2. Safety instructions
When using products which are supplied by electrical voltage, the valid VDE regulations have to
be observed, especially VDE 0100, VDE 0550/0551, VDE 0700, VDE 0711 and VDE 0860.

• Before opening the instrument you must always disconnect it from the mains or make sure
that the instrument is powered off.

• Components, assemblies or instruments must not be put into operation before they were
installed in a housing so that they are protected against accidental contact. During the
installation they have to be powered off.

• Tools must not be used with instruments, components or assemblies before it has been
made sure that the instruments have been cut off the power supply and the electrical charges
which are saved in the instrument’s components, have been discharged before.

• Live cables or lines which are connected with the instrument, the component or the assembly
must always be checked for faulty insulation or ruptures. If a defect in the supply line is
discovered, the instrument must be immediately put out of service until the defect line has
been replaced.

• When using components or assemblies it must always be made sure that the specifications
for electrical units mentioned in the relevant manual are strictly observed.

• If it is not clearly discernible from a present manual for the non-commercial end consumer
what electric specifications apply for a component or an assembly, how an extern wiring is to
be carried out or what extern components or additional instruments are allowed to be
connected and what connected load these extern components may have, an expert has to be
asked for information.

• Before setting the instrument into operation you must always check whether the respective
instrument or the components are basically suitable for the purpose for which they are
intended! In case of doubt it is absolutely necessary to double-check with experts, specialists
or the manufacturers of the components used!

• Attention! Under no circumstances must there be any external charging while a 9V block
battery is used! Danger of injury!

Please be aware that we cannot be held liable for any damage resulting from improper use.

3. Proper use
The signal counter Z6 can only be used for data acquisition resp. evaluation of current meter
signals with discharge measurements in lakes, rivers and canals. Only current meters with
contact signal or appropriate outputs of cable way installations with identical features are
allowed to be used as sensors.

4. Product description
The Z6 is a high-integrated signal counter which can be used together with the usual current
meter equipment for discharge measurements in lakes, rivers and canals.
With the basic version, the impulses can be counted in freely pre-definable measurement
intervals. Optionally, the impulse number to be counted can be pre-selected (Z6-I, I-option). A
further option is the direct calculation of the current velocity by means of pre-definable
equations (Z6-V, V-option). There are several memory locations for all adjustments. All the
user-defined adjustments can be made directly at the device or via connected PC and can be
saved permanently. Optional modules can also be activated later by entering a code which can
be purchased from SEBA.
The usage of a modern 16-Bit micro-controller guarantees a long life time of the battery.
Due to the flash technology, later software updates are also possible with the customer.

Optionally, an 8.4V block accumulator can be inserted instead of the 9V block battery. This
optional accessory consists of a suitable accumulator and a mainsconnector. The charging
socket is already present in the compartment at the back side of the instrument. A charge circuit
with battery management (Discharge/Charge) is already integrated.

5. Assembly
The current meter equipment is connected with the counter sockets at the front side of the
instrument. For this please use the cable which was delivered together with the current meter
with 4mm bunch plugs (banana plugs). If the cable way installations are connected by third
parties the polarity has to be inverted, if necessary, when connecting them to the counter
sockets.

SEBA HYDROMETRIE, Operation Manual Z6

6. Maintenance
The battery compartment, the RS232 interface and the charging socket can be found at the
back side of the instrument underneath a hinged cover.

For exchange of the battery, connecting the RS232 or the charger the cover at the back side of
the instrument is opened as follows:

2
2
1

1. Push the cover forward with your thumbs at the middle of the hinge. Thereby the spring axle
is gently bent and the locking mechanism at the opposite side is released.

2. At the same time lift the cover at the side of the locking mechanism.

The plastic cover of the battery compartment can be opened with a small screwdriver. When
reinserting the battery, please make sure that no cable is squeezed.

Attention! Counter is not water tight when cover is open!

In principle measurement can also be performed while the charger is connected, provided that
the instrument is protected against moisture (for example in the hut of a cableway installation).

Option: Integrated accumulator with charginger

Here an 8.4V block accumulator, which is absolutely maintenance-free, is used instead of the
block battery. When the mains transformer or the car charging cable is connected with the
charging socket, the charging of the battery starts automatically.
In order to increase the life span of the accumulator, the accumulator should be regularly
discharged (before about every 10. charging process)!

- 6/28 -
SEBA HYDROMETRIE, Operation Manual Z6

If the accumulator voltage is not sufficient for operation, the accumulator can, of course, be
temporarily replaced by a 9V block battery.
Attention! Under no circumstances must there be any external charging while a 9V block
battery is used! Danger of injury!

The surface can be cleaned with a soft cloth. Do not use any aggressive detergents when
cleaning the display!

7.3 General operation

Functions of modules which are not activated (I-option for preselection of

impulses and V-option for velocity calculations) are not visible for the user.
Every time you press a button, it is confirmed by an acoustic signal.
The Start-/Stop-button directly starts measurement at any time. If you press it within a menu,
the changed settings are immediately used.
The available operation options are shown graphically in the above indicated flowchart (7.2).

7.4 Switching on

The Z6 is switched on by pressing the ON-button.

Only with the option "Mains supply and internal accumulator":
From the charging mode the counter can be put into normal measuring operation by pressing
the ON-button.
After the instrument was switched on, it is in the same operation mode (preselection of time/
impulses) as before it was when switched off. Settings like time, impulse number, buzzer on/off
and the calibration factors to be used remain the same, too.

7.5 Switching off

The Z6 can be switched off at every time by pressing the OFF-key. For a short time you will see
the message

OFF

After three short acoustic signals, the Z6 switches off.

7.6 Basic menu

The display shows the active preselection of time or impulses. The preselections of time are
always indicated in 5-digit figures, whole-numbered and with preceeding zeros. With
preselections of impulses, a preceding "P" marks the highest digit.
By pressing the I-button or the T-button, it can be switched from preselection of time to
preselection of impulses and vice versa (only with I-option). From here you can directly start
measurement by pressing the Start-/Stop-button or switch to the instrument settings with the

- 10/28 -
SEBA HYDROMETRIE, Operation Manual Z6

7.7 Selection of the active preselection of time or impulses

From the basic menu you can switch to the selection of the preselection of time or impulses to
be used.
The instrument has 8 memory locations, where the settings for the preselection of time/impulse
are saved. These values can be set by the user via PC and even directly at the Z6. In addition
the memory location 0 is occupied with "0000". This corresponds to continuous operation
(manual measurement with Start-/Stop). During the measurement the user can quickly switch
between these memory locations, that means between the settings.

The standard setting when the instrument is delivered is as follows:

Memory Preselection of time Preselection of impulses

location (only with I-option)
0 0s (continuous 0 (continuous measurement)
measurement) set set
1 30 s 100 Imp
2 40 s 200 Imp
3 50 s 300 Imp
4 60 s 500 Imp
5 80 s 1000 Imp
6 100 s 2000 Imp
7 120 s 5000 Imp

When you enter this menu, the indication with the current adjustment blinks. With the I-button
(up) or. the T-button (down) you can now switch between the memory locations.
After selection the measurement with the new adjustments is directly started by pressing the
Start-/Stop-button.
If you press the ENTER-button the Z6 switches to the main menu to the setting of the buzzer
function.
The content of the currently selected memory location can be edited by pressing the T-button
and the I-button simultaneously.

- 11/28 -
SEBA HYDROMETRIE, Operation Manual Z6

7.8 Editing of the settings for preselection of time and impulses

Attention: This function changes the content of the memory locations for the settings. Normally,
this is only necessary with the basic configuration of the instrument, as the user can define up to
7 settings by himself and call them up with the help of the a.m. selection function.

Example:
A user never uses 40s as measuring interval and wants to have 45s measuring interval instead.
In this case, he switches to the 40s stored in memory location 2 and changes this setting by
means of this function to 45s.

Procedure:
From the selection function for the currently to be activated memory location, the T-button and
the I-button are pressed simultaneously. You will hear 2 acoustic signals and the display will
start to blink quickly.
With every pressing of the I-button or the T-button, the content of the memory location can now
be counted up or down by steps of 5. If you keep pressed one of the buttons mentioned, the
value begins to move with increasing speed in the respective direction.

This process is finished by pressing the ENTER-button. The Z6 switches then back to the basic
indication of the current preselection of time or impulses with the value that has just been
changed.

Alternatively, this setting can also be made with the PC.

7.9 Basic menu

From the selection function of the preselection of time or impulse to be used you can switch to
the basic menu by pressing the ENTER-button. It is always possible to start the measurement
directly from the basic menu by pressing the Start-/Stop-button.

Buzzer function
The first option is the setting of the buzzer function. Optionally you can determine that every
incoming impulse is signalled by an acoustic signal.
On the display "S:" is indicated on the left side. On the right side, the current status is indicated
with "1" for "buzzer active" or. "0" for "buzzer not active".
Changes are made either with the I-button or the T-button. By pressing the ENTER-button it can
be switched to the next menu item.

Selection of the active standard calibration

Provided that the velocity calculation is activated (V-option), the standard calibration to be used
is determined here. If this option is not activated, the battery voltage is directly indicated.

Besides to the preselection of time or impulses, there are also memory locations (0..19) here in
each of which one standard calibration can be found. At the instrument the respective

- 12/28 -

9. Automatic charging of battery

(only with option with internal accumulator and charging
function)
The option "Mains supply and internal accumulator" consists of a maintenance-free 8,4V block
accumulator, which replaces the 9V block battery, and of a suitable mains transformer.
Additionally a battery charger for cars is available. Under the cover at the back side of the Z6,
next to the battery compartment, a charging socket can be found, with which the delivered
mains transformer or the charging cable for cars is connected.

Attention! If a 9V battery has been inserted Charging

instead of the block accumulator, there must be Battery Case Socket
no charging! Danger of injury!

The Z6 recognises automatically when a valid

charging voltage is applied.

Charging with switched-on instrument

In dry rooms (e.g. in the hut of the cable way
installation) the accumulator can also be charged
during measurement.

Attention! Counter is not watertight when cover is open!

As soon as a valid charging voltage is recognised at the charging socket, the charging process
is started. This is signalled by the indication of the left colon. During measurement the charging
is deactivated and the colon disappears.

The instrument cannot be switched off during the charging process. If you press the OFF-button
the Z6 automatically switches to the charging mode described hereafter.

Charging with switched-off instrument

If a valid charging voltage is applied at the charging socket, the Z6 switches on and immediately
changes to the charging mode. This is signalled by the following message:

:LOAd

By pressing the T-button or the I-button, you can switch to the indication of the current
accumulator voltage:

:U9.13

You can also switch back by pressing the T-button or the I-button.

As soon as the cut-off voltage is reached, the display shows:

:End

Now the accumulator is completely charged. If the instrument remains connected, the voltage
constantly holds this charging level.

- 17/28 -
SEBA HYDROMETRIE, Operation Manual Z6

If the charging voltage is withdrawn during the charging process, the Z6 switches off
automatically.

Discharging function
The counter includes a discharging mode in order to prevent from the memory effect and to
extend the life time of the accumulator. About before every 10. charging process, the intern
accumulator should be discharged. The whole discharging/charging process until the instrument
can be used again takes about 6h. The discharging function is only available in the charging
mode.

The ENTER-button activates the discharging mode.

:dIS

If you press the ENTER-button again, the discharging mode is started. If not, the instrument
switches back to the charging mode.
During the discharging process the indication of the accumulator’s current voltage blinks until
the discharging process is completed.

U: 9.06

Then the Z6 switches automatically to the charging mode. The discharging process can also be
interrupted manually by pressing the ENTER-button.

From the charging mode the instrument can always be put into normal operation by pressing
the ON-button. A currently running discharging process must be stopped manually before. The
charging of the accumulator then continues in the background as described above.
