LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9

Section and Time: Date:

Learning Level 9
Competency Explain how the structure of the carbon atom affects the type of bonds it
forms; S9MT-IIg-17 Quarter 2

Learning Week 7
Objectives Knowledge: Identify the common organic compounds No.
Skills: Give examples of common organic compounds and their uses
Day 1-2
Attitudes: Recognize the uses of common organic compounds

Topic Common Organic compounds and Their Uses Duration: 120

mins (two
meetings)
Resources Needed LM, TG, materials needed for activity 1(refer to LM. p 131)

PROCEDURE:
Element of
Suggested Activities
the Plan
Awareness In previous module you have learned how elements make chemical bond by transferring and
sharing of electrons from their outer shells to attain stability. This is also the process by
which every carbon compound or organic compound is formed.
Before anything else, please answer the pre-assessment prepared for you.
1. Answer the Pre-assessment (LM.p. 128-130)
2. Read and comprehend every question before you choose the answer.
3. Answer the test accurately and honestly.
Activity 1. Show pictures of the following products: gasoline, isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, LPG,
acetone, and acetic acid (vinegar). These products are all composed of organic compounds.
2. Brainstorming Activity:
Have the students brainstorm about the uses of the compounds listed in table (LM. P. 132).
Have them write their answers in Manila Paper or in a PowerPoint presentation and let them
present their outputs in front of the class
3. After their presentations, show the class other examples of organic compounds and
facilitate discussion. Have them define the organic compound.
Analysis 1. What do you think are the characteristics of the materials which give their uses?
2. Why do you think these kinds of organic compounds are very important?
3. What is organic compound?
Abstraction Compounds Uses Compounds Uses
Gasoline fuel for vehicles ethanol disinfectant; and
used as main
ingredient in liquors
Kerosene fuel for lamps and acetone used to remove nail
portable cooking stove polish
LPG fuel for gas stove and acetic acid used as component
cars of vinegar(4% by
volume)
can be used to treat
fungal infection

2. These common organic compounds are very important because they have many uses at
home and in the industry.
3. Organic compounds are group of carbon-containing compounds. Organic compounds
contain carbon and hydrogen; other organic compounds are combined with other elements
namely oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulphur and halogens.
