Lesson Title/Focus: Measurement: How Long is a Foot?

Learning Targets: Compare measurements using different unit lengths.

Success Criteria:
● Measure accurately with no gaps or overlaps
● Label the unit I use to measure
● Record to the nearest unit length “about how many”
● Explain reasons for different measurements of the same object

Assessment Strategies:
An assessment will be given at the end of the lesson in order to monitor students
knowledge. Teacher will also monitor the room in order to see how students are measuring their
materials and making note of things that might need to be retaught before moving on to the next
lesson.

Student Voice:
Students will be given many opportunities to share their thoughts and ideas. They will
also have the chance to look back over the target and success criteria and discuss how well they
think they are doing through self assessment.

Instructional Strategies:
Teacher will model accurate and inaccurate measuring in front of the class. Students will
be able to see the correct way to measure and will have the opportunity to discuss why the
incorrect was in incorrect. After modeling, I will allow students to explore by measuring
materials and recording data in their math notebooks. At the end of the explore part of the lesson,
students will come to the meeting area. During this time, we will look at the data recorded as a
whole class and share our observations aloud using the sentence frame “I notice…”. I will end
the lesson with a deeper thinking question that students will have until the next day to think
about.

Grouping of Students:
There is no grouping of students for this lesson. Work is done independently however
they can ask other students from their table groups if they are stuck.

Learning Experiences:
In the previous lesson, students had the opportunity to measure the same materials using
small and large paper clips. They recorded the information on the same chart that we used for
this lesson.

Instructional Materials:
● Assessment 2-A
● Bag of materials to measure
● Centimeter Cubes
● Poster paper
● Sticky Notes
● Measurement Chart
