Water Channel Monitoring System Using GSM

Abstract:
Community-based early warning systems (CBEWS) is a “people-centered”
system and empowers individuals and communities threatened by hazards to act on sufficient
time and in an appropriate manner to reduce the possibility of personal injury, loss of life,
damage to property, environment and loss of livelihood. These things lead to the development of
the device necessary for the protection of the community against flood hazards as it allows
people to get prepared with sufficient time. An alarm system was developed to monitor the water
level on Water Channels that overflows during heavy rains or during Dam gates are opened. The
water sensors were submerged in a canal of water to test the functionality of the device before its
installation. Computer programs were created to enhance the monitoring of water level: the
Water Channel Monitor Software and the Water Level Monitor. when the water enters into any
channel then message is sent to the Authority using GSM . If authority people kept their phones
in silent mode then that mode is converted to general mode and starts voice alert in the phone .
Using such systems we can provide a greater alert and rescue operations using Internet Of
Things.

Objectives:
This system is designed to make alert about the water flowing details, when the dams are
opened, using this system the water authority can get the details about the flowing of water in
channel so that they can take care of overflowing water or use the water for the farming purpose.

Circuit Diagram:
Hardware Requirements:
1. MicroController
2. Water Sensor
3. Gsm
4. Power Supply

Software Requirements:
1. Arduino IDE
2. Embedded C
3. Arduino Compiler
4. Arduino Boot loader
5. Embedded Java
6. Eclipse Ide
7. Android SDK

Features:
1. It helps people to get alert immediately.
2. We will automatically convert silent profile to general profile to inform about the situation in
users smart phone through the application.
3. Starts voice announcement about the water channel Status.
4. It helps the authority to track the Water flowing channel location.
Existing System
 In Existing system the water arrival in the channel has to be monitored manually.
 Turning on the Water pump is done manually or automatic system used at starter
 Later turning on water pump is updated by GSM base motor turn on and off.
 There is no live surveillance from channel to the user in under to know what is happening
nearby water channel.
 There is no photo capturing feature from water channel to the user.
 In case of multiple water channel the user will not be able to turn on the exact water pump
for which channel the water has arrived.

Proposed system

 We propose a system called water channel monitoring system.

 We implement an water sensors for channels.
 Water sensors for water channel have unique number and are connected to the
microcontroller.
 In this proposed system any of the water channel senses the water, the sensors gets
activated and sends the signal to the microcontroller.
 The microcontroller identifies from which channel the sensor is activated and sends an
SMS to the owner/user with description of which channel has received water.
 In case if the user/owner has kept the phone in silent mode, we convert the phone into
general mode on receiving the unique sms from microcontroller and turn on the voice
announcement to activate user/owner and consider the importance of msg received.

Advantages
1. Low cost.
2. Easy to install.
3. Portable and flexible.
4. Fully automated system.
5. Easy to operate.
Disadvantages
1. Initial setup cost of this system is high.
2. Sensors should be installed properly for accurate results.

Applications
1. Can be used for monitoring the water in the agriculture land.
2. For monitoring the different canal water supply.
3. Water leakage around pipeline
4. Oil leakage detection in machines

About Embedded
An embedded system is a special-purpose computer system designed to perform a
dedicated function. Since the system is dedicated to specific tasks, design engineers can optimize
it, reducing the size and cost of the product. Embedded system comprises of both hardware and
software. Embedded system is fast growing technology in various fields like industrial
automation, home appliances, automobiles, aeronautics etc. Embedded technology uses PC or a
controller to do the specified task and the programming is done using assembly language
programming or embedded C.

About Domain
Automation plays an increasingly important role in the global economy and in daily
experience. Engineers strive to combine automated devices with mathematical and
organizational tools to create complex systems for a rapidly expanding range of applications and
human activities. Tasks requiring subjective assessment or synthesis of complex sensory data,
such as scents and sounds, as well as high-level tasks such as strategic planning, currently
require human expertise.
The domain that we work on is in GSM. GSM is basically a communication device which has its
own commands to execute message sending, message receiving, call accepting, call making and
organizing contacts.
Technical specifications:
 Operating voltage of embedded circuitry is 12vdc
 Current consumption of device in active mode 200mill amp
 Operating frequency of device is 11.0592MHZ

Conclusion:
Community-based early warning systems (CBEWS) is a “people-centered” system and
empowers individuals and communities threatened by hazards to act on sufficient time and in an
appropriate manner to reduce the possibility of personal injury, loss of life, damage to property,
environment and loss of livelihood An alarm system was developed to monitor the water level on
Channel that overflows during heavy rains. The water level sensors were submerged in a canal of
water to test the functionality of the device before its installation. Using this system water
channels can be easily monitored by sitting at different places and this information can be
provided for the people who are near to that channels. Using such systems we can provide a
greater alert operations.
