Lesson Objectives (Big Idea):

Students will get an overview of important individuals and organizations (specifically in


the areas of science and religion) that influenced societies from 1450-1650. They will
gain background information on what these individuals or organizations did and how
this impacted people during the time period and even in our present day societies.

when investigating aspects of world history since the fifteenth century

using various tools, strategies, and approaches appropriate for historical inquiry

styles, as appropriate for the audience and purpose

individuals, ways in which ideas, values, and artistic production affected the development of

● Segway into the idea of individuals or organizations during this time period that
had influences on societies

Instruction: 45 min
Explanation of today’s class (~5 min)
● Using chromebooks, cell phones, or personal laptops, students will access the
website “Quizlet”, instruction will be student-led as they learn about various
individuals and organizations. The online tool has a list of different
people/organizations with a short 1-2 sentence explanations of their
significance. Students can choose how they learn the information: lecture style,
flashcards, or quiz game and then test their knowledge through games
(matching, typing response to definition). (~40 min)

● Teacher will circulate during this period to answer any questions, provide
clarification, help with using the website, and ensure all students are on task

Differentiation​​:
● Various options for different learning styles (lecture with audio for auditory
learners; flashcards for visual learners; quiz/matching for kinesthetic learners).
● For students who do not want to use a computer or other piece of technology,
a printed version of the list and flashcards will be made available
● Students who finish early can move on to the games that test your knowledge
and/or the start on the next activity

Activity: 25 min
● Students will choose 1 individual/organization from the list provided on
“Quizlet” and make a “mini-biography” in the format of their choice (jot notes,
drawing, essay)
● Students can do research online to get more information on the individual
● Should include 5Ws who, what, when, where, and why

Assessment type​: Assessment of Learning- students will hand in the


“mini-biography” at the end of class. The teacher will read over the responses and
assign a level of understanding based on professional judgement.
Differentiation​​: Students have the option of presenting the “mini-biography” in any
format they choose.

Closing: 3 min
● Students will turn to the person next to them and share their “mini-biography” in
1 minute or less to each other
