Production Proposal

The Woods – Music Video

Project Concept:

This Music Video will be a narrative about a dancer who's city family life
style is interrupted when they decide to move to the country. This
narrative will follow him along his story of losing his friends and any
personal connections he did have when he moved away. It will show
how he faces an unforeseen family death/emergency and how this
causes him to find love and comfort with his new home. This video will
be aimed to provoke an emotional response from the viewers. To do this
the video will use dream like images to convey to viewer into the story as
in a dream.

I intend to use dance performance to evoke the emmotional response

through creative and sensitive coreography. The stage will be made
more dreamlike by the use of smoke machines and soft coloured lighting
effects to communicate the changing emmotions. For example when
they are alone in the new setting the lighting could be blue and colder,
when the crisis occours red tones convey the emergency and finally

warm yellows could be used to show love and happiness. I will need to
get the agreement of the dance group to help and will film the b roll on
the stage. I hope to fit this in before the Chrsitmas show in order to
optimise the lighting set up.

I will get feed back from the dancers and other students to help me
develop the ideas at each stage. I will use my own time to film
sequences in the urban and country environments. I will need to seek
help with the coreography and research the use of colour to
communicate emmotions. I may include timelapseand if so I may need
to use the go pro for this element. I have access to smoke machines and
lighting if required.

Rationale:
During the first year of the course I have learnt a lot about creative
media, I had reasonable practical knowledge about the function and use
of equipment but less experience of the creative process. Initally I found
directing peers difficult but have developed more confidence over the
first year and have developed strategies to ensure better quality and
more professional outputs. However I prefered the technical and factual
aspects of media production.
I have therefore chosen the specialism of editting. I have chosen to
focus on this in order to broaden my horizons. I already have some skills
in technical lighting gained through my work in theatre with the NYT. I
feel that being able to offer strong editting skills and knowledge would
widen my employment options in the media industry both in creative and
business productions. I have enjoyed developing basic editting skills and
in the last unit I have discovered more techniques that I hope to use in
this music video in particular a montage and time lapse.
I have challenged myself with a more emmotive and creative theme to
the music video than last year. My work on ‘learning to fly’ told a clear
narrative however lack emmotional response. By harnessing my existing
technical knowledge of lighting and stage effects I hope to address both
in this music video.
Evaluation
I feel that my best evaluation was produced last year in the final
documentary by keeping a regular reflective log, supported by images to
jog my memory. I used an adapted version of Gibb’s reflective cycle as

described by Oxford Brookes University
(https://www.brookes.ac.uk/students/upgrade/study-skills/reflective-
writing-gibbs/, accessed Novemeber 2018) shown below:

I found this helpful and would try to maintain this process in both of the
projects. I will need to work with others to develop this video so I will
naturally have regular peer feedback and I will try to use this in my
reflective accounts.
At the end of the projects I feel that focus groups or interviews after
people have watched the videos gives more detailed and helpful feeback
than questionaires. The information is usually more detailed however
people may hold back so as not to upset you face to face. Therefore I
will also use questionaires.

Earths Time – Stop Motion

Project Concept

Having researched several formats for stop motion animation I have

decided to use everyday materials such as play dough, I loved the
Wallace and Gromit animations and would love the challenge to
replicate just a simple animation using these techniques. As my target
group is adults I wanted to find a suitable topic that would appeal to this
demographic. Global warming, enviromental sustainability and the
science of creation are all topical themes that should appear to this
group. I am aiming to use the production to create a new take on the
creation of earth and the universe through manipulating different

elements millimetres at a time in each frame to create the story. By
using timelapse I can convey the huge amount of time to create the
world and how quickly modern civilisations can destroy it.

The narrative will begin with a black spherical ball on a white surface this
will then begin to vibrate and shake until it explodes into a shower of
blue, white green and grey in a earth shaped ball. From here the ball will
show the theory of evolution as the ball adapts and changes as it passes
through the years that the earth was created and established, a twist to
this production will be that as the time is passing humans begin to
rapidly develop. The purpose of this will to show the steep rate of
destruction of the global forms such as the polar ice cap that took a long
time to develop. It will aim to show the effects of humans on earths eco-
system and the aim is to get a emotional response of shock and anger
from the audience. This is a more factual and political video with a
serious message. I want to make people think about the impact their
actions will have on future generations.

This fiming can be done away from college but I may try to use the
studio green screen to give the clean unclutter background required.

Rationale
During the first year of the course I have learnt a lot about creative

chosen the specialism of editting. I have chosen to focus on this in order
to broaden my horizons. I have enjoyed developing basic editting skills
and in the last unit I have discovered more techniques that I hope to use
in this animation in particular time lapse to show the speed of change.
I have indulged my love of plasticine animation and feel that combining
this will a serious political message will be both interesting and
challenging. I enjoyed researching examples of videos to convey a
serious message last year and although the final video was my best
work the theories were very interesting and I will use them for this to
communicate the sustainbility message.
Evaluation
As with the other project I will continue to make use of reflection.
However I will need to keep a photographic log of the stages of

Production Proposal

development of the plasticine models that I can assess on their visual
impact and clarity.
I will build the video bit by bit and I intend to edit as I go along so I can
get ongoing feedback from tutors and peers. I think this is more suitable
for this style of animation as waiting to the final edit for feedback maybe
too late to make changes.
