MLA Formatting
MLA formatting is a very simple and easy process that is if you are willing to learn it.
MLA format is mainly used for any paper that most students will type in any English or other
class. MLA stand for Modern Language Association. This format is commonly used in many
areas for academic writing. But this type of format is mostly talked a lot about in English. The
proper way to format your essay is by double spacing the text, while also using the font Times
New Roman. The font size you should also use is a 12-point font.
When starting an essay, you should always make sure that your name, the teachers name,
the class you are in, and the date that the essay is due in the left-hand corner. You should also
include a title that relates to the information that will be put in the essay. When you begin your
first paragraph or any new paragraph in an essay you want to make sure that you also indent the
first line. In order to indent you just press enter once and then press the tab button and it will

Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.3 - Read, write, and compare decimals to
thousandths.
Objectives:
Students will read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths place.
Students will compare two decimals to thousandths place based on meanings of
the digits in each place
Using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Materials Needed:
1 copy of the 2-page worksheet (attached)
1 deck of cards per pair of students (with Jacks, Queens and Kings removed)
1 pencil
Opening the Lesson:
Model the game by playing you against the class
Activity
Project the worksheets on the whiteboard and read the directions aloud with the
class.
Since you’re the oldest, select a card from the deck (if you have not previously set
aside Jacks, Queens, and Kings, do this as you play)
Think aloud as you choose where to place the number you selected

Call on a student to select the next card and have him decide where to put his card
and state the value based on the place he chose.
Continue until all of the spaces are filled in.
Read your final number in the correct form. “My number is 67,943.421.
Call on a student to read the class’ number and help them to read it in correct
form.
Now ask students who has the greater number.
Now ask them which number is smaller.
On page 2, write your number in the Player 1 space and the class’ number in the
player 2 place. Ask them which one of the symbols belongs in the middle, <, =, or
>
Explain that player one always writes their number in the Player 1 place and
player 2 always in the player 2 place, but you will write a different symbol based
on who’s number is greater.
Circle or highlight the greater number to show which partner won this round
Give students time to play the game with their partners.
Check for Understanding:
Students see and compare their results of the game; the teacher can check the comparison
in part 2 of the worksheet to assess students.
