Reading and Writing: Job Application-Writing a Resume

CONTENT STANDARD:
The learners understand the requirements of composing academic writing and
professional correspondence.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learners produce a type of correspondence following the properties of well-written
texts and process approach to writing.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
The learners:
1. identify the unique features of and requirements in composing professional

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. define resumé by creating a simple format.


2. recognize important details included in a resumé.
3. construct resumé with information suited for a job vacancy.
4. write resumé contents with grammatical correctness effectively.

TIME FRAME: 3 days

INTRODUCTION:

One major tool in applying for a job is writing an effective resumé. Yet, doing so is not an
easy task. There may be a lot of resources we can use to be well-guided. Tips from the
internet can be downloaded at a click of your finger. However, it is best to construct your
resumé using your own simple style considering only the use of information conforming
to the job vacancy you are applying for.

ACTIVITY 1: WHO AM I?

A. Concept Development:
The teacher shall provide each student with a META CARD. In 2 minutes, students shall
be tasked to write their skills which they think made them better from the rest of their
classmates.

ACTIVITY 2: GALLERY WALK

A. Concept Development:
The class shall be tasked to post their Meta cards anywhere in the classroom.
Afterwards, students shall explore the contents of the cards placed around the room.

B. Guide Questions:
1. Which among the Meta cards contain skills that you need for a job hiring? Why?
2. Why do you think other skills written on the posted Meta cards do not suit for a job
hiring?
3. If you will choose one from among the skills listed, what would it be and why?
4. What important skill do you think one must have to take advantage of a job hiring?
Why?

ACTVITY 3: JOB ADVERTISEMENT

A. Concept Development:
The teacher will present the Classified Ad item from Manila Bulletin offering job vacancy
in the class. For 2-3 minutes, students will familiarize themselves on the contents of the
Ad.

ACTIVITY 4: LEADING ATTENTION

A. Concept Development:
To give the students hint of what to expect in the day’s class session, the teacher will
post the question below.

A. Concept Development:
Students shall be tasked to get a partner, share views and provide suited information to
the organizer below. Three minutes shall be allotted for the activity.

ACTIVITY 6: SCAVENGER HUNT

A. Concept Development:
Scattered everywhere in the room are pieces of folded papers with questions. Students
shall be asked to look for each of them, unfold the paper to reveal the contents and
answer them.

B. Comprehension Questions:
1. What is a resume?
2. What information do you expect a resume include?
3. How can this information in the resume help the job applicant?
4. How important is writing a resume?

ACTIVITY 7: JOB INTERVIEW

A. Concept Development:
The teacher shall play a short job interview video of two applicants who carry with them
resumés to initially market themselves. However, the resumés of the two applicants
illustrate the good and the not so good one. Further, the video is localized. Students
would see three among their teachers portraying the role of applicants and the
interviewer.

B. Guide Question:
1. What difference have you noticed based on the interview?
2. As shown in the video, what does the applicant’s resume tell the interviewer?
3. How does the resumé help the applicant to sell himself for the job?
4. Why do you think the interviewer seem to favor one with the well-constructed resumé
as shown in the video window?

ACTIVITY 8: IN A NUTSHELL

A. Concept Development:

The class shall be grouped. Using the classified Ad previously presented, each group
shall be tasked to write sample resume collaborating information from its members.

Activity 9: DO IT YOURSELF

A. Concept Development:
Students shall be tasked to write an individual resume in accordance with the situation
provided by the teacher.

B. Situation:
Pretend that you a fresh graduate of the course you desire to take in the university. Write
a resume effectively marketing your qualifications that will motivate employer to hire you
even without experience yet.
