Lecture: Writing Thesis Proposals

Thesis Statement – sentence that summarizes your argument that you plan for your topic.

There should be at least one general objective followed by three specific objective.

MAKE A CLAIM – Thesis adds new knowledge and different approach to any particular field. Works to fill
up the gaps between existing and new knowledge. Should be written in a way that it produces powerful
claim for the readers based on evidences available.

INCORPORATE CHALLENGE AND INTER-RELATIONSHIP – your statement should have a relation with the
evidences you are offering.

OUTLINE THE DIRECTION OF YOUR PAPER – you should develop a way that reflects the essence of your
projects for the readers. However, you should not make your readers anticipate more than you are
ready to present in your concluding document.

RESEARCH AIM AND OBJECTIVES DETERMINE THE SCOPE, DEPTH AND THE VOERALL DIRECTION OF THE
RESEARCH.

Add an AIM (e.g. developing native cogs through cognitive development)

TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR RESEARCH PROPOSAL

- Know yourself
- Know the program from which you seek support
- Read the program announcement
- Formulate an appropriate research objectives
- Develop a viable research plan
- State your research objectives in your proposal
- Do not use develop
- Frame your project around the work of others
- Grammar and spelling count
- Format is important
- Know the review process of panels

Significance of the Study

- Discusses the reason in conducting the research


- If you have few beneficiaries you can just write it in one or two paragraph (why is it important to
conduct the study and all the beneficiaries and how they can benefit from the study)
- But if you have many beneficiaries write the following:
o 1st paragraph (why is it important to conduct this study)
o 2nd paragraph – main beneficiary (organization)
o 3rd paragraph – second beneficiary
o 4th paragraph – importance to the proponents/researchers
o 5th paragraph – importance to the future researchers.
- Significance of the study is an important section of a thesis or dissertation.
o The rationale, timeliness and relevance of the study.
o Possible solutions to existing problems or improvement to unsatisfactory conditions.
o The beneficiaries, and how they are going to be benefited.
o Possible contributions to the fund of knowledge.
o Possible implications.

Project Scope, Limitations, and Delimitations

- Area of the project


- What caters and who caters who
- For planning and design of architectural drawings and specifications with provision of general
structural electrical mechanical drawings.(included in limitations)
- Delimitations – what will be done will only be limited in the catchment area.
