IP-901

DESCRIPTION: Printing to the IP901 controller through Microsoft* Windows 2000 is slow. SOLUTION ID: 156120
SOLUTION: CAUSE: There is a problem with the standard TCP/IP* port implementation in Windows 2000 and USAGE: 55
possibly Windows XP. The Windows port monitor is waiting for an ack (response) from the printer
within a preset amount of time and will not send the next packet until receiving the ack. Controllers
that are running Windows seem to be mostly affected by this. Embedded Fiery controllers are
running LINUX* and do not seem to have an issue.

SOLUTION: There is a temporary fix for this that is currently only available by calling Microsoft.
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 816627. This fix is specific to Windows 2000 only. Konica
Minolta cannot provide this patch as it is only available by directly contacting Microsoft and
requesting it. It is not publically available for download. An easier workaround is to [[load the "Print
Services for Unix" on Windows 2000| URL http://techweb.konicabt.com/tpm/media/Unix.wmv]]. To
install "Print Services for Unix", perform the following:
1. Click on Start => Settings => Control Panel.
2. Start "Add Remove Programs" and select "Windows Components".
3. From the "Windows Components" list, select "Other network file and print services" . "Print
Services for Unix" is the only selection available from that list.
4. Once loaded, this will add "LPR port" to the ports list when adding a new printer port.
5. When selecting an LPR port, the top line of the LPR port dialog box is the TCP/IP address of the
Fiery and the bottom line is the queue to be printed to. The choices for the bottom line would be
print, direct, or hold.
Notes:
a. Printing with the LPR port should be significantly faster on a 100BaseT network when sending
large files.
b. The latest version of [[Windows Media Player| URL
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp]] must be installed to view
the above link.

DESCRIPTION: How to make booklets on the 8050/IP901 with version 1.1 system code. SOLUTION ID: 167342
SOLUTION: Booklet mode settings vary slightly, depending on the application being used. Updated instructions USAGE: 27
have been posted on the [[Konica Minolta FTP site| URL ftp://kbtdigital:kx15@ftp.konicabt.com]].
These instructions illustrate the specific application and driver settings required to make a booklet
on 8.5x11 or 11x17 paper, 12 X 18 is not supported as a printer function.
Note: These instructions are specific to version 1.1 system code and do not apply to version 1.0.

DESCRIPTION: Failure to properly print booklets from Pagemaker* version 6.5 or version 7. SOLUTION ID: 159999
SOLUTION: This feature is not supported when printing from any version of Pagemaker* due to a problem with USAGE: 17
Pagemakers interaction with the PPD file that is installed in Pagemakers PPD4 folder. Booklets
must be setup in the application and sent to the printer as a normal print job for finishing.

There is a workaround for this issue that may allow booklet mode to function correctly. This is only
for Windows based systems. This workaround should in no way be considered a fix for this issue
and is completely unsupported. No support can be given for any booklet mode print job from
Pagemaker to the 8050 with an IP-921 or IP-901 controller running 1.0 or 1.1 system code.

1. Move all of the ppd files from the USENGLSH/PPD4 into another folder. It doesn't matter where,
as long as there are no PPD files left in the PPD4 folder. Or you can rename the PPD4 folder.
2. Launch Pagemaker and open your document. When you select "Print" from the file menu, an
error will occur which states: "Output may not look as expected", "No valid PPD files were found.
Check the PPD4 directory in USENGLSH". Ignore this error and press Continue. If the 8050 is not
the default driver, select it. This error will occur again. Press continue if the error comes up.
3. Press the "Setup" button. This will launch the normal GUI interface of the Fiery driver. You can
now make any driver selection that would normally be selectable from any application. This also
includes being able to select features that were not part of the PPD file. i.e. Secure Print, User ID,
etc...

IP901. If using the ES-1000 for calibration, the device is recognized by the controller. If
running the Spot-On program, the ES-1000 is not recognized by the controller.

SOLUTION: The password is: 'Fiery.1'. The password is case sensitive. USAGE: 16

DESCRIPTION: How to secure the IP901 against future virus and worm attacks. SOLUTION ID: 174353
SOLUTION: Security hotfixes will only protect against current virus or worm threats, but may not prevent future USAGE: 15
attacks if a new vulnerability is found in the Microsoft* Windows operating system. If TCP/IP* port
filtering is enabled on the controller, port access can be controlled, so it is less likely a new virus or
worm can get into the controller. To enable port filtering, access to the Windows desktop on the
IP901 is required. This can be accomplished two ways. If a FACI kit is installed or by enabling
Remote Desktop.
Konica Minolta has posted a patch on the Konica Minolta FTP site that will enable Remote
Desktop. Download the [[patch| URL

will explain how to enable and use Remote Desktop. It also details how to enable and configure
port filtering on the IP901. Screen shots are included to illustrate each item, as it is difficult to
explain these concepts using just text.

DESCRIPTION: Booklet mode and some other features are missing from the Macintosh* print driver for the SOLUTION ID: 160276
8050/IP901. How can booklets be made on a Macintosh without being able to select this
feature from the driver?
SOLUTION: This issue has been escalated, but as a workaround, the Micosoft* Windows PPD file for the USAGE: 12
8050/IP901 can be used on the Macintosh to enable access of these features. As the Windows
PPD has not been fully tested on the Macintosh, there may be some unexpected printing
abnormalities. The missing features in the Macintosh PPD are: Mixed Media in Use, Creep,
Centering , Booklet and Imposition Reduction.

System code Version 1.1 has added these features in the OS 10.2x driver. These features are still
not in the OS 9x driver.

installed correctly within CorelDRAW.

SOLUTION: To make the CorelDRAW output print in the proper orientation, install the PPD by
performing the following:
1. Print out a Microsoft* Windows test page and determine the correct PPD for the printer.
2. On the general tab of the print dialog box, click the "Use PPD" checkbox. If a PPD has not been
previously loaded, a "Select PPD File" dialog will appear.
3. Browse to the folder containing the PPD (search .ppd will locate the proper folder). Select the
PPD stated on the Windows test page and click OK.
4. Once the PPD is selected, click on the "Properties" button in the print dialog and choose the

SOLUTION: CAUSE: The specifications for the 8050 in printer mode specify a minimum of two (2) sheets of USAGE: 3
paper and a maximum of twenty (20) sheets of paper for a booklet job.

SOLUTION: Booklets with one sheet of paper can be printed, but will not be folded as it is not
required to staple only one sheet of paper. There is no option in booklet mode to fold, but not
staple, a booklet.

Version 1.1 system code allows for a single page folded booklet. Stapling and folding are now
selected independent of each other.

DESCRIPTION: ENGINE UNDER OPERATION message is displayed on the IP901 LCD when the 8050 RADF SOLUTION ID: 158967
is lifted or any copier button is pressed. Printing cannot be performed during this period.
SOLUTION: CAUSE: The 8050 is configured by default to copier priority if a copier operation is performed. USAGE: 3
Printing is not allowed for a period of 30 seconds after the last copier operation is performed.

SOLUTION: The timeout period can be set for 15, 30, 60, 90 seconds or turned OFF. If printing is
the primary use for the 8050, turning this timeout OFF will ensure the 8050 is always available to
accept print jobs. If a user wants to perform a copy job, print jobs will be allowed while copying is
being performed. The copy job will be scanned into memory and will print in the order that it was
stored on the 8050.

a client computer, do the following:
1. From a Windows 2000/XP client computer, create a local user with Administrator for the user
setting and set the password to "Fiery.1"
2. Restart the computer and log in as an Administrator with the Fiery.1 password.
3. Navigate to the Fiery S300 to install the printer driver and set the Two-Way Communication

that is 4 or greater. If the paper is a custom size, this is specification for the engine. Auto tray
selection will not function with custom paper sizes.

SOLUTION: To change the paper tray type settings, perform the following:

2. Enter the key operator passcode if required and press OK.
3. Select 6 PAPER TYPE / SPECIAL SIZE SET.

DESCRIPTION: Job Monitor utility does not communicate with the IP901 from a Microsoft* Windows client SOLUTION ID: 161161
with the printer installed from a share off a Windows 2000 server.
SOLUTION: CAUSE: There is a problem with the standard TCP/IP* port implementation in Windows 2000 and USAGE: 3
possibly Windows XP.

SOLUTION: There is a temporary fix for this that is currently only available by calling Microsoft. An
easier workaround is to [[load the "Print Services for Unix" on Windows 2000| URL
http://techweb.konicabt.com/tpm/media/Unix.wmv]]. To install "Print Services for Unix", perform the
following:
5. When selecting an LPR port, the top line of the LPR port dialog box is the TCP/IP address of the
Fiery and the bottom line is the print queue. The choices for the bottom line would be print, direct,
or hold.
Notes:
a. Printing with the LPR port selected on the Windows server will allow the clients Job Monitor
utility to communicate with the 8050/IP901.

DESCRIPTION: Pages made in QuarkXPress* that either contain rotated images or are rotated to landscape SOLUTION ID: 162874
orientation, will not print correctly to Konica Fiery*-based printers when using OPI and
using the default PPD for those devices.
SOLUTION: CAUSE: Page layout applications when printing in landscape can rotate the page either clockwise USAGE: 3
or counterclockwise to achieve landscape mode. Some PostScript* Printer Definitions (PPDs)
specify which way the output device would prefer to have the page rotated when printing in
landscape.
QuarkXPress respects the *LandscapeOrientation line given in PPDs, and will rotate the page
either clockwise or counterclockwise depending on how the *LandscapeOrientation line in the PPD
specifies.
QuarkXPress assumes a rotation of -90° when printing landscape. As a consequence, the OPI
comments QuarkXPress inserts into its PostScript cause the images to print inverted. Thus, OPI
servers (including FullPress) replace images as if the page has been rotated -90, and thus images
do not show up at all (if their bounding boxes do not intersect from a +90 and -90 rotation), or show
up out of place and upside down.

SOLUTION: Until Quark addresses its inconsistency, the workaround solution is to edit the PPD
file on both Macintosh* and UNIX* systems. On the Mac this file lives inside the System
Folder/Extensions/Printer Descriptions. On UNIX it is found in /var/adm/appletalk/ppds. If any

existing printer queues are set up, change the copy of the PPD that the individual printer queue is
using. The file name to change is PRINTER.PPD. To find the directory that it lives in, run the
following command:
grep sd= /etc/printcap
The sd (spool directory) is where the PRINTER.PPD file lives for each printer queue. Simply
remove the line that reads LandscapeOrientation: Plus90.

DESCRIPTION: The new IP901 version 1.1 print driver allows the screen settings to be set for images and SOLUTION ID: 168321
graphics to line or dot. What are considered images and graphics and what effect will
changing the screen settings have on the final print?
SOLUTION: With version 1.1 system code, the screens settings can now be set from the print driver for print USAGE: 3
jobs that contrain Images (vector graphics) or Graphics (bitmap graphics). Text cannot be changed
and is defaulted to a line screen.
The default screen for images and graphics is a line screen. There are a couple of reasons that
the screen should be changed. In some cases, a dot screen may produce a better looking image
than the line screen. If text is placed over a graphic/image, changing the screen may produce a
less noticable "halo" around the text.
There are output profiles on the IP901 that are specific to a line or dot screen. If using an output
profile that is associated to either screen, it is desirable to calibrate the calibration set that is
associated with that profile. If calibration is not performed, color will appear different when using
either output profile.

IP-901

1. When formatting objects in the worksheet or chart, use solid colors whenever possible.
2. The problems described in this article do not occur when using solid colors.
3. If applying a pattern to an object, use white as one of the two colors.
4. If possible, use two colors that contrast with each other. For example, red and yellow contrast
well with each other; sky blue and aqua do not.
5. Before printing the worksheet or chart, use print preview to view the printed output.
6. Then reformat objects in the worksheet or chart as required. This step helps save paper and
reduce unnecessary printer usage.

DESCRIPTION: ES-1000 will not connect to some IP901 controllers using a FACI kit. The same ES-1000 SOLUTION ID: 199748
works fine on a PC or Macintosh*.
SOLUTION: CAUSE: GretagMacbeth changed the USB controller chip on later ES-1000 units. In some cases, USAGE: 2
there is a problem with the USB handshake issue between USB controller on IP901 motherboard
(has also been seen on some laptops) and the USB controller chip in the ES-1000 itself. This only
happens in rare cases.

SOLUTION: EFI has found that using a USB hub between the IP901 and the ES-1000 resolves the
issue. EFI tech support will send a hub to a location that is experiencing this issue, provided all
troubleshooting steps have been followed and the system is still not working. They will need the
serial number of the controller, ES-1000, and address/telephone number where the unit is to be
sent.

ES-1000 Spectrometer functionality troubleshooting

The primary tech support issue faced with the ES-1000 is connectivity related problems. If you
encounter this type of problem with your ES-1000, please review product documentation, paying
close attention to installation procedure. If your computer or print server still does not recognize the
ES-1000, try the following steps;

1.) For a Mac or PC to recognize the ES-1000 properly, the USB driver for it must be installed.
Installing either Profiler for Printers, or, Profiler for Monitors will automatically install the USB driver.
On a Windows PC go to Device Manager and with ES-1000 plugged into USB, you should see
listed "GretagMacbeth Device/eye-one. If not, ES-1000 is not working, USB driver not installed
correctly, or USB port is faulty.
2.) If you can't get one PC or Mac to "see" the ES-1000, install one of the two Profiler applications
above on another computer. Then connect ES-1000. Is device seen now? If it is, then you can be
pretty sure problem is not with ES-1000 device itself. Go back to original computer and uninstall
Profiler application. Reboot. Reinstall application. Reboot again, then connect ES-1000. If device
still is not seen, try another type of USB device just to see if the problem is with the computer's
USB port. Sometimes, a powered, or unpowered USB hub placed inline between computer and
ES-1000 will resolve this issue.
3.) If in step 2, you find that no computer you try will recognize the ES-1000, then you can be
pretty sure the ES-1000 itself is faulty. To verify this, or to fully test an ES-1000, you can download
the "ES-1000 Diagnostic Tool" from http://www.efi.com/support/downloadNew.fhtml . You first must
complete a quick registration, then select "EFI Software" link and choose utility from drop-down for
download. There is a Mac and a Windows version. For more information on using this tool, go to
http://www.efi.com/products/color_profiler_faq.fhtml
4.) Keep in mind that on a Mac OSX machine, the ES-1000 is not supported when running in
"Classic Mode". If you want to use the ES-1000 while in a OS9 application, you must boot into OS9
- not go into Classic Mode while booted up into OSX.
5.) An EFI print server must have support built into it for use with an ES-1000 if you intend to use
it as a calibration device or use it for Spot-On within Colorwise Pro Tools. Verify that you EFI print
server model actually supports this. Most models sold prior to 2003, and even some current ones,
did not support the ES-1000 as a calibrator or with Spot-On. In some cases a patch or a newer
version of Colorwise Pro Tools will enable these applications for use with the ES-1000. Please
contact your OEM or EFI Tech Support to determine if your EFI print server can be "enabled" to
use the ES-1000 for Calibrator or Spot-On. If the ES-1000 is being used on a Fiery controller that
has the FACI kit installed, the monitor provided with the FACI kit contains a powered USB hub in its
base. This should function the same as any hub that would be provided by EFI tech support. Plug
the ES1000 into the monitor hub and plug the monitor hub into the Fiery's USB port.
6.) If you have tried all the steps above, and ES-1000 is still not being detected, and, you have
determined that the device is bad by using the ES-1000 Diagnostic Tool, then the RMA return
process should be initiated. Again, please contact your OEM or EFI Tech Support.

following issue:
A security vulnerability exists in the Messenger Service that could allow arbitrary code execution on
an affected system. The vulnerability results because the Messenger Service does not properly
validate the length of a message before passing it to the allocated buffer.
An attacker who successfully exploits this vulnerability could be able to run code with Local System
privileges on an affected system, or could cause the Messenger Service to fail. The attacker could
then take any action on the system, including installing programs, viewing, changing or deleting
data, or creating new accounts with full privileges.
This patch will install the following Microsoft hotfixes on the IP901:

DESCRIPTION: Colors and shades of gray from Microsoft* applications are printing with an incorrect color. SOLUTION ID: 175525
Grays may print with a color cast. Several objects using the same color may all print using
a different color. If this is printed on another color printer, the colors and grays print
correctly.
SOLUTION: CAUSE: Microsoft uses a screen to represent a transparent color or a shade of gray. By default, USAGE: 1
the IP901 prints with a line screen for graphics and objects. The controller's line screen does not
correctly render colors from Microsoft applications that use a transparency on a color.

SOLUTION: If the screen setttings in the driver are set to 'dot', the colors are rendered correctly.
Note: This only appears to be an issue with Microsoft applications and transparent colors/grays.

1. If a document contains color on any page, ensure that the "Pure Black Text and Graphics"
option is set as a default under color setup. If this option is not enabled and the first page of the
document is color, the whole job may be printed as color.
2. If the document contains any gray scale graphics, it will be printed as a process black. Most
gray scale images contain color components which are RGB or CMYK. The printer does not have
the ability to print a true gray without using process black.
3. Most office applications create gray shades which are used as lines or frames using RGB data.
These will also print as process black.

DESCRIPTION: Does the IP901 have a Bypass HDD feature? SOLUTION ID: 159536
SOLUTION: The IP901 does not have a Bypass HDD feature, but it does have a Direct Queue feature. These USAGE: 0
jobs are processed as soon as the current job finishes, skipping over other waiting jobs and in
many cases do not write to the hard drive. PDF, TIFF and variable data jobs as well as jobs sent
via SMB and LPR are routed, in most cases, directly to the Print Queue when sent to the Direct
Queue. However, jobs sent via the Direct Queue may also be written to the hard drive in certain
cases, including the following:
1. The job is instructed to collate or use reverse order printing and it exceeds the available printer
memory.
2. On Microsoft* Windows-based and LINUX*-based systems, the Fiery software may overflow the
available RAM and use the hard drive as a memory buffer.
CAUTION: It is not recommended to send detailed graphic print jobs (i.e., PhotoShop*) via Direct
Queue. When the job is RIPped, it will become much larger than the original and will not print
'efficiently'.

*[[Trademark ownership information| FILE V:\TEXT\TRADEMRK.TXT NEW]]

DESCRIPTION: When is job data written to/stored on the IP901 Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and Random Access SOLUTION ID: 159539
Memory (RAM)?
SOLUTION: IP901 offers three print queue choices: Direct, Hold, and Print. When a job is printed to the Direct USAGE: 0
Queue, the job data is most secure. When a job is printed to the Hold or Print queue, it is spooled
to the IP901 hard drive (in its pre-rasterized form). After a job is RIPped, its rasterized form can be
held, and therefore saved on the IP901 hard drive for printing later, or may be "waiting" for engine
availability, and is therefore saved in RAM while doing so. After a job is finished printing, it may
remain on the hard drive (in case of reprinting) in its pre-rasterized state.

DESCRIPTION: Is it possible the IP901 controller can become infected by a virus? SOLUTION ID: 154485
SOLUTION: Technically, the possibility of the virus or worm damage is assumed to be very low based on the USAGE: 0
following points:
1. Although Windows based operating system is used with this controller, the target for many
attacks such as Microsoft* Outlook* is not used.
2. E-mail attached files other than print files such as PostScript*, PDF, etc. are not opened.
3. The print files are solely sent to print queue and other process are not performed.

DESCRIPTION: Will Microsoft* Windows XP Service Pack 2 create printing problems? SOLUTION ID: 182514
SOLUTION: Service Pack 2 (SP2) is, in many ways, a new XP, and there is no way to test every possible USAGE: 0
combination of hardware and software on which it might be installed. Practice due diligence and
evaluate the specific XP deployment before installing XP SP2.
There are several pre-installation steps that should be considered:
1. Understand the benefits of installing the service pack:
a. Malware attachment warnings
b. Malware download warnings
c. Pop-up blocker
d. Firewall turned on by default
e. Windows Security Center GUI that lets end users see and manage security settings (this can
be blocked in a managed environment)
f. Enhancements to auto updates, including improvements for dial-up users
g. Better management of browser add-ons and e-mail addresses
h. A new wireless deployment wizard useful for small businesses

2. Grab a copy of the recovery document from [[http://snipurl.com/8gju| URL

http://snipurl.com/8gju]]. This document discusses how to recover from a problem XP SP2
installation. Please take the precaution of printing out the recovery instructions. Hopefully, they
will never have to be used.. At any rate, be prepared when priorities change and XP SP2 must be
installed immediately. When rushed, looking for recovery information before installing may end up
being an after-thought.
Windows XP SP2 is also an issue for IT departments using SUS for updates, since it may need to
be blocked from some SUS client computers and approved for others. Remember that the service
pack will have to be approved in the SUS server database before clients can receive it, giving an
extra layer of protection to SUS shops.
If any of these scenarios applies, here are some resources. Start with the free Microsoft tool at
[[http://snipurl.com/8gjw| URL http://snipurl.com/8gjw]]. It includes an executable, a script, ADM
template to use with Group Policy, and sample E-mail text to be used to inform users on how to
block and unblock delivery of XP SP2.
Note: Refer to the following linlks for more information about blocking:
[[http://snipurl.com/8gjx| URL http://snipurl.com/8gjx]]
[[http://snipurl.com/8gjz| URL http://snipurl.com/8gjz]]
[[http://snipurl.com/8ei8| URL http://snipurl.com/8ei8 ]]
For those who like to do things the hard way, the Registry can be edited to block XP SP2 delivery.
Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate and add the new
value DoNotAllowXPSP2. Set the value to 1. This will block delivery of XP SP2 via SUS or
Automatic Updates for up to 120 days. Removing the value will allow delivery of XP SP2, as will
the passage of time. This isn't a permanent solution; it just affords a little more breathing room.
And finally, do not believe everything read or heard. Contrary to some rumors, XP SP2 does not
break things; it fixes things. Sometimes closing holes means good software will need to be revised
or reonfigured.
Note: Most of the Microsoft URLs referenced above are very long; the "snipurl" versions do not
break, and will not expire.
CAUTION: Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage the system. Before making
changes to the registry, back up any valued data on the computer.

WARNING: In Windows, system configuration information is centrally located in the registry. While
this simplifies the administration of a computer or network, one incorrect edit to the registry can
disable the operating system. The following list provides some best practices for using the registry
and Registry Editor safely:
1. Before making changes to the registry, make a backup copy.
2. Back up the registry by using a program such as Backup. After making changes to the registry,
create an Automated System Recovery (ASR) disk. For troubleshooting purposes, keep a list of
the changes you make to the registry. For more information, see System State data.
3. Do not replace the Windows registry with the registry of another version of the Windows or
Windows NT operating systems.
4. Use reliable tools and programs other than Registry Editor to edit the registry.
5. Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage the system. Use tools and programs that
provide safer methods for editing the registry.
6. Never leave Registry Editor running unattended.
