 AASL Standards for 21st Century Learner – Collaborate: share and grow

Learning Goal

This lesson is for three 9th grade classes on 10/26 and three on 11/5.

The learning goal is for students to explore the media center in groups and working together to build an understanding of the
available resources. Throughout this lesson, they will watch a video and hear a brief lecture about the media center’s policies and
resources. After this, the students will be able to explore these stations and have some free time for further investigation.

Assessment Plan

Informal pre-assessment: Gathering knowledge on their understanding of the media center.

 Many of these students have already used this center during the first few months of school
“How is the media center similar or different to your middle school media centers?”
“What are some things you’ve already used within this space”

1
Formative assessment: Each group will answer one question per member. In answering different questions per person, we will
ensure they are able to write about the media center resources/policies in a collaborative board.

Instructional Procedures

Students will enter the classroom and sit at the tables

Do introduction activity
 As a group, students will use the ipads to research their group name (a famous author)
 Students will then introduce themselves and one work of their author to the class.

Preassessment

[TV Production Media Center Orientation Video]

 Watch the video
 Explain media center policies and resources to students, highlighting what the video showed

Scavenger Hunt
 Students will walk around, scanning QR codes and following the clues from one area to the next
 At each stop, they are required to list group name and answer the related question about the policies and resources
 Modeling: Show students how to scan the QR codes, place an answer and demonstrate how the next clue appears.
o Stress that the clue will be on the answer submission page, so do not “x” out upon answering the question.

Formative Assessment: Padlet

 Once students complete their Padlet, they should work together to answer one question per group on the Padlet.
 No repeat questions

Free Time
 Students may then checkout a book, look at the resources, or investigate the media center further until the end of class.
