobile Service Center, Seabrook, NH

PROBLEM
Motor oil waste in septic tank
In Seabrook, NH, a septic tank at an automobile service center was required to be pumped in preparation for
closure as a result of a new sewer connection. When the cover of the tank was removed, the pumper refused
to remove the contents, as a 1/4 inch of used motor oil waste was floating on top of the septage. A hazardous
waste contractor also refused to take the oily waste because of the septage.

SOLUTION
Apply MicroSorb®SC, aerate, circulate
Two pounds of MicroSorb® SC were applied to the tank along with an aeration and circulation system.
Another pound of MicroSorb® SC was applied over a two-week period.

RESULTS
Oil is gone in two weeks
At the end of the two-week period, the oil was gone. The treated water in the tank was pale gray and the
septage hauler removed the tank water.

PROJECT E -2

Septic Sewage and Grease Trap Treatment Projects

Residential Septic System, Norwell, MA

PROBLEM
Homeowner’s cesspool and leaching field near failure; frequent pumping required
A homeowner’s cesspool and leaching field was nearing failure, with pumping of the cesspool required every
few months. There was also a presence of odors. It appeared that the system was not working properly, as
solids and the scum layer were entering the leaching field, fouling it with fats and greases. Liquid in the
cesspool was continually above the elbow leading to the field.

SOLUTION
MicroSorb® IS was applied to the cesspool with an initial dose and monthly treatments
One pound of MicroSorb® IS was applied to the system and then monthly treatments of one to two ounces
for one year.

RESULTS
The system has been performing properly with clear liquid leaving the cesspool
Within a few months, the cesspool no longer needed pumping and clear effluent was observed leaving the
cesspool to the leaching field. The liquid level in the cesspool was maintaining itself below the elbow to the
field, indicating that the leaching field was functioning properly. In addition, odors had disappeared. The
septic system pumper was amazed at the condition of the system and was quoted as saying: “I don’t know
what you’re doing but keep doing it!”

The homeowner is now pumping annually for maintenance purposes only.

PROJECT F -1
Farm Wastes Treatment Projects

Chicken Grow-out House, Maryland

PROBLEM
High ammonia levels, poor air quality in chicken house

SOLUTION
Application of MicroSorb® IS to chicken house floor
Prior to the release of chicks, MicroSorb® IS was applied to the floor of a chicken grow-out house at a rate of
1 pound per 1,000 feet in a dry powder form. Approximately 1/4 of the floor area was covered. As the grow-
out proceeded, the grower noticed the level of ammonia was less in the area where the MicroSorb® IS was
applied and that the chickens tended to stay in that area. After approximately 4 weeks, samples were taken of
the litter in the area where MicroSorb® IS was applied and also from litter of a grow-out in a neighboring
house with chickens of approximately the same age.
RESULTS
Inorganic nitrogen converted to organic nitrogen, a food source.
Results of the lab analysis were as follows:

Parameter Results (mg/Kg) Results (mg/Kg)

Without Microbes With Microbes
Nitrogen, Ammonia 6,600 3,900
Nitrogen, Nitrate 1,000 53
Nitrogen, Nitrite 310 20
Nitrogen, Total Kjeldahl 4,400 6,500
Phosphorus, Total 3,000 2,100
Phosphate, Total 9,200 6,400
TCLP Phosphorus, Total 360 140
(RCRA Hazardous Waste Characterization) (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) (TCLP)

The inorganic nitrogen was converted to organic nitrogen, a food source. The leaching characteristic of the
phosphorus was reduced, a benefit to groundwater and surface waters. With the reduction of the ammonia, air
emissions were reduced, the health of the chickens improved, and mortality rates decreased by about 50%.
Grow-out times were reduced, thus increasing production rates. The microbial consortium in MicroSorb® IS
has a concentration of 567 billion microbes/ounce. Fifteen pounds of MicroSorb® IS will treat a grow-out
house.

Generic Designs for Bioremediation

MicroSorb Environmental Products, Inc. has prepared the following generic designs of bioremediation
systems which intercept and treat contaminated groundwater or simply treat the groundwater through direct
injection.

Advantages of using an interceptor, treatment ,and injection bioremediation system:

• The plume is controlled.
• Free product is destroyed by microbes in the bioreactor, i.e., no waste disposal, no activated
carbon usage.
• Microbes in the bioreactor adjust to the contamination.
• The injection of treated groundwater containing microbes saturates the soils above the water
table, bioremediating contaminated soils.
• The injection of treated groundwater creates a groundwater mound which increases groundwater
flow, reducing the time of remediation.

MicroSorb® SC (Super Concentrate) may be mixed with MicroSorb® Nutrients in a drum of MicroSorb®
Biocatalyst. The mixture may then be pumped into a series of small diameter injection wells screened in the
contaminated zone. The costs of the above bioreactor system are eliminated, however a number of injections
may be necessary to achieve a satisfactory cleanup
