Exercise 1

Exercise 1 Indirect actuation of a single-acting cylinder

Problem Description By using a turning device, parts are to be transported on a conveyor track facing the
right direction.

By pressing the push button switch, parts are turned by the piston rod of a cylinder
and proceed, correctly positioned. When the push button is released the piston rod
is returned to it s start position. Use single solenoid directional control valves.

Exercise 2 Indirect actuation of a double-acting cylinder

Problem Description Using a lid lifting device, snap-on lids are to be pressed onto plastic buckets.

By pressing a push button switch, the domed press is advanced and the snap-on lid
is pressed on. When the push button switch is released, the domed press is returned
to its start position. Use single solenoid directional control valves.

By pressing two push butt on switches, the cutting blade is advanced and the sheet

Exercise 4  Indirect actuation with “ OR” function

Problem Description Using a tipping device, liquid is to be poured from a vat.

By pressing either one of two push button switches, the vat is tilted and the liquid is
emptied. After releasing the push button switch, the vat is returned to the upright

Exercise 6 Indirect actuation with reversal by means of an electrical limit switch

Problem Description Parts are to be pushed away from a multi-track gravity feed magazine into a
clamping device.

By pressing a push button switch, the parts are pushed out of the multi-track gravity
feed magazine by a slide. After t he slide has reached the forward end position, it is
returned to its start position. Use double solenoid directional control valves.

Exercise 7 Indirect actuation with oscillating motion of the piston rod

Problem Description Using a rotary indexing table, plastic containers are to be separated in linear
sequence.

By pressing a detent push button switch, the oscillating piston rod of a cylinder
drives the rotary table in sequence via a pawl. When the push button is pressed
again, the drive is switched off. Use double solenoid directional control valves.

Exercise 8 Electrical latching circuit

Problem Description Using a sliding table, a plank of wood is to be pushed under a belt sanding machine.

By pressing a push button switch, the sliding table with t he plank of wood
positioned on it is pushed under the belt sanding machine. By pressing another
push butt on switch, the sliding table is returned to its start position. Use single

Exercise 9

Exercise 9 Oscillating motion of the piston rod with monitoring of t he end position by means of
magnetic proximity switches

Problem Description Using a diverting device, parts are to be removed from one conveyor track onto
another in linear sequence.

By pressing a push button switch, the oscillating piston rod of a cylinder pushes the
turntable via a pawl in stepped sequence. The parts are diverted and transported
onwards in the opposite direction. By pressing another push button switch, the drive
unit is switched off. Use double solenoid directional control valves.

Exercise 10 Pressure dependent reversal

Problem Description Parts are to be stamped with a stamping device.

By pressing two push button switches, the die is pushed down and the part is
stamped. When the stamping pressure has been achieved, the die is returned to its
start position. Use double solenoid directional control valves.

Exercise 11 Pressure dependent reversal wit h monitoring of t he end position by means of


magnetic proximity switches

Problem Description Using a hot pressing die, packing material is to be sealed by application of heat and
pressure.

By pressing a push button switch, the heating rail is advanced and the packaging
material is heated along the adhesive strip. After t he adhesion pressure has been
reached, the heating rail is returned to its start position. Use double solenoid
directional control valves.

Exercise 12

Exercise 12 Co-ordinated motion control with auxiliary conditions

Problem Description Using a transfer station blocks are to be transferred from a magazine to a processing
station.

The blocks are pushed out of the magazine by cylinder 1A and transferred to the
processing station by cylinder 2A. The piston rod of cylinder 2A may only return
when the piston rod of cylinder 1A has reached the retracted end position. The
magazine is monitored by means of a limit switch. If there are no more blocks in t he
magazine, it is not possible to start t he cycle. This is indicated by means of an
audible signal. The control is to be operated in single cycle. Use a single solenoid
directional control valve for cylinder 1A and a double solenoid directional control
valve for cylinder 2A. A detent push button switch is used to replace the limit switch
S3 on the input plate.

Exercise 13 Lifting device for boxes

Problem Description Boxes arrive on a roller conveyor and are lifted by Cylinder 1A. Cylinder 2A ejects t he
boxes onto the second roller conveyor. Cylinder 1A retracts. Cylinder 2A retracts
when Cylinder 1A has reached its initial starting position. Use single solenoid
directional control valves.

Exercise 14

Exercise 14 Transfer device for boxes

Problem Description Two cylinders are used to transfer parts from a magazine onto a chute. When a push
button is pressed, cylinder A extends, pushing the part from the magazine and
positions it in preparation for transfer by cylinder B onto the outfeed chute. Once the
part is transferred, the second cylinder retracts followed by the first.

Exercise 15

Exercise 15 Bending device

Problem Description The bending tool is used to bend metal strips. The strip is inserted manually. After
pressing the Start push button, Cylinder A clamps the workpiece, Cylinder B bends
the part and returns to its initial position. Cylinder C completes the bending
operation. After Cylinder C has returned to its initial position, Cylinder A releases the
part.

Use three single solenoid spring return directional control valves.
