Aim: To observe the typical alcohol reactions of ethanol.

Materials:
Test tube Beaker Stirring rod
Potassium Dichromate Ethanol Sodium bicarbonate
Potassium Manganate Ethanoic Acid Measuring Cylinder
Tripod stand Teat Pipette

1. Add 2cm3 of
Potassium
Dichromate to
1cm3 of ethanol
in a test tube.
Then add 2cm3
of dilute H2SO4
to the test tube.
Place test tube in
a warm water
bath and allow
the reaction to
occur for 10
minutes.
2. Repeat
procedure 1
using Potassium
Manganate

3. Add 2cm3 of
Ethanol and
1cm3 of Glacial
Ethanoic acid to
a test tube. Then
add 3 drops of
concentrated
Sulphuric Acid
to the test tube
carefully then
gently warm for
a few minutes in
a water bath.
Pour the product
carefully into a
beaker
containing
sodium
carbonate
solution and not
the smell.
4. Add 1 cm3 of
ethanol to
concentrated
Sulphuric Acid
and bubble the
gas evolved into
an acidified
solution of
potassium
manganate.
