I am student teaching at P.S/I.S 180 Hugo Newman Prep in Harem, New York which is large neighborhood in the northern section of the New York City borough of Manhattan.
Harlem has a population of around 363,633 and has a booming level of community support for education within P.S 180. Although there are many families who are not involved
in the community of the school any families are due to the mix of socioeconomic status. When affluent families are involved in their child’s education they help support the
teacher and school community. This helps support a teacher’s classroom community by providing supplies, volunteering in the classroom, supporting the teacher in providing
academic support for the student.

P.S/I.S 180 Hugo Newman Prep School has a population of 615 students from the grades of Universal Pre K to eight grade. The school is a part of District 3 school district in New
York City and has a offers free and reduced lunch. All children at P.S 180 receive free breakfast and 64% of students receive free lunch while 5 % receive a reduced price lunch.
52% of the students are males, 58% are African American and 29% of students are Hispanic. 8% of the schools population is Caucasian leaving 5% of the population of the school
mixed minorities.

Some affects these characteristics could have o the planning, delivery and assessment of my unit is that most of the families are Spanish speaking and the children who are
English Language Learners struggle in the school setting. Due to many families speaking another language P.S 180 has rolled out a pilot to integrate a dual language classroom.
With into the school they have one class in each grade that has a dual language program. This supports English Language learners and also challenges those seeking to learn a
new language. Just recently, District 3’s education department approved changes in the area to allow students to apply to any middle school of their choice within the Harlem
area. Instead of families being zoned for schooling the board opened the floor to families to hear their concerns and this past summer it was approved. By doing so parents and
the PTA can support teachers and their child’s education by being involved.

ranks 1,737th of 2,386 of the elementary schools in New York. The different characteristics at P.S 180 could effect the planning, delivery and assessment of the classroom in
many ways. There can be many challenges when a family speaks another language and struggles to communicate with the school and teacher. P.S 180 offers a translator for
families during parent teacher conferences and has bilingual teachers throughout the school to support the parent in communicating their needs. The school also uses the app,
Bloomz where the teacher can post pictures and reminders of current happenings in the classroom. This app also allows families to pick the language they prefer to use the app
in to provide consistent communication for the family. Another hurdle that would affect the classroom community is the lack of supplies. Supplies are provided by the families
and many families cannot afford to buy supplies. This makes it difficult to organize classroom academics and often the teacher will buy the supplies. At P.S 180 the PTA is
involved and provides each classroom with money to buy supplies that were not perchance by families. This takes away the financial burden from the teachers and supports the
students with supplies in the classroom to be successful.
