If you are planning to study, live or work abroad, you will need to take an IELTS (International
English Language Testing System) test. IELTS is recognised by educational institutions in many
countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. It is also recognised
by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. It is increasingly
gaining recognition as an alternative to Teaching of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) test.

To take an IELTS:

1. Choose an IELTS test dates and location in the Philippines

2. Download the IELTS application (http://www.britishcouncil.org/philippines-exams-ielts-

application-form.pdf)

3. Complete IELTS application with the following requirements

• Provide photocopy of a valid National ID which can be any of the following: passport; PRC ID;
SSS or GSIS; LTO Driver’s License. Your ID should still be valid on the exam day.
• Provide 2 passport size coloured photos signed on the back.
• Which module should I choose, Academic or General Training? It is the candidate’s
responsibility to select the test module. If in doubt, contact the organisation you are applying to
and ask for its requirements.
4. To submit the IELTS application
• Drop off at the British Council.Philippines 10th Floor Taipan Place, F. Ortigas Jr. Road,
Ortigas Center, Pasig, Philippines, 1605. Registration is from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to

This part of the test has different forms for the paper and pencil TOEFL test and the IBT.

The following examples are for the PBT. IBT examples will be forthcoming.

PBT TOEFL test listening example 1:

Man: I'm feeling kind of sick tonight. I don't know if I have a virus,or if it's something I ate for lunch.
Maybe we should stay home tonight.

Woman:   I think you're right. I feel a little under the weather myself.

Narrator: What does the woman mean?

(A) She believes the weather is too bad to go out.

(B) She is not feeling well herself.
(C) She didn't eat lunch.
(D) She disagrees with the man.

"I feel under the weather" means that "the woman is not feeling well"; the answer is B.

 
PBT listening example 2:

Woman:  What's the problem? Were you offended by what I said?     

Man:  No, I just got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

Narrator: What does the man mean?

(A) The woman is wrong.

(B) He is in a bad mood.
(C) He injured his side getting out of bed.
(D) He was offended by the woman's comments.
 
"To get up on the wrong side of the bed" is an idiomatic expression that means "to be in a bad
mood." The correct answer is B.

LISTENING PART A. MEANING QUESTIONS.

EX.1

Man: I've heard that the new Chemistry class is really difficult.

Woman:  Oh, I wouldn't say that. I took Chemistry 402 last quarter, and I think the course went
very smoothly.

Narrator: What does the woman mean?

(A) The chemistry class is very tough.

(B) The chemistry class is not teaching this quarter.
(C) The chemistry class is easier than the man thinks.
(D) The chemistry class should be avoided if possible.

"Oh, I wouldn't say that" indicates that the woman disagrees with the man. The best answer is C.

EX.2

Woman:    I've heard great things about that movie that just came out. You want to go see it
tonight?

Man:  I'd love to, but I've got a history final in two days, and I haven't studied all quarter. I think
I'd better take a rain check this time.

Narrator:  What does the man mean?

(A) He needs to take a break from his studying.

(B) He loves the woman very much.
(C) He doesn't like going out in the rain.
(D) He will not be able to accompany the woman.

"I'd better take a rain check this time" means that the person "cannot do the activity." The correct
answer is D.

EX.3

Woman: The bus isn't supposed to arrive at this stop for another 30 minutes. I guess we'll just
have to wait until it comes.
Man: Normally I'd agree with you, but I'm only going to the next stop, and I feel like stretching
my legs.

Narrator: What does the man mean?

(A) He is going to wait for the bus.

(B) He is going to wait for thirty minutes only.
(C) He is going to walk to his destination.
(D) He injured his legs and will return home.

"I feel like stretching my legs" means that the man "feels like walking." The correct answer is C.

EX.4

Man: How did you feel about the movie?

Woman: I was really moved by the performances. What did you think?

Man: I found them uneven: strong in some scenes, weak in others.

Narrator: What does the man mean?

(A) He has never seen a better movie.

(B) He thought the acting lacked consistency.
(C) He doesn't think the actors performed well.
(D) He had already seen the movie.

"Uneven" means "inconsistent"; the correct answer is B.

Woman: It's burning up in here. When is the technician supposed to arrive?

Man: I called the company over an hour ago. They said she was on her way.

Woman: Yea, but the last time it took days for them to send someone out.

Man: You're right, it's anybody's guess when she'll show up.

Narrator: What do these people mean?

(B) She should arrive soon.
(C) There's no way to know when she'll arrive.
(D) They thought she would already have arrived.

"It's anybody's guess" means that there is "no way to know exactly when" the person will arrive.
