Unit Title: Designing Homes with Math Name: Diego Reyes

Content Area: Geometry Grade Level: 9th and 10th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Common Core Standards

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.3
Apply geometric methods to solve design problems (e.g., designing an object or structure to satisfy physical constraints or minimize cost;
working with typographic grid systems based on ratios).*
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.2
Apply concepts of density based on area and volume in modeling situations (e.g., persons per square mile, BTUs per cubic foot).*
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.1
Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).*
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GMD.A.1
Give an informal argument for the formulas for the circumference of a circle, area of a circle, volume of a cylinder, pyramid, and cone. Use
dissection arguments, Cavalieri's principle, and informal limit arguments.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GMD.A.3
Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems.*
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GMD.B.4
Identify the shapes of two-dimensional cross-sections of three-dimensional objects, and identify three-dimensional objects generated by
rotations of two-dimensional objects.

Geometric Measurement and Dimension

+ Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems.
+ Visualize relationships between two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects.

Modeling with Geometry

+ Apply geometric concepts in modeling situations
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Essential Questions.
+ Why do we use Mathematical Modeling to build and design houses?
+ Why do we use optimization skills and error and trial skills to build houses designed for the poor?
+ Do we as a society have a choice to help the people around us or is it an obligation?
+ Are you able to use geometric shapes to describe certain aspects of your home?

Student learning objectives.

 Students will be able to identify the applications of Geometry in constructing houses by comparing objects to similar geometric
shapes, and their properties.
 Students will be able to determine all required measurements of their miniature homes.
 Students will demonstrate an understanding of volume, perimeter, and area.
 Students will tap into their critical & creative thinking skills by designing their own personal mini homes while considering the
parameters and satisfying the given constraints. With a technology component to assist the students in constructing their floor plans.
 Students will be able to interpret 3 dimensional figures with 2 dimensional figures by viewing the cross sections of the 3D objects,
through graphic representation and graphic organizers (step by step process).
 Students will engage in effective discussions with their peers through group work by providing thoughtful comments, being effective
data collectors, and offering advice to improve their original floor plan.

Unit Summary:
This unit plan is designed for students to identify and analyze daily life objects as geometric figures. After developing this skill we will
apply it to design and construct a floor plan and model, respectively. Where the floor plan and model will come with set parameters and is
intended to house people in need. It also incorporates a soft introduction to optimization and the Pythagorean Theorem by covering some
history of Mathematics.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level: Formative: Summative:
 Questionnaire  Mix and Match Puzzle  Student Presentations
 Kahoot  Exam
 Graphic Organizer 1
 Problem Solving Digital Activity-
Volume of Cuboids
 Graphic Organizer 2
