CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
Just 30 years ago, hunting was a way of life across the U.S. with more than 17 million adult
hunters. The baby boomers, like generations before them, gained an appreciation for wildlife
conservation and learned useful outdoor skills from their parents and grandparents. Today, hunt-

ing remains an important way for people to connect with family, friends, and the outdoors as
well as experience delicious, locally sourced protein. However, conservation leaders have grown
increasingly concerned about declines in hunting participation nationally. In Florida, thanks to
forward thinking by the state’s hunting community, hunter numbers have increased slightly in
Major changes
Major regulation and rule changes for this season are listed below. There
are many other changes not listed here. Hunters are responsible for learning
requirements and regulations pertaining to the types of hunting they pursue.
• Dove hunting dates have been shifted later to coincide with cooler weather, and
first-phase shooting hours now start a half-hour before sunrise.
• Pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) air guns firing single bullets or bolts/arrows are
now allowed on private lands to take deer (minimum .30-cal.) during general gun
seasons and turkey (minimum .20-cal.) during fall and spring turkey seasons.
On WMAs, PCP air guns firing single bullets or bolts/arrows are allowed to take
deer (minimum .30-cal.) and turkeys (minimum .20-cal.) where they are legal
game during general gun seasons, and those firing only bolts/arrows are allowed
during spring turkey seasons. Air guns are not legal during archery, crossbow
and muzzleloading gun seasons on private and public (WMAs) lands.
• Three new public hunting areas have been established: 8,096-acre Plank Road
WMA in Leon and Jefferson counties managed by the Florida Forest Service;
1,873-acre Kissimmee Chain of Lakes Rolling Meadows Unit in Polk County
This guide is also
managed by the South Florida Water Management District; and 1,460-acre available online at
Everglades Headwaters Hatchineha Unit also in Polk County owned by the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service. See public hunting areas section on pages 30–37 for
hunting opportunities on these areas.
