Dear Ms. Smith:

The opportunity to join the University of Central Florida’s News and Information Team is an excellent
match for my 13 years of experience building relationships and brands in respected newsrooms across the
region and country. Couple that background with my nearly seven years of student affairs work and
student storytelling at the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center, and I believe I offer the exact type of
candidate the UCF News and Information Team covets in this search.

During my time in the television news industry I led staff members and cultivated relationships, in four
competitive newsrooms in the country's top 75 markets, including here in Central Florida. In addition, I
successfully transitioned professionally from the private sector to my current role in student affairs, where
I have become a trusted, and valued communicator who is known for collaboration, a robust network of
media connections, and strong writing skills. Specifically, my applicable experience for this job and key
strengths include:

Experienced Leader and Manager: from 2002 to 2011 I led newsrooms and a staff of more than 20
people in two television stations in increasing our audience share. In 2002, in the absence of a news
director I successfully pitched and finalized a fiscal year budget for WXTF-TV. In 2007 at WOFL-TV, I took
over the Fox 35 internship program. In my four years the program had explosive growth, a rise in
diversity and became the working template for all intern programs in all departments.
Writing skills: I have line produced for top rated news and sports broadcasts in four "Top 100" television
markets including rising from editor to 5pm producer at the #1 rated news station in Las Vegas, Nevada in
less than two years. I have written and produced for every day part in broadcast news and sports
broadcasting. I have also executed and approved copy for promotions and broadcast for television
newsrooms in markets: #70 (Green Bay), #64 (Fort Myers-Naples), #42 (Las Vegas) and #19 Orlando-
Daytona Beach-Melbourne. The copy has met all corporate legal guidelines as well as affiliate brand
guidelines. Additionally, my ability to successfully pitch UCF student stories and collaboratively work with
UCF News and Information has helped earn the UCF RWC the reputation of being a national leader in
campus recreation.
Earned media coverage: During my time at UCF I have consistently contributed to ongoing media
coverage of storytelling about the UCF RWC which aligns with the UCF Collective Impact’s promise to
harness the power of scale. My ability to leverage my media connections has led to coverage about the
UCF RWC locally on Spectrum News 13, WOFL-TV Fox 35, WESH-TV NBC 2, and WKMG-TV Channel 6.
Additionally publications like UCF Today, NIRSA Know, The Orange County Observer, The Orlando
Sentinel, and Campus Rec Magazine have featured the UCF’s Inclusive Recreation program, and national
championship teams in Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs.
Building and Managing a Brand: My experience in Orlando and Fort Myers gave me the opportunity to
both conceptualize, plan execute and manage staff members on a multilevel marketing strategy projects
for two Fox affiliates. Including the launching of several news specials or newscasts: the 2009 Digital TV
initiative, an 11:00pm newscasts in my last two newsrooms (2006 and 2008), and a 4:30am newscast in
(2010). At Fox 4 I project managed the development of more than 20 franchises with the “In Your Corner”
brand that even now is the cornerstone of that station's marketing.

I'd would love the opportunity to discuss why my unique newsroom experience, along with my years in
higher education and student affairs would be the right fit for the UCF News and Information team. I can
be reached at (407) 625-3339 or scott.mauro@ucf.edu. Thank you for your time and consideration; I look
forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,

Scott P. Mauro
