Lesson Plan #27

Lab Number 3
Construction: What they wear, and who does what
Date: Monday, March 27, 2017
Supervisor: Natalie Mackie
Lead Teacher: Kelly Sheehan Lesson 5

Children’s Names and Strengths, Interests, and/or Learning/Development Needs:

1. Asher is independent and if you ask him questions, he can answer. He also does fairly
well at sharing with children. He loves cars and listening to stories. He needs to work
on counting, ABC’s, and his speech. He will be able to work on his ABC’s and counting
at the language and literacy activity, where he will be able to label the letters on the
tunnels the car goes through, and count how many tunnels there are. He will also be
able to work on his speech at this activity by talking about the car rolling through the
tunnels.
2. Dallin is very good at independent and is a good helper. He loves playing with any
sort of vehicle (cars, trucks, etc.), Legos, riding tricycles and scooters, water guns,
playing on slides, and books. He has a goal of working on letters, and numbers. He
can work on letters and counting at the language and literacy and math activities. At
the language activity, he can label the letters on all the tunnels, or the ones the car
goes through. At the math activity, he can count how many tangrams there are.
3. Della can trace letters, is outgoing, friendly, and copies shapes. She loves school, is
interested in art, performing (singing and dancing), and painting. She isn’t very
interested in fine motor activities, so her parents would like for her to work on them.
She can do this at the manipulatives activity, where she will use pincher grasps to
slide the geometric builder pieces together.
4. Erin can be independent at times, and enjoys dolls and books. She has a goal to work
on her English in preschool. She can do this at the dramatic play area as she talks
about what she is doing with the tools.
5. James is very social, likes to make people laugh and is very independent. He loves
sports, climbing, being active and animals. He needs to work on recognizing and
naming letters. He can do this at the language and literacy activity, where he will
practice labeling the letters on the tunnels.
6. Aidyn is smart and eager to question and learn about her surroundings. She loves
princesses and coloring. She has a goal of making friends, and she can do this at the
sensory table, where she can talk to her peers about the pictures in the bin and get
to know them as well.
7. Mollie can recognize most letters, enjoys reading, and can write her name. She loves
books, baby everything, as well as “girly” things. She needs to work on
communicating her wants and needs through verbal communication. She can do this
at sensory table, if she has trouble sharing space with peers, she will use her verbal
communication to let the teachers know about the situation, and inviting the other
child to join her.

Preassessment and Findings:

I asked Mollie, Aidyn and Duke if they knew what construction workers wore. Aidyn replied,
saying “yellow hats on their heads,” whole the other two did not know what they wore. I also
asked this question to McKenzie and Stephen, and Stephen also knew they wore “helmets on
their head.” With this information, it is clear that the children know that construction workers
wear hard hats, but don’t know what they’re called or why they’re worn. They also did not
know what other items workers wear to protect themselves. I then asked Aidyn and Addie if

1
they knew what construction workers did, and both knew that they build buildings, but this
was the extent of their knowledge. The children have no knowledge of the different jobs that
construction workers have, nor what else they build, besides buildings.

Ideas to be Emphasized:
1. Construction workers wear different clothes to protect themselves (such as hard hats and
boots), to hold their tools (tool belts), or to inform others that they are working.
2. Construction workers have different jobs and names for what they do, such as a
carpenter, electrician, inspector, etc.

Preschool Concepts or Skills:

1. Protection
2. Through
3. Heat/Warmth
