Context Clues are hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word.

The clue may appear within the


same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a preceding sentence. For instance, when a student is as

2. Synonym Context Clue (repeat context clue)- a word is similar in meaning to the unfamiliar word.
Example: My friend is affable or friendly and easy to approach.
3. Definition Context Clue-the unfamiliar word is defined in a dictionary form or casual form.
Example: An affable is a person who is pleasantly easy to approach and always friendly.
4. Explanation/ Restatement Context Clue-explains or restates the unfamiliar word.
Example: Because the horse was so fatigued, he collapsed before he finished.
5. Specific Example Context Clue-gives examples of the unfamiliar word.
Example: Laborers like factory workers should find dignity in their work. They are no difficult than the lawyers, the priest,
