One to two cropping cycles for rice is practised in the area – 1st cropping from May/June to September/October and 2nd cropping from
October/November to February/March due to lack of water supply for irrigation.

Most of the farmers employ the transplanting method during the 1st cropping and broadcast during the 2nd cropping . The planters
are hired at P150 per day. The rate of seeding ranges from 40-80 kilograms per hectare. On fertilizer application, the farmers use the
following rate for their farms:

21-0-0 (ammonium sulfate) = 2 bags/ha.

14-14-14 = 2 bags/ha
Urea = 4-5 bags/ha.
All the farmers apply appropriate pesticide when necessary following the recommended rate. Insecticides and fungicides are used
to control insect pests and diseases and herbicides are used to control weed growth. Farmers manually harvest their crops and use the
thresher. Solar drying is the mode for drying their palay.

C. Water Consumption
Most of the farms rely mainly on rainwater as source of water for their irrigation, others on the communal irrigation supplied
by Camiling River Irrigation System (CAMRIS). When not sufficient, the farms have their own shallow tubewells to support the
irrigation.
For their domestic water needs for cooking, taking bath, washing clothes and dishes, the farmers who live in the area of study
depend on shallow wells.

D. Food Security Profile

Most of the farmers experience hunger especially during “taggutom” or “gawat”. Since most of the farmers are dependent on
farming, their income is unstable and is based on the harvest from their farms. Typhoon, drought and lack of funds are the causes of
few harvests for the farmers.
E. Membership in Organization
The farmers have an organization named Titi Calao Communal Irrigation Association.
