& Target List
Build
Relationships

Stay organized, Track progress

10
Step 1: Fine tune your focus

• Industry
• Function
• Location
• Other (culture, size, social
impact, etc.)

What is Your Anchor?

Step 2: Create target list + identify contacts

• Who has recruited at Kellogg in the past?

Historical/ Track Record

• Where have former Kellogg students interned?

• Who has hired MBA candidates at other schools?
• Who is currently hiring? Set up Job Alerts!
– Kellogg Job Board

– Activities, topics, products, etc.
Step 3: Outreach

1) Spread the Word- Email friends and family

2) Reach Out to Company Contacts
– Who you are
– Why you are writing to them
– What you are hoping to learn/what your
objective is
– Call to action – make it easy for them to reply

14
Step 4: Informational Interviews
Questions to ask:
• Their background
PREPARE: • Company/Industry info
• Career paths
Pitch, Positioning • Pain points
• Firm structure

Insightful questions • Compensation
• Basic; Answers on website
• Negative questions
GOAL: Build rapport and professional relationship

15
Send a Thank You

“…thank you notes to me [are] just a basic courtesy and

indicator of interest in the company. So it’s a little off
putting when you spend 30 minutes hearing why the
candidate wants to work at my company and then
don’t get any follow up afterwards.”
-Kellogg Alum

• Note or email
• Include: “I hope you don’t mind if I follow up with you. (Be specific)
• Go back and thank the person who connected you

16
Step 5: Follow Up… GROW the Relationship

Always be asking
yourself, ‘is there
any way I can help
the people I’m
talking to?’
-Kellogg Alum
