AP Calculus AB – Accordion Project Rubric

The goal of this project is to creatively demonstrate how area and volume of solids use
calculus concepts.
1. Each group of three students will need to create a one – sided 16 panel or
eight – sided double sided Accordion Foldable using the “Picture, Set –
up, Work, & Answer” format. (The one group of 2, see Ms. Blackwell for modifications.)
2. Each group will use the digits in their birthday to generate the functions for the
calculations.
3. Each group will create a “Theme” to tie the calculus concepts together. Each word
problem within the Foldable should contain 2 – 4 sentences.
4. The Front Cover requirements:
a. Detailed/Colorful picture of the “Theme” of the Group’s Project
b. Class Period and Class Name
c. Group Members’ Names & Birth Dates
5. The Inside Folder requirements:
a. A Table of Contents listing the type of problem, the name of the group member
responsible for each page, and the page number.
b. At least three pop – up/3 – D interactive rotation – area, volume, & cross sections
c. Calculus Concepts:
i. Area – “columns & pancakes”
ii. Volume – “disk, washer, & shell” (using
x – axis, y – axis, a line other than an
axis)
iii. Arc Length
iv. Surface Area
v. 3 Cross Sectional Volumes (square or rectangle, circle or semi – circle, &
triangle)
d. Real Life data analysis for one of each group member’s section of problems.
6. The Back Cover requirements:
a. Reflection Paragraphs – typed and pasted onto the last two panels of the back of
the cover. Specific examples from each group member should be included in the
paragraphs.
i. What specific things did the group learn from the project?
ii. How is what the group learned significant?
iii. How can each group member translate what they learned to other areas?
iv. How did the group feel about the project and your team member’s specific
roles in putting the project together?
v. What did the group members like and/or dislike about the project?
7. Grading Scale:
Accuracy of Mathematics (12 problems * 4 pts)
48 pts
using Picture, Set – up, Work, & Answer format
22 pts Word Problem Sentence Structure, Birth Date Usage, & Theme Incorporation
10 pts Pop – up / 3 – D usage, “Impressive” Presentation, Creativity, & Neatness
10 pts Typed Reflection = Back Panels
10 pts Promptness (10 pts = on time or 10 pts off for each day late) Dec 10th
