Product Information

POLYPHASE® 663
Broad Spectrum Biocide EPA Registration No. 5383-109
This product is covered under the following Patent: US 6,197,805

Description Polyphase® 663 is a broad-spectrum, water-based product that is effective against a wide variety of
fungal and algal organisms. This product is particularly useful in water-based products in which
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a major concern and more than fungal protection is desired.
It is particularly effective for application over cementitious substrates.

Application/ Polyphase 663 offers excellent dry film fungal and algal protection in exterior paints, masonry
Use coatings, stucco, and pigmented water-based wood protective stains. Polyphase 663 also provides
excellent protection against mildew and algal growth on adhesives, caulks, sealants, and for other
industrial applications.

• Broad-spectrum fungicide and algaecide

Highlights • Zero VOC
• Low hazard profile
• Contains no alkylphenol-ethoxylates
• Does not chalk on exposure
• Color stable in white paint

*Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is an indication of which microorganisms can be controlled

by a preservative and the concentration at which growth of the test organism is inhibited under
laboratory conditions. MIC values are expressed in parts per million (ppm). The lower the MIC value
in ppm, the greater the product’s effectiveness. MIC values should only be used for relative
comparisons. Practical use concentrations are generally much higher and should be established
through field tests and actual use.

Suggested use levels are based on laboratory and field evaluations and are typical for the
Function/ applications indicated. Suggested use levels for the indicated applications should be verified by field
Activity trials. Suggested use levels are reported as a percentage of the end-use product as a ratio of the
Biocide Weight to Weight of the final end-use product.

The actual level of Polyphase® 663 required for antimicrobial protection is formulation specific. The
individual components of the formulation, the PVC level, the substrate to be coated, and the
environment in which the coating will be exposed all have an influence on the amount of protection
needed.

Formulating Formulation Testing

Considerations TROY Corporation’s Microbiological Laboratory is available to provide additional assistance in
determining the proper level of protection needed for your system.

Paint and Coatings

Polyphase 663 has been shown to be an excellent control agent against mold, mildew, and algae for
water-based paints and coatings. In hot, humid areas where mold and mildew are a particularly
severe problem, the higher application levels are suggested. Polyphase 663 should be added with
good agitation at the end of the manufacturing cycle (see Formulation Notes).

Wood Protective Stains (Water-Based)

Polyphase 663 offers broad spectrum protection against the discoloration of the protective film due to
blue stain, mold, and algae. Polyphase 663 does not change the appearance of wood or have any
influence on its coatability. Polyphase 663 is recommended only for pigmented wood stains. For clear
and semi-transparent stains, performance tests should be conducted to ensure that Polyphase 663
does not affect the transparency of the final coating.

Exterior Adhesives, Caulks, And Sealants

Polyphase 663 can be used to prevent the growth of fungal and algal organisms in both the wet and
cured adhesives, caulks, and sealants. Polyphase 663 should be added towards the end of the
production cycle with good agitation.

Formulation Notes
Field testing of final products under actual use conditions is strongly recommended. Metal containers
for formulated products should always be lined. Do not store formulated products for prolonged
periods in iron or steel containers. For paint and coating applications, Polyphase 663 should be
added at the end of the manufacturing cycle after final pH adjustments have been made (not during
the grind).

Subchronic Effects and Other Studies

n-(3,4-Dichlorophenyl)-n,n-Dimethlyurea: In animal feeding studies, this material caused blood,
bladder, and kidney effects.

Methyl benzimidazole-2-yl carbamate: Reproductive effects have been reported in several animal
species (rat, mouse, and hamster) with oral administration based on the highest exposure levels
tested. These include effects on spermatogenesis, decreased fertility, fetotoxicity, and
developmental abnormalities. Genotoxic effects have been demonstrated on both in vitro and in vivo
tests.

Kaolin: In animal studies, female rats fed 20% kaolin in their diet resulted in reproductive effects.

Environmental Fate
This product is a pesticide and may cause adverse environmental impact. Avoid contamination of
streams and sewers.

The active ingredient, n-(3,4-Dichlorophenyl)-n,n-Dimethlyurea, is mobile and has the potential to

leach to ground and to contaminate surface waters. It is very persistent in soils and has a low
bioaccumulation potential.
Aquatic half-life > 100 days @ pH of 7; 22 deg C.
Octanol/water partition coefficient: LogPow = 2.71-2.82

Methyl benzimidazole-2-yl carbamate has a low bioaccumulation potential.

Octanol/water partition coefficient: LogPow = 1.6

The fate of the active ingredient, IPBC, is quite favorable. Degradation is rapid and occurs through
biological as well as non-biological processes. Classified as readily biodegradable. Low potential to
bioaccumulate.
Octanol/water partition coefficient: LogPow = 2.81
