Conclusion
The results showed that for the chosen intersection that lies in the West Bromwich town,
overall collisions almost remained same from year 2012 to 2015. However, it increased
suddenly in year 2016 by approximately 18 percent, signifying the presence of some issue
compromising the intersection safety. The results also showed that there is a 67% decrease
in the serious collisions since year 2012. Most of the collisions occurred due to merging,
diverging and weaving manoeuvres. Total Collision Rate for 5 years period (2012 to 2016)
was found as 1.08 Collisions per million vehicle kilometres out of which fatal collision rate
is just 0.02 collisions per million vehicle kilometres.

The collision data was further analysed by plotting all collisions on a single map using
ArcGIS, and it revealed that there are no blackspots within the case study intersection. The
analysis of collision data showed that the contribution of geometric characteristics to
collisions in descending order is:

 diverging, weaving and merging conflicts

 traffic signage and pavement markings
 over-speeding
 sight distances

The specific instances of collision reveal that insufficient lengths of merging and diverging
lanes, lesser entry angle to roundabout, absence of traffic calming devices, large radius of
roundabout, improper speed management, insufficient lengths of accelerating lanes, poor
location of parking space, vehicle’s blind spots, insufficient length between consecutive
traffic signals, absence of pedestrian / pedal cyclist crossing, absence of dedicated lanes for
cyclists, absence of yield traffic signs, and skidding tendency of the vehicles at the approach
to roundabout were some of the reasons leading to collision of traffic.

1.1. Recommendations
Based on the results and the analysis carried out, the following appropriate measures should be
taken.

 Proper accelerating and decelerating lanes be provided.

1
 Speed limits should be reduced at approaches to the roundabout and reduced speeds
be ensured through the use of traffic calming devices.
 Priority signage such as yield signage should be installed on all the approaches.
 Skid resistance of the approaches should be improved so as to avoid skidding of vehicles
during wet conditions.
 Entry angles to the roundabouts should be made within 20 to 60° so as to give a clear
line of sight to the vehicles approaching roundabouts and avoid conflicts.
 The large radius of the roundabout leads to high speeds, so speed breaker should be
constructed, giving priority to Birmingham Road traffic.
 Pedestrian / cyclist crossings should be introduced at the intersection.
 A dedicated cyclist lane should be introduced for ensuring safety of cyclists.
 The parking should be relocated, and proper signage and traffic calming devices be
introduced to assist the traffic leaving the parking.

1.2. Way forward

It is suggested that the improvements recommended vide this dissertation be implemented.
Once implemented, the intersection should be monitored closely and the collision data of
roundabout should be collected regularly so as to observe the outcomes of the implemented
improvements. If geometric problems still persist, appropriate recommendations should be
made in the light of new observations.
