Acknowledgement
Firstly, I would like to thank Ms. Tay, our lecturer for this module for guiding us in
making this project successful. She had provided us great help and patiently assisted us when
we were in doubt, thus advising us. Other than that, I am also very grateful to have great team
members. All of them were very helpful and the great teamwork projected by us had brought
the success of this event. Moreover, I would like to thank the welfare home for accommodating
us and providing us an opportunity to engage in such community service. Finally, I would like
to express my gratitude towards my loving family who had fully supported me in organising
this event.

Introduction
Community service is defined as voluntary work intended to help people in a particular
area. This module aims to develop a community of tertiary students to be more responsible,
sensitive and knowledgeable about the community and their needs. For this assignment, we
were required to choose to volunteer in an orphanage or street feeding.

Our group consist of 20 people. At first, our group wanted to go for street feeding.
However, after getting in touch with a few organisers, we found that we did not have enough
fund and we were not allowed to film there. Therefore, our group had decided to volunteer in
an orphanage which is Rumah Kebajikan Karunai Illam. The orphanage is formed in 2011 by
Persatuan Salva Siddhanta and is a home for underprivileged children registered with the
Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat. The welfare home is presently located at Kepong and the
building was donated by late Miss Manomoney. The home currently consist of 23 children and
7 caretakers.

Introduction

The food and beverage team consist of Loh Mun Tong and I. Both of us are responsible to
prepare lunch and beverages for the children, their caretakers and our fellow groupmates. As
the people in the home are all vegetarians, we had contacted several restaurants nearby the
home to procure for vegetarian cuisine.

Pre-event
.
Our group holds our meetings after class to
discuss on the details of the event. Everyone
had actively participated in the discussion
thus giving our opinions and ideas. During
the meeting, we would discuss the jobs to
be done and dividing it to everyone. Other
than that, we would update each division’s
progress in the meeting to check and see if
anyone requires extra help.

On 4th October, I had joined the gift team to

purchase goodies for the children. We
bought water bottles for every child and
also prices to be won by them from the
games we arranged.

On 16th October, I had went to Aeon supermarket in Sunway pyramid with Loh Mun Tong,
my fellow teammate, to purchase beverages for the children as the food vendor is not
providing any drinks.

7
On the week of visit, we had a master briefing.
During the master briefing, we had a dry run for
all the games that we prepared to find out
whether the games are suitable. Other than that,
we also wrapped the presents for the children.
We ensured that the gifts are sufficient for all of
them.

On the event day, we had a final briefing in Taylor’s University before departing to the
orphanage. We ran through the itinerary for the day and the responsibility of each
department.

9
When we arrived at the home, we had an ice breaking session where we introduce ourselves
and get to know the children more. We separated the children into several groups and
created group logos with them. After that, each group is required to introduce their group
logo and talk more about themselves such as their ambitions. It was a fun session where we
get to interact and learn about each other.

When the others started with the games, we, the food and beverage team had set up and
arranged the beverages we brought along for the kids. We were notified that there is another
party providing food for the children today. Therefore, we had a small discussion to
accommodate the food we had arranged with the other party. We came to a conclusion that
we will provide everything for the children to choose freely.

10
At around 11:00am, Yon Li from the transport team had sent us to pick up lunch from the
food vendor, Sim Cai Ting, located nearby the orphanage. The workers there helped us to
load the food on car.

All of us had lunch together at 12:30pm. As the food and beverage team, I distributed out
the food and beverages to everyone during lunch time. I ensured that all the children had
receive food and beverages provided by us and then joined them to have lunch. We sat
together with the children and joined them for prayer before having our lunch.

11
After lunch, few of worked together to construct the shelf we bought for the caretaker of
the orphanage. This is our token of appreciation for her for giving us this great
opportunity to visit the home and spend our day there.

12
Around 3:00pm, we wrapped up the session and distributed the gifts that we had prepared
to the children. We also gave the caretaker the book shelves that we built and expressed
our gratitude towards her before leaving.

Post-Event

Few days after the event, we were required to shoot a reflection video to speak our
thought on the visit that we had. Mun Tong and I discuss what we wanted to express in
the reflection video and shot it together. We both expressed our opinions regarding this
event personally and also as a member of the food and beverage team.

Reflection
When I was young, I remembered following my parents to an orphanage to donate
items to those in need every Chinese New Year. However, I never had a chance to interact
with them moreover get to know them personally. This activity is definitely a first-time
experience for me.

I find it very meaningful to be given the chance to visit the orphanage thus interact
with all of them. I had come to realised how fortunate I am to possess what I have. Never in
my dreams that the ordinary life I have is something that someone else would dread of. I am
more than grateful to be bless with a loving family and a chance to receive good education.

When we got in contact with the food vendor, we were told that the owner of the
restaurant did provide the orphanage food often. Other than that, she was very generous to us
and gave us discount for the food that we purchased for the children. I was very touched to
see that the community has a heart for all these children.

Lastly, I was very happy to see all the children enjoyed everything we did for them.
Even though it was only a short period of time spent with them, I believe that this will be a
precious memory for all of us to treasure. I strongly believe that this module is a great
initiative for all of us to gain exposure thus providing help to those in need. I would definitely
be more than willing to participate in this kind of activity again if given the chance again in
future.
