IUSA Zipcar Project to Expand

Over the last 12 months, IU has been a leading University implementing the Zipcar Automobile
Service. Zipcar is covering the streets of high population areas such as London, New York City
and Los Angeles. As it stands, IU has one main Zipcar parking station outside of Ernie Pile.
However, in conjunction with the Indiana University Student Association, they will be adding
more! The service is based off the online site, zipcar.com where a student can log in and pay the
initiation fee for an endless use of the car. All students will also be receiving a $35 driving
credit to be used at their discretion within the first month of registering. The car will be charged
on an hourly basis of $8/hr during the week and $9/hr during the weekend. There are also daily
rates, where students can drive the vehicle for up to 180miles within 24hrs and only pay $66 for
a weekday or $72 for a weekend day. Gas? Free! Any person that drives the car will be given a
Zipcar VISA gas card that can be used at any gas station. The system sounds too good to be true,
so what is IUSA doing about making it stand out?

As Chief of Transportation for IUSA, Riley Zink states, “Zipcar is an environmental and
economical way to travel about Bloomington if you are without a car or that is could be used to
completely replace the need for a vehicle at school”. However, Zipcar has not been the most
widely advertised organization on campus right now. Many of us have seen their cars or
brochures on the campus buses, yet, when questioned, students are still not completely aware of
the cost efficient way of getting around campus. When speaking with student and asking what
they think about Zipcar, they reply, “What’s that?”. This is the area that IUSA is trying to
amend. With the upcoming improvements that are coming along with the Zipcar and IUSA, the
student associations hope to notify all students about the Zipcar system. They plan on having
enhanced advertisements and an addition to the number of vehicles. Jen Peterson, Vice President
of Congress for IUSA mentioned, “I think it is a great system and I'm very glad we've been able
to implement it at IU; I know a lot of my friends have used it to run errands etc. Its a great way
to be able to expand IU students accessibility to the city of Bloomington and I am very excited
for the campus to see the rest of what IUSA has been working to bring to IU”.

IUSA is ready to move forward with the attention grabbing system and as the Zipcar brochure
proclaims, "College is about saving, not sacrificing. Whether you need a car for a few hours to
run errands or the whole day (to get away), you can use Zipcars and never worry about a car
payment, insurance payment, or a fill up -- it's all on us."
